    Hi Everyone,

I thought one final picture of The Sovereign of the Seas in her final display spot would be appropriate.

    Mark,
    Hello Michael
I see my kit comes with 4 small turrets & 2 large ones. The plans show the large ones placed at the front of the lower gallery.Wouldn`t you think they would go at the rear?

    /Mark

Noted. Yes another Corel error to add to their list. I realized this as I was building the turrets. The lower galleries should have two same size large turrets. The only small ones are on the upper galleries.

I sent Corel an email requesting two large turrets. Their CS is very nice. They have sent me several parts to date. You will need, of course, to make your request “legit” I did note from where I had purchased the kit, and that they would not supply missing parts.

Be sure to add a jpg of the part(s) you need from their build sheet, along with the part, and their kit “S” number. Note the museum pic and my "fix”.

    Their email is info@corel-srl.it

Please feel free to post or PM any questions that you have as you go along (:-)

At least your Corel is in its early stages. Armed with your excellent level of knowledge about this ship your alterations will fall into place nicely. Mine was quite a way along before I learned of my many mistakes (:-) Again, I'm very happy to help

PS: I think that I also asked for a few extra large size decorative figures.

    Cheers,

    Michael

I seem to have a motivational problem when it comes to measuring/cutting frames.  So, I spent some time today working on making rope. I did some experimentation with this a while ago, but this is the first usable piece of rope I've turned out.

I used quilting thread, which is quite a bit thicker than regular sewing thread, so my three-strand rope has a diameter of about 0.8mm. It's not completely perfect, but then again my ropewalk is made of scrap wood and paper clips.

I plan on using three ropes like this one to make the hypozomata, the highly tensioned cable that runs through the ship near the keel. The hypozomata prevented the ship from flexing during rough seas or ramming, and was essential in maintaining the structural integrity of Greek and Roman warships.

In a trireme, the hypozomata is written to have been about 47mm in diameter, and tensioned to 13.5 tones of force. Presumably the hypozomata in a quadrireme would have to have been slightly larger, so it looks like my rope diameter is ideal for this.

Unfortunately, there is no recording of how the hypozomata was tensioned, so when I come to that point in the construction, I shall merely attempt to contrive some sort of windlass-ish thing that looks likely.

OK, so I made a crude mock-up of the prow using the mirrored profiles in my previous post, set at the proper height as determined by measuring the plans...

…and I think my initial assumption was correct. With the profiles in place relative to each other, the proportions look much better.

Note that the deck height shown here is the deck height on the plan, which is actually for a quinquereme. The deck height of the model will be considerably lower. I think I failed to mention earlier that I'm actually not strictly following the plan-- the model's hull is slightly narrower than the drawing's, since it would only have to accommodate four rowers in two banks, rather than five rowers in three banks.

Joe, that´s something to do if u really want to give a surprise :P  I have Frank's Red Hot Sauce amongst my pepper sauces. As for tasting food, I can do that even with my peppers - everything hot, though. And I have a portuguese brother in law who can´t take peppers, lol.

Hans, that´s some nice way for eating peppers and Thai food also explores the sweet/hot combination. Indonesian food I haven´t experienced yet, and think dutch food also. Nice music you linked and, as far as the Netherlands may be, anytime u´r near, just let me know that I´ll have some spiced food for u.

Here is the oar update, I have been working a little slower lately because a little consulting work has gotten in the way of hobby time and the Oseberg is a birthday present for the Admiral and her birthday is not until late December.  I don't want to finish it too early because then I will have to come up with another present.

The first step was to cut oak strips 2x12.5 mm.  I cut five strips and taped them together and copied the shape of the kit supplied paddle portion, then cut them into individual pieces.  Originally I intended to cut them out with a scroll saw but since there was so little material to remove I just used a 1 inch belt sander.  I cut the notch where the dowel joins the paddle with the scroll saw and filed it out to the correct size.

For the round portion of the oar I cut 3x3 mm square dowel and routed off all four corners and got them close to round and finished them off in a drill motor with hand held sandpaper.  The routing was tricky since the dowel is so small so I rigged a feather board and guide to keep my fingers away from the blade.

Then I sanded one end flat to fit into the paddle and the other end reduced the circumference to make it into a handle.  The last step was to glue them together and finish the fine sanding.  There were a lot of steps and a LOT of sanding in this process.  30 oars stained and ready to row.

    Hi Everyone,

It has been over a month since my last post because I have been pushing to get the Sovereign completed, and I'm happy to say if is finished. All in all it has been an enjoyable but difficult build. The kit has almost everything needed to build a beautiful model, but the instructions are practically worthless, and I thought the quality of a few of the materials was lacking.

Building the Sovereign is a bit of a humbling experience and has shown me how far I have come in this hobby, but also how far I have yet to go. When I see the level of workmanship of some of my fellow modelers, I shake my head in wonder. There were many times during construction when I knew I should be doing a better job, but just didn't know how. As they say about getting to Carnegie Hall: Practice, Practice, Practice.

Several months ago I received an email from one of our suppliers announcing a major sale on Corel's Wappen von Hamburg. It was less than half price so I bought it and stuck the huge box under my bed. After a brief break from shipbuilding, I will be digging it out and starting another major project.

When I first started building the Sovereign I came across the famous painting of the ship, and it's builder Peter Pett, by Peter Lely. I thought it might be fun to try and duplicate the painting with my own ship and me. Below is the result and some final photos of the model.

    Hi Everyone,

I have moved on from the almost-disaster and have completed the anchors, all the ratlines and the remaining rigging of the foremast. I have primarily been working on the main-mast off the ship, doing all but the lower shrouds and ratlines and adding all the required blocks. Today I started tapering the spars.

    Ironwork in the Head

A few more eyebolts needed to be fitted in the Head for the Jib rigging. One of these (or rather two) are the Bookmin Lashing Ringbolts, which are triangular in shape :

    Spanshackle Ring

Another interesting piece of ironwork is the Spanshackle Ring, of which I am only fitting the port side one. This "ring" is a square section piece of iron which supports the Fish Davit when it is in use. I drilled and filed the centre out from flat sheet - the lower section has a dogleg around the eyebolt which needed rounding off :

    Fish Davit Cleats

And finally I made the two Fish Davit Cleats which support the davits at the railing :

Before taking Gwen to the surgery center for her carpel tunnel ops I could spend a few hours in the shipyard.
btw, we came home about 15:00 hours and she came through with flying colors.

I soldered on the diagonal; braces for the midship railing stanchion and the aft most railing stanchion.

Hopefully I can finish the port side railing Sunday or Monday.  I have an idea on the railing cable and see if that works out

    Here are a few pics.

This is the midship rail stanchion where the cable tensioning takes place.  Between it and the one just forward of it will be the removable boarding ladder.  I still have to make it, another one of those "oh, I almost forgot" things.  I'm glad all yuns help reminding me

This is the most aft railing stanchion with it's diagonal brace.

    Cheers,

OK, here's where I'm at as of this afternoon:

A total of 31 floors made and dry-fitted onto the keel, with about 15 more to go. The last five or so on the stern will be single-piece frames, since the cross-sections of the tail are so small.

Once I stain all the floors, I might have to find a photo backdrop that's not brown…

    Hi Mates,

Thanks for the comments and the likes very kind of you.

Started working on the ropes for the anchor catheads. I wasn’t sure about how to detail the blocks. On the 1/10th the blocks were capsuled with metal bracings, not rope. This created a bit of a scratch of the head.

    So I chose this solution;

    1) re-drilled the block holes increasing their size.
    2) drilled two more holes in each block, one for the hook and the other two for the pulley rods.

Looking through my boxes of “stuff” I found a copper tape strip that had adhesive backing. Hmmmm, that might work?

Cut the tape into a narrow strip and wrapped it around the block.

Glued the hook with CA, and pulled a drill bit through making sure that the hook was not blocking a rope hole.

Cut some flat head nails and glued them to the sides of the block.

Painted the added bits with flat black paint.

Lastly added the ropes attaching the blocks. Next up will be the single side anchor cathead and its block.

In the last two pics; I removed the knightheads that had been built such a long time ago, as well as removing the railing leading out of the upper gun deck, both of which are incorrect for Vasa. I will rebuild the knightheads to correctly reflect the Vasa’s. Tossed the railing (it was so nice (L)

Took a paus in the hole filling job and experimented with the home made nails.
The head diameter is around 0,9 mm and the spacing between the nails is around 9-10 mm.

To all of you who made such nice comments about my model i truly thank you.

The Red Dragon is my first model in a sense because i bought one Red Dragon from Antics it was the only wooden kit they sold,
so when home and atacked the kit i got as far as completing just the hull,i had just joined MSW SO When i compared my workmanship
to some of models in the gallery i realised my model was a bit of a mess so i put it in the trash bin the refuse collecter picked it up and
put it in his cab.I Went back to Antics to see if they had anything i could buy and there on the shelf was another Red Dragon kit so now
i had bought severel  books the result is as you can now see.

Michael, we do have some paradisiac food, and well, maybe some more-than-that drinking . I was raised on a brazilian/russian/italian crossover cultural base and drinking is a fammily problem/matter/thing, truth is I have to hold myself with caipirinhas around  . I´m not the rodeo fan, but we have some good bull raiders in here. And Feijoada is hardcore eating!! Every good brazilian cook has it´s recipe (I do have mine ).
