Vasa by puckotred - DeAgostini - Scale 1:65

That is almost unbelievable in that it came that way in a kit. In my experience there is usually at least some sanding, trimming or filling that has to happen to get a good fit. Says a lot for the quality of DeAgostini and as someone who has not had an opportunity to try their products, this is very encouraging. I hope the rest proves be of the same standard.

Very nice. I have built several kits from Deag the Sovereign of the seas and San Felipe and the joints have always been good. This looks a good kit

At the Vasa Museum, I believe they have left gun carriages natural wood on their models, Here's an example from the Kronan exhibit at Kalmar Museum though:

Peter, thanks for the pic. A black stain (maybe ebony?) would do the job I see. Will have to scrape the red paint off from the tight little corners since the carriage is quite small...     

 

We'll hope that the quality of the kit will continue.

Corel's Amphion

You might want to know that Corel is not known for their accuracy.
Their Amphion kit is not actually of the Amphion, but rather another of F.H Chapman's designs, no 4 on plate XLIV in Chapman's "Architectura Navalis Mercatoria":

I have difficulty comprehending the reasoning behind doing this, especially since the real Amphion plans exist, the stern still exist and there are even photos of her.

It is a nice model of a Chapman pleasure Yacht though.
It would be nice if more of the Chapman designs were issued as kits.

going, so busy I am indeed...

 

Peter: yes I know. I got the Amphion and Pegasus more or less half built at the cost of picking them up. Since I knew a little of the history of the real Amphion I was quite surprised at what the kit actually was. But as you said, still a nice model of a yacht.

That would be 132 issues all together.

Today I visited the Vasa museum and I got really tempted to buy DeAgs model of it and build. Fortunately I can control myself and not buy it now. But rest assured, I will

 

First I will finish the Hanse Kogge and Bireme which is "next in line". After that I will se what I choose. But I believe I need another ship under my belt before I try out Vasa.

 

And, maybe it will be easier to buy more installments faster so to speak.

I don't think that this kit is that hard actually. Having checked out the official build logs from DeAgostini of Victory and SoS etc the kits and the instructions seems well suited for builders with one or two models behind them.

I have been looking into this one myself for later down the road and from what I can see the instructions and the way the kit is designed I would not call it a beginner kit but an intermediate one. I think what would make it harder for someone with less experience would be if you are wanting to take it beyond what the kit provides in terms of details. Otherwise the usual difficulties would of course apply with planking, and rigging and making sure everything is squared up and measured out right.

 

I'm looking forward to seeing how this kit builds out to get a better idea of what to expect.

At last the second shipment arrived!! 6 weeks of waiting has come to end. (For this time.) One of those weeks the shipment spent circulating around the neighborhood as it was too large to fit in our letterbox, and some moron at the post office could not copy my name and address from the parcel to a piece of paper without misspelling the lot. 

 

Anyway, 2 issues with this shipment, next month there will be 4 issues so a little more to do then.

The wood parts seem to be of good quality, i like the way they are pre marked with their respective numbers

The wood is great quality, as is the laser cut. I guess the pre marking helps a beginner a lot. You'll have to be illiterate and blind to glue the parts in the wrong place. (I hope this comment won't jump up and bite me later on...)

I've been thinking of one of these: 

 

 

Attached the frame and supports yesterday. Der FRAU has some strange idea that I should go to bed so I didn't post them last night...

 

Frame #7 (the 4th frame), foremast support and bottom "deck":

She'll be one big tub, 4th frame 172 mm wide!

 

 

Next is the anchor. Instructions say to paint it "metallic grey", gives the color code RAL 5011, which is labelled "Steel blue".

I'll probably go with Admirality's matt metal black.

We'll see.

Looks like the parts slot together nicely, always a good sign of a decent kit. I would go with black for the anchor too

The anchor looks also great.

I would not start painting it before you have the two anchors in your possession.

Then they are painted in the same way.

 

I painted my anchors in a gun metal base color.

Compared with the Billings Wasa this woodwork looks very neat and easy to build,

I built a plastic airfix kit years ago and used this website for reference. It's a big archive of info if ever needed. One day I will build this ship in wood, just as soon as I have a place to put it when it's done, and the budget to buy it...

Cobr@ and Patric: I will probably go with "matt metal black from Admirality. if nothing because I like that particulary paint. It really looks like the old painted cannons and anchors you see in museums etc.

The blue/white/red shield was a pain to paint, the whole thing only 20 mm high. Hopefully the fuzzy lines will not show as much when the whole stern is completed.

 

Now only the anchor left, then another 5-6 weeks of waiting. But next time theres 4 issues coming, maybe they will last a week at least...

Nice little decoration. The only upside of having to wait is it keeps your interest up wanting to build

Nice job on the shield. That will look great on the ship.

 

I agree that the wait times would definitely help in keeping the desire up to work on her. Having wait all those weeks in between steps would have me ready to get going every time that package showed up on my porch. On a plus side though, it would be great for allowing two builds to happen at the same time. Being able to work on a different one while waiting would help with the downtime and keep burnout from happening on either one.

A small update on the anchor.

Anchor is drawn by Fred Hocker from the Vasa museum so that will be accurate. But the anchor stock was not. 

Also impossible to hide the plywood layering so I made new.
