    Hi Doug,
Here are the clamp photo's. The trick is to use flexible materials that don't slide off when clamped on an angle. However, I lost count on how many time I had to get on the floor looking for the eraser, cork block or clamp. So far I manage to hold on to the Syren.

Well, the 0.5mm drill bits are on order. I decided not to use the golden oak. I can't get the Minwax Golden Oak here in Perth and I'm not happy with the British Paint Golden oak. I am favouring a Baltic Pine stain with a clear matt varnish at the moment but I'm still experimenting. Choosing colours is turning out to be a real pain. Even the red I end up mixing myself from 3 different reds (I have got about 8 tubes of red and a coupe of valleja paints). I hope I don't run out because there is no way I can get the same colour by mixing it a second time...lol.
Enough ranting. Here are some more pics. I am slowly working my way towards the corner with the tightest bend.

Some more progress. No real dramas to that are worth mentioning, just following the instruction to the letter. I'm getting closer to the business end of the planking.
I'll let the photo's do the talking.

I Finished Chapter 4, the Stern Framing, without too much drama, spend quite a bit of time sanding (as usual) and shaping.
Onwards to Chapter 5, the dreaded planking....

Making headway on the filler blocks now. Peter's advice was perfect: Make them slightly larger than needed then sand down to size for a perfect fit. The slight bowing of the bulkhead former is coming out. I am gluing the blocks in one pair at a time from stern to bow. There's no reason to the direction.... I just decided to start that way ;-)

    Hi Peter,
That sounds like a good idea - sanding down from a slightly larger size. From what I have been seeing in other people's logs of the Syren, there is a lot of sanding. ;-)   When it comes to making them level with the deck or not: I am undecided. The deck should have a slight curve to it, and the region is a tight fit for sanding, but I am tempted. Keep sending ideas my way as I work through the build. I am going to need all the help I can get!

Some thoughts: Red Lead paints were often used to prevent all sorts of nautical rot issues.  It is lead oxide (Pb3O4) and is red. Perhaps?

    Hi John,
The way I did it is to cut them about 0.5mm larger and to sand them down until a friction fit. At one stage I had them all sitting in position without glue. I had a slight curve as well. The filler blocks took care of that.
The other choice to make is whether you position them level or slightly above the bulkheads and sand them down to create a fuller deck area (a lot of sanding...) or glue them below that level and glue the deck planks later on the bulkheads. I took the first road but it raised a few eyebrows from other builders. I am not saying that any of what I did is the correct way, just sharing my experience...

Got those bulkheads roughly shaped and in place: not glued yet until I can cut and shape all the filler blocks. The ship is taking on a shape, which just makes me smile a lot.  Long way to go!  Looking at the second image, you can see that there is a slight bow to the bulkhead former, which I will need to figure out how to un-bow, or straighten. Your choice of verbs. Any ideas for easy ways to do this?

That slight bow you have in your frame will straighten up with filler blocks, make sure they are accurate sized, so they do a proper job.
Once out of that, things will be easier.
By the way, warm welcome to the Syren land.

Thank you, Per! I'll be sure to measure twice (or more) and cut once for those filler blocks.

The island detailing is next. I used Shapeways Mk. 95 NSSM's and modifed the masts to the Vinson configuration. The mast still needs to be tweeked and aligned which will be done when the rigging is installed.

That should now bring everyone up to date on the project. Typically I update every weekend. I am working on the rigging now then the radar tower that sits behind the island. Still need to do the whip antenna's around the flight deck and the life raft canisters. Then building many aircraft, deck tractors, and the tilly crane. I hope you have enjoyed my progress and continue to watch the build.

While I have posted many photos of the progress, There are many more photo's of this build in my build album on Flickr. You can view them at https://www.flickr.com/photos/128642409@N05/albums/72157687002588814

On to the flight deck. I am illuminating the runway and the foul line. The runway is done with .75mm fiber optic lines and the stern, bow, and foul line is with .5mm fiber optic lines. To install the fiber optic lines the holes are drilled at a 45* angle. This is required because the fiber optic lines cannot bend 90* or they will crack. I needed the lines to sit flush to the bottom due to only a 1.25mm space between the bottom of the flight deck and the roof of the hangar bays. To hold the optic lines in place I used acrylic gel medium. super glue makes the fiber optic lines extremely brittle. The acrylic gel dries clear and has some flexibility to provide strain relief while handling and routing the lines. I also mounted the lines to stick up about 5mm. The reason for this is it allows me to paint and weather the deck then trim them so they are flush and nearly invisible. The illuminated photos look brighter due to the camera and the section of the fiber optic lines sticking out above the deck.

The hangar deck and doorways were weathered and stained.

Hi there all. Im new to this world of building modelships. I once tried to start the on the Cutty Sark (20 years ago) but never got it finished. To young and to many other things to try.
No asking this time, but wanted to say hello, and thanking you for letting me read about, and look at builds and pick up some hints and tricks.  Post edited.

Got a little work done on the Syren this week, between cooking chores for the big Thanksgiving thing. I have most of the bulkheads sanded and dry fit (no glue yet) and am working on the filler block concept. I also fashioned a jig to hold her straight while all this is taking place. I decided on a jig with one half bolted in place and the other fence made adjustable and managed by using clamps. This way I can keep it tight, but also remove the ship, when needed, with ease.
    Happy day to you all.
