Hi all.  I have several barrels to decorate in my Spirit of Mississippi build and the only decoration other than varnish are black hoops.  Having no other painting on the barrels they need to be right first time.  Not having done this before and painting not being my forte, has anyone any good hints for painting the hoops right first time

This is one of the barrels and the idea is to paint the rebated hoops.  Help please  :piratetongueor4:

Hi

This is how I do it: First I sand down these much to thick rings so that I have a flat barrel surface.Than I engrave button and top, because the planks (ohoh.. in german it is called "daube" - don't know the english word, maybe "stave") always are a bit longer and form a ring to hold the buttom and top plate in place. Than I engrave small lines do simulate the "staves" from which the barrel is originally built. Next is to paint or varnish the barrel. Last step I use some small strips of metal, paper oder tape (already blackened) and glue it around.

Greetings

Thom

Micklen,

Even if it is your forte, painting is probably not the best way to do it – and you can end up with as much paint on the barrel as on the hoops! :(

I think Thom has perhaps the best solution, which is one I've also used – thin black paper. Cut this into scale strips, using a sharp knife and metal rule, and then glue suitable lengths on in the appropriate places. As he suggests, sand down the overscale hoops on the barrel first. You'll find this works quite well, and is also reasonably quick. Make sure though that the strips are level and parallel to each other, and be sparing with the glue.

Thanks to you gentlemen all for posing an answering a question I hadn't thought of just yet.  I would have attempted painting and probably gotten very frustrated.

That is really good.  I love that method.

What I have tried is filling the grooved hoops with paint and then sanding off to remove any (a lot!!!) paint that had leaked over

It didn't look to bad but was not a patch on yours

So that method will be filed away for use

Thanks a lot

Mick

This gave me an idea, what if you get adhesive backed copper tape (as used for coppering the hull) cut into thin strips and blackened chemically or with a marker. You then just apply the strips around the barrel.

I am using self-adhesive isolation tape, cut in small strips. Only one very tiny drop of cyano glue on the ends. I also do some overlapping because rings in reality also overlapped. It all depends on scale, the larger the scale the more I tend to metal strips. You can also cut the thin aluminium from tea lights in strips.

Better on a flank to grind off and replace these hoops with narrow strips of a copper or brass foil, or paper.

Hi.

I removed any rings that were on the Barrels and replaced them with brass strips.( brass not cut in straight strips but curved )

Soldered the stripes together using the barrels for sizing,

Painted then fitted to barrels.

Brass strip was some very thin shim stock that I has lieing around.

End result was very pleasing to the eye.

First I sand down these much to thick rings ...

Actually, depending on period and circumstances the hoops may not have been made from iron at all, but rather from split twigs of hazelnut or birch (I believe). There is a special technique to hook the ends together without nails or the likes. Such barrels would not contain any ironwork, but would be constructed entirely from wood. I have seen photographs of such barrels being made well into the 20th century, e.g. for shipping herring.

One trick I use for painting edges and thin lines: Use the side of your brush not the tip.  Start with something like 00 size brush and dip it into your paint.  You want the paint to be slightly thinned.  If you are using something like a Valejo Model Color paint, you can paint straight from the container.  Any of the oils you are going to want to thin.

Dip your brush into the paint and then touch it to a paper towel.  This will remove much of the liquid from the brush, while leaving the pigment, thus eliminating the bleeding effect.  It will take more coats, but its worth it.

Next run the side of the brush bristles along the raised edge.  This ensures that you dont have to rely on a steady hand or the brush tip to paint the edge.  I will try to find a picture to explain it better.

Hope it helps
