I finished the main deck planking and applied one coat of a clear satin finish. I also simulated the trenails at all of the joints, but you can't see it in the photos. I need a really good camera with a closeup wide angle lens.
Next up is to prepare and add the frames around the square openings and place the main deck staircase.

Working on planking the main deck. I am really pleased with the color of the bleached walnut wood. Using Peter's research, it appears that at this scale, the length of a real ship's deck planks should be no more than 102mm. The kit calls for 180mm. I chose to go with 100mm. Rather than plank with one continuous strip and simulate joints with a marker, I chose to do it the actual way with the 3 plank shift. The first line at the center was done with all 100mm strips and the next started with a 75mm strip, the next with 50mm and the next with 25mm, then back to a 100mm and so on. One long edge and both ends of each strip were  darkened with a black marking pen to simulate the black caulking that was used in between planks to seal the deck. I also tried to mix up the grains of the planks to give it more a realistic look since real decks were planked with lumber that did not match the flow of the grain.
All this may seem to the extreme, but I said I would try to take this build to a more extreme level of reality than my last.

The main deck staircase and banisters are completed. Everything was constructed from scrap lumber since they are not included in the kit.

    Next up: The ship's stove.

I know just how you feel, there are times I wish I could start all over again so I can execute each stage property having learnt from all my mistakes. I don't think I could persuade the boss to let me spend another £700 just yet.

    good evening everyone

some of you might have realised i have been doing some posting again within MSW, as i bring myself back into the fold after a period away, i never got bored with the Victory, just annoyed that my standard of craftsmanship is below par, as found my self constantly pulling it apart to try and do better, take the gunport lanyards, i dont know how many times i have attempted them but only now are they getting to the standard to which i like them  anyway she is re -homed now as i improved my workshop to allow work to continue on her later this year.

Hello All Thought I would sit down tonight and post and update from the No 10 Ship yard,

Thank you all for comments and likes, very appreciated.

I have installed the rework of the inner gun port (one side, atm) and lined the gun ports and slowly working my way up with the 2nd layer of planking,

I have decided to line the rest of the gun ports just to break up the build for now. I also have noticed that i need to cut out 2 gun ports on the bow

Gun ports are are 2x per night

    Cheers

The second planking is done.........under the lower wale

I'm using push pins to hold the planks in the way.
I have make first the second planking and then right away I place the lower wale.
Now I can push the pins into the second planking and I don't have to use filler because the holes are covered.
And to now for sure where the wales are I paint them the first time with a primer.
I can now go further with the planky the plank and don't have to worry if I damaged the wale and paint it again and again.

The main wale and upper wale at the port side are on.
I have planked to the top.
When I was finished with that I wanted to see how it looks when there was paint on it.
But is is not funny when you are seeing it alone so I post a few pictures....
Beware....this is only the primer, not the real paint !!!!!!!
I know there is a lot of touch up but that's for when all of it is gonna get's the real paint.
Now I can go to the starboard side and do the same thing.......
But I know for now that it is a lot of planking !!!!!
And I have to go down to the keel also.
    That takes a few months.....
It's for me a riddle how Mobbsie can do that so quick !!!!!!
I know....I have to go for work......

Here's what we're aiming for. The Granado plans from the national maritime museum at Greenwich. This is low-res off the website as I don't like taking my copy out of the tube much until I can afford to get it framed as a new crease appears each time. Note the detail with the hair bracket etc. quite a bit there that's not in the kit.

At last the finished rails with centre section added. The fit on some of the rail sections isn't that tight but it's mainly on the inside which should be hidden by gammoning and the bowsprit. It will be harder to do the gammoning now but shouldn't be impossible.
Our friend Hermes isn't fixed yet and won't be until the bowsprit is on. He's already had his caduceus (twirly stick) broken, which will be fixed later.

The vertical timbers of the head rails were made up from some curved pieces of ply from the kit that were unused from the hair brackets. In a technique copied from Mitsuaki Kubota's fine Bellerophon build they were painted blue and some half mm walnut were laminated to the sides. This was sanded back to give a nice edge.

Careful shaping ensured a close fit.

The centre hair brackets running horizontally between the upper cheek and upper rail have been made up and painted and await cutting and fitting to slot between the verticals.
I'll be glad when this lot is finished.

With all the changes to the head rails the bowsprit was temporarily fitted and gammoning applied to make sure there was nothing that would be in the way later.

A small but nerve wracking addition was the hawse holes.
I added a reinforcing plank between the cheeks as per AOTS and as a result thinned down the bolster a bit and rounded the top and semi circle edges.
The bolster was held in place while holes were marked with the flat end of the 3.5mm drill bit dipped in paint. A smaller pilot hole was drilled first before the larger one. This was done with a Dremel. The bit was too long and had a little bit of wobble making the hole slightly bigger than I would have liked but nothing major. Tape on both faces prevented splintering which was my big fear. Not a lot of second chances with this area.

Now the final centre head rail can be knocked up.

A mass blackening of some upcoming hull ironwork was carried out. I've given up on the dodgy microwaving of solution for heat and use a bowl full of hot water to sit the container of solution in to keep it nice and hot to speed the blackening process.
Included in this lot are swivel guns and brackets, sweep port hinges, spanshackles, chainplates and chase port door hinges.

Swivel guns attached. The blob at the end of the training handle is painted pva glue. Only one installed for a look. They'll be the last thing put on.

A view of the rest of the swivel gun pedestals and sweep port hinges attached.

The fore-most sweep ports will be left open. A ring bolt was added to the inside. This wasn't done on the closed ports as it simply can't be seen. This looks delicate and primed for destruction as the build continues but they are surprisingly strong as the hinges are glued a few mm into the hull and edge of the port also provides stability.
I'll be prepared for 'I told you so' if I do lose them.

Minor progress with the chain plates pinned in place. A mast was put in place and some rigging line tied off to give the run of the chainplates.
I pulled my old Sherbourne out recently to contribute to a display of my dad's woodwork and boats and noticed I must have fixed the chainplates as per the plans rather than following the rigging line. It's only noticeable on the Sherbourne now I know what to look for but I'm keen to avoid that mistake with Granado.

The fleet takes in the last of the autumn sunshine together.

June 17th 1940 sinking of HMT Lancastria - St Nazaire.

The largest ever loss of life on a single British ship sinking.
Jammed with people / soldiers escaping Europe two weeks after Dunkirk.
Estimates between 4,000 on 9,000 people on board, just 2,477 survivors, one of which was my Grandad.
    Official capacity 2,200
Hit by three bombs as it tried to clear the coast, sunk in twenty minutes.
A horrible story if you read it in detail.
