  1. Hi Brian, I haven’t decided which kind of wood to use for the hull planking something light brown in color with a dark rosewood for the wales. Mike
  2. Thanks Brian, The keel is in place. I used a strip of bloodwood for the false keel similar to Hahn’s technique. Mike
  3. This is a few photos of the windless. I used walnut for the barrel and yellow hart for the gears.
  4. Thanks Hlipplaa, The deck is made of basswood, I have oak in the kitchen of my home. Mike
  5. This is a few more pictures of the great cabin. I added a door to the quarter gallery and the settee. The settee is made from walnut.
  6. Hi Brian, The Proxxon milling machine does a great job on boxwood. I tried it on basswood and it just made a big fuzzy mess. LOL I use files, knifes and some small palm handle gouges for finishing details. It looks like I will get a lot of practice carving on the Fubbs. Mike
  7. Hi Michael, I am glad you like the frieze. I have an easier time carving using a pattern than working with brushes and paint. Mike
  8. The Great Cabin has a frieze shown on the wall in the practicum and sense I am not much of a painter I decided to use a simple floral relief carving for decoration.
  9. Thanks Nils, I have a tendency to make the joints too tight and spend a lot of extra time sanding them to fit. LOL Mike
  10. Thanks Michael, I spend a lot of time on the model so the progress looks faster than it actually is. Mike
  11. Hi Brian, The Warrior will keep you busy for quite a while. Are you going to start it after the Royal William? Mike
  12. Hi Jose, The frames look great you are making good progress. Mike
  13. Thanks Grant, I have had both books on my book shelf for a while and decided to build the Fubbs first since she is smaller and a little less complicated. It would be great to see another Fubbs build on the site. Mike
  14. Hi Brian, I agree the Fubbs is a worthwhile project that I would recommend. Another interesting ship to build is the Sussex I have the book by Gilbert McArdle and it is on my future build list. Mike
  15. Thanks Neptune, A steel plate and magnets are very helpful aligning the tiles. Mike
  16. This set of photos shows the floor being assembled and a 1/64” thick sheet of Beachwood being applied for backing. The final picture shows the floor in place on the model.
  17. Hi Brian, Your parquetry flooring looks great. I tried to stay a little closer to the drawing only changing the pattern a small amount. I noticed you didn’t paint the frieze using a solid color instead. I haven’t decided what to do there yet. Mike
  18. Hi Richard, Thanks, the red wood is Bloodwood, the squares next to the red is Marblewood (marmaroxylon racemosum) from Woodcraft, the brown is cherry and the yellow is yellow heart. I use turning squares of exotic wood to make small parts it is a lot less expensive than buying boards. Mike
  19. I used a different design for the floor pattern. This set of photos shows the tiles being made.
  20. The great cabin is next. This set of photos shows the deck framing and the material for the parquet floor. I am using the same method Gene Bodnar used in his practicum for the floor.
