Have there been changes to Model Expo Support?
BareHook replied to rtropp's topic in Wood ship model kits
No worries! you guys are the "Gold Standard" for customer service IMHO. Ken -
I ended up blackening the hoops on my AVS being cast metal, but I believe hoops were made of wood and possibly served (wrapped) with a small diameter natural color line. Ken

Well, I've completed the cannon rigging and working on getting all the spars fabricated. I now need to get the sailmaker (wife) involved, as I plan to include sails and hope to be able to lash the mainsail to the hoops before they are installed over the mast. For the Bowsprit, Jibboom, and Mainmast I used the "drill spin and sand" method. I tried making a bowsprit with a trimming plane, but only managed to create scrap, so for now I havent had much luck with the planer. I'm not quite sure how I'll taper both ends of the spreader and topsail yards, maybe just by hand (planers bad news for me right now ) any suggestions? Probably just by hand. Ken

Here is my first fully rigged cannon. Sorry about the fuzzy pics, I'll start using a regular camera or better phone camera. The crew says the Captain is a real pain in the a**, he likes the lines coiled down neat as if for an Admirals inspection...ARR! I replaced the 5/32 blocks with smaller 1/8 blocks based upon previous logs info and feedback. Ken

Brass Pedestals Installation
BareHook replied to BareHook's topic in Metal Work, Soldering and Metal Fittings
Mine worked out fine for my AVS, as seen in my log. You have to be carefull in creating the countersinks for the screwheads on the bottom of the baseboards as this controls how deep the screw will be tapping into the keel. Ken -
Is it just me? or do those masts seem a little short?

Your moving fast, your hull is going to be complete before I even get my lumber ordered. I'm undecided whether to use PVA or CA on the planking. I won't be able to easily clean-up excess PVA on the interior, but CA doesn't allow for minor adjustments when bonding the plank in place. I'm also confused by the tapering of the planks at one end only? Shouldn't they be full width in the center and tapered at the bow and stern to req'd widths for number of strakes? I was planning on full width sheer planks and garboard tapered to fit without bow/stern rise and then developing a plank tapering for the remaining 10 planks to fit in the space evenly. Sorry for so many questions, but I have limited experience and have only planked one hull "the AVS" in the past. Ken

I've finished rigging the anchors, I went with having them lashed since I'm planning on having her under sail. I was ready to pull my hair out rigging the bouys... that was a very fiddly task, and causes me to worry somewhat about the rigging process. The cannons are loosly placed, next is to rig the tackle and bond them in place. I need to build my block tumbler to help out with all the cannon tackle blocks, I purchased a set of 1/8" blocks to use instead of the 5/32" ones. I want to finish the bowsprit, I've been looking for a pine stain that is waterbase, and may try a couple different paints that are close in color.

The main reason for me was that I wanted to have a natural wood finish on the hull with the planking showing. If I were painting or coppering the hull it would be a different story. Also, for me each ship is a learning experience and POB is an excellent first step towards POF or scratch building. Ken

I'm currently rigging the cannons on my AVS. Am I correct that in order to have formed coils: Create the coils with extra strait length for rigging Backthread through the blocks Adjust to length for the hooks to hang on the rings? Terminated to the strope of the single block that will be on the carriage One set left-hand block routing, one set right-hand block routing Or just manually form the coils on the deck after being installed? What are some other methods that have or can be used? Thanks Ken

I'm getting ready to install the pedestals and baseboard. Do I need to shorten the pedestal slots and add chamfers on the inside to align to the hull contour? Or are they just installed "as-is" with the keel not all the way to the bottom of the slot? Thanks Ken
