Sail decorations

I'd like to put sails on my model of the Sao Miguel.  Pictures of the model show that the sails have huge crosses on them.  Does anyone out there have any ideas how I can replicate these?  I experimented with inks, marking pens, and paints but they all bleed over the edges of the outline, and are "washed out" on the reverse side.  I don't mind redoing the decoration on the reverse side as long as the edges are sharp.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

What material are you using for the sails?

I'm using a fine mesh cotton fabric.

You could possibly use Tshirt transfer paper or decal sheet..

I don't think you have to decorate both sides. I beleave the cross was only painted on the front of the sail.

I embroidered the sails on my Santa Maria. I would show pictures but she was sold.
