    Matti,

Buck and Andy are correct. Don't be discouraged with the "few" responses.

There certainly is a lot of interest with your build. If you want to play a numbers game, there are some people on this forum who have over 10,000 views and only a 5%+response return. You are right in-line with most others.

I also assume that you also visit other builds, as I do, but do not necessarily post remaks with every view. Many certainly visit silently. Your build is very interesting, especially given that it is the Billings kit. I think that all other Wasas are currently Corels. Your build is excellent, a pleasure to look in as you update your progress.

I'm speaking as a newbie as well, but I already have very good feelings about some of the very creative and artistic people who have responded to my build, as you have...It's a very nice back-and-forth kind of thing. It takes a while, don't get discouraged, what Buck and Andy said is certainly true. Please keep us up-to-date on your progress. But, I get it artists are sensitive (:-)

    Matti,

For your bow detail, try this. I cut some small pieces, glued them at an angle, and then drilled very small holes to have the appearance of nails. Close up in this pic it looks "weak" but just looking at it through normal vision the poor quality effort sort of goes away.

PS: I almost totally missed this small detail on the ship. After looking at so many photos I realized that the Vasa had these planks to allow the water sto slip under the bow. Your photo is spectacular the best I have seen. Please post more pics of your visit, I'm sure that they would be great to see.

Again !! love the look of your build. Such nice work--congrats.

PS: I'm working on fixing my weather deck gratings, took hints from yours (:-) Copying is the best form of flattery.

    Hi everyone,

A very minor update. I'm working again so have less time with the boat. But I'm enjoying my part-time return to my first love (aviation).

I tried my hand at sculpturing, No let me rephrase; I tried my hand at shaping two pieces of wood to represent the cathead braces. Not "winners" but painted, they sort of disappear visually. The 1:1 braces are so beautiful, way beyond my capacity as a wood shaper (:-) These will have to do.

You will note that the gratings have been removed, working on completely re-installing those, as they should have been. Mine were such a disappointment.

There is also a pic of the completed ladders. Thanks for looking in, much appreciated.

Here are a few updated pics. The stern is coming along. As I've mentioned before, I regret not painting the red portions of the hull +. But as we a all know looking in retrospect all is very clear. The brown wood was my compromise.Mmmm lots of work here. The Vasa must have been a beautiful site, for an hour or so
Having all of these museum sources makes it much easier to assist in the colors
It's hard to tell here, but I actually added a flat clear to the lions. The pics don't really show that too well
I added a small strip of wood to the gallery edges. The same will be added to the upper ones

    Dennis,

    Thanks for your comments, very nice of you. You can buy all of these nails here;

    http://www.micromark.com/small-spikes-pkg-of-1000,8607.html

One note- they are right angled, as they are intended as railroad tie cleats. In that regard make sure that you line-up the angles all along your hull. I have also noted that occasionally they will slip downwards. I decided to sort-of push them into the wood a bit to limit the slipping. Glue, of course would preclude that. However the micro ones are sooo small, that it is very hard to not have the glue be invisible.

Also I recommend that you pre-drill all holes and then slip/push them in. One "sideways" entry (without the pre-drilled hole) and oops a scar is left in the wood Mmmm...

I purchased all the medium and micro sizes. and sorta mixed them up. Good luck (:-)

    Matti,

I had two sets of spares due to a nasty accident while building the first one.  My lady pushed me to get a second one and "do better".... I did.  That plastic is bit strange.  Heating it and it doesn't give, a bit more and it bends and just a hair past that temperature, it turns into liquid.  Go slow and take your time.  You'll do fine.

On the topic of Fred, the Musuem, and BB... as I understood it, the BB kit is only one the Wasa Museum sells.  Seems BB is only company that updates their kit as new things are found through the research.  If you have questions, do email the museum staff.  You'll get an answer and it will be the right answer.

Heres a link to the instructions:

The instructions are quite unstructured, but so far everything is there, but you have to jump around between the different parts of the instructions, and the big plan is often helpful. Just think the steps through and youll be fine.

A point of curiosity about the grating, was it a 'fixed' feature on Vasa, it doesn't look like it could be taken up?

After you posed the question it then glared at me how incorrect it all was. I sincerely appreciate your input. As you will note below, dry-dock will last a bit longer as needed alterations, have begun.

I looked at Matti's and at JanV's they so got it right. OK, now armed with photos, this will be an easy, but very important visible fix. THANKS...

PS: Thanks for mentioning this before, deck cannons, masts and standing rigging were in place (:-)

You probably already know about this book, as it is published in Sweden. I just received it after ordering it three months ago. It is a great read, as well as an excellent reference. Here are some pics in case you did not know of it.

PS: I do also have the first book from the Vasa Museum (Vasa 1) excellent as well.

    Hello,

Here is another "retro-update". I decided to remove the original, kit included, stairs so that I could replicate more closely what has been installed on the 1:1 in Stockholm.

The pics are self-explanatory (the first pic was my original installation). I purchased two sets of stairs and glued the step's vertical timbers together so that I could then reshape them with the curves.

The Stockholm Vasa ladders are, I think, new so I assume (that word again) that the museum historians copied ladders that were in use at the time that included those curves. I also noticed that some of the 1:1 photos have a curved deck cutout at the top of the stairs, so I did some cutting and fixing as well.

My center area between the two ladders is incorrect, but too late to deal with that. I may add some kind of figurine details on that center wall. Hmmmm

Moving on I will now start on the bow figures. They will be painted similarly to my stern figures. With these figures I will attempt to add some sort of slim framing that I see on the 1:1 photos. I have to think about how to do this.

Again, I so appreciate, and I am certainly motivated with your kind posts as well as those of you whom are kind enough to just visit this build in progress. Thanks everyone.

    Regards,

Hey all, did all the towers. Also painted them. Because of the different materials I had to put on a thicker basecoat of red on them to get them looking uniform. To give them scale and make the surface more vibrant I used black washes and then light drybrushing.

Now I can start with the details and sculptures for them.
