SS Great Britain kit

As a UK west country man I so wish there was a kit or a set of scratch built instructions for this wonderful ship, it seems such an over sight that this subject has never been tackled.

Ian, as a young lad visiting my Grandparents in Bristol and then living there for 20yrs it was a real treat to visit and play on the ship I can vagley remember all the refit they did, I have a framed painting of this great ship and am trawling the net to find plans etc, maybe we could put our heads together and see what we could put together if interested for a build

There is a British Author who 10-20 years ago white a book about building a model of the Great Britain.  I never actually put my hands on the book but I did have another book that he wrote about HMS Thunderer.  Some detective work is required.

I have a picture somewhere of being very young and my parents showing me her being towed up the river to the dock on her pontoon. A rusty hulk

Just bought the hardback copy--£4.99 including postage(Amazon UK)--- bargain 

 

 

I still cant believe how over looked this ship is with the kit companies-- wood or plastic...

I guess that the museum purchased the completed model from a factory like this.

yes, it is one of her many re-incarnations-- she was changed about quite a bit over her service, a nice model... I will one day get around to building her from scratch-- still think she is a most over looked potential kit for the general model ship building community to issue.  On a slight note-- The go ahead has been given to build a full size replica of the the SS Great Western -- a paddle steam in the adjacent dock in Bristol.

You can purchase the original plans and the changed plans at the Bristol SS GB site. I ordered digital high-resolution copies and am waiting for a response.

 Frank, I first thought you bought a kit of the SS Great Britain and I got all excited but alas. I wish someone would manufacture a kit of the SS Great Britain, I'd be one of the first in line to purchase it.

Hi, 

 

I am currently building the ssgb.   I got the digital plan from the museum and also William Mowell's book plus the Haynes manual.  I only live 20 miles away from the ship so I visited several times to take many photos and lots of measurements.  Because of the size of the shop I am doing it in 1/96 scale which does make all the details small.  I've been making it for a year now and just got to the hull painting stage.  I might finish it in 2 or 3 years. 😁
