Cheers for the comments Michael.

Sorry for not posting for a while but life has really got in the way. Got made redundant in May so have running around trying to get another job . Then last week my wife got taken into hospital for open heart surgery for a replacement valve so have been running to and from the hospital so not a lot happening on the build and I have lost a bit of mojo to get on with it. On the bright side I would like to thank Michael aka mid 1400s for sending me lots of pictures on the rigging as the ones from Deag are totally wrong. I have managed to rig the bowsprit sails and still got some more ratlines to do but onwards and upwards . Hopefully will get some more done next week. As always thanks for the likes and following.

Martyn,

Certainly great relief for you regarding your wife - cheers !

Your rigging is looking excellent  - happy that those files (I got them from Karl) were useful as well.

Still odd to me that DeAgostini would have poor rigging sheets as part of their kit. Frank (fmodajr) and I were laughing yesterday about STILL waiting for the Vasa II rigging book to be released - should have been about two years ago. Our Vasa's would still be collecting dust waiting for the rigging to be done as close as poss. to original with historical accuracy  --  haha

PS: According to Fred Hocker the 1/10th is not quite right either. He mentioned that some bits are "English" -

Regards,

Michael

Great to hear that your wife is coming home!

I've noticed, as have many others that rigging plans typically seem to be the most neglected part of many kits. Especially details such as where they belay. It is almost a must to have outside source material to even attempt to do a semi realistic rigging and even then the older the ship the harder it is and non English vessels harder still. Many rigging books focus on English ship rigging as they did the best job in preserving nautical practice knowledge over the centuries. As a result, many models of ships from other countries end up with "English" rigging components. As for the Vasa II, I am holding off my own build of her till that book comes out. At least that is the plan... :)

In any case, your rigging is looking fantastic! Clean and detailed and the addition of the sail rigging adds even more. Well done!

Thanks for all the great replies guys

A small update. My wife is slowly getting better still a long way to go but onwards and upwards we go  :D

All the rigging has been completed on the foremast and I have fitted a missing gunport on the mizzen quarter deck .

Next job fitting the gunport lids to the side, quite a long job as each one is pinned with a brass pin to give them strength. The thread hanging down the sides are from the rigging as I leave them till I put the rope coils over the belay pins so I can adjust the sails to how I like them .

cheers for following

Martyn,

Been away the last couple of weeks – been following on my iPad, but forgot my login info haha – now back at home so I can post again to builds that I follow 🤔 A big congratulations!! indeed a beautiful example of the Vasa -

PS: Also really like the stern lantern - was it part of the kit?

Cheers,

Cheers for the comments guys and the likes

Glad to see you back Michael and looking forward to seeing your Trinadad X section again. The lantern was scratched built with a bit of poetic license as the lantern hasn't been found, but who knows as their is a lot of bits and pieces still to go through so you never know

Martyn,

I checked the DeAgostini instructions - interesting that the kit would not include "a" lantern, especially with the Museum being involved.  Yours looks great. As you know

I'm working on a "fix" for mine.

Doubtful that it will be found - though glass bits might offer a clue, assuming that it was mounted at launch.

PS: your painting details for all of those figures is absolutely superb :imNotWorthy:

Took a bunch of photos of the long boat when I visited the museum in 018, tempted to try to scratch build one -- or not haha

So what's next - a rest first I would imagine.

Cheers,

Hi Michael a visit to the Vasa museum is on my bucket list and I would love to see your pictures of the ships boat.

There are a few bits missed on the Deag build like the hallard pulleys and the gunport on the quarterdeck but all in all its a cracking kit .

Cheers for looking

Martyn,

I also remember that Clayton on the Vasa site had some photos of the boat - he built one, if I remember - iffy these days haha

Hello Martyn,

You are doing a great job, I really like your Vasa and the figurines let the ship come alive!

I am almost finished with my present ship (Agamemnon) and I consider doing the Vasa next. By coincidence I came upon the de Agostini version. Before,  I only knew of the Corel, Mantua and Billing boat kits. But since the people from the Vasa museum seem to approve to the DeAgostini vasa, I wonder if it is the best version  Do you agree? Can you recommend buying it?

Happy modelling and

greetings from Germany

Martin

Hi Martin and thanks for the great comments. The Deag Vasa is probably the most accurate one out there as Fred Hocker from the Vasa museum had a lot of input into the kit . There are still a few bits that need changing like the hallards as the rigging has been simplified probably for first time builders. Also there is a missing gunport on the quarter deck and a missing post ports but these are very easy to fix . The carvings are really good and there are a lot of them. I thoroughly enjoyed building this model and I really recommend it.
