By the way, did you know that all those steamboats/ships wouldn't be there without the invention of Stephensen which is applied for many many years. So is that not ship related. . . ;)

Hi Jim,

just found your build log for the Robert-E-Lee. It looks really amazing, very accurate and nice build!

Years ago, I build the same kit and it is always great to see again this ship. If you are interested, here you can see a few pictures of my own one:

Will follow your thread.

Joachim,

Thanks for stopping by.  I looked at your build...excellent!  Mine is not going to be nearly as good.  I don't intend to mount the flags or anchors and I am not installing the aft lifeboat.

The anchors just seemd out of place on the boat and when I researched riverboats in general, I could not find a picture of a single one with anchors.  They evidently spent most of their not-moving time either up against the riverbank or tied to something....

No excuse for not putting on the aft lifeboat other than I was too far along when I noticed......

John,

Yes, I was familiar with the Stephenson Rocket from my Model RR days.  Steam was such a great powering method in that era....perhaps a bit dangerous but there would have been no industrial revolution without it.  I saw your other note about putting my stagecoach build here....have you got any suggestions as to a site where it might be acceptable? By the way, I do not speak a second language...... :(

Cheers,

Jim

For the record, Stephenson did not invent the steam engine, he just improved its used for locomotion (although he did invent a method of valve control).

I should add, nice work on the Lee, Jim. ;)

Jim,

I recall that on MSW 1.0, Danny Vadas told the story of joining a stage-coach building forum, only to be told that he wasn't welcome because he was building his from a kit and they only catered to scratch builders. Not much help I'm afraid, except as a reminder that not all forums are as friendly and well run as MSW.

Thanks Andy,

Yes, steam drive was invented prior to the Rocket.....

On another note, the mill I worked in had a steam driven shear that could cut 24" x 24" hot steel blooms.  The diameter of the ram was 20" and the steam accumulator was 60"....it was operated by pushing a long lever to slowly release the steam pressure into the ram.  Quite noisy and very interesting.  Somewhere on the casing was a build date in the 1890's by Mesta Machine, I seem to remember.

John,

Thanks.....as you know, we wouldn't be doing this if it wasn't fun! :)

Grant,

Thanks for the look in....seems you've been gone for a while..glad you're back! :10_1_10:

As for other build sites, I'll keep that in mind....this is a great site, just made my contribution. :)

It sure won't be as much fun to build the stagecoach without the input and banter that one finds here....Oh well..... :(

Hi Jim

Great looking build  :D

I am a new member here and I have very recently started the OcCre Spirit of the Mississippi 1:80 kit

It will be very good for me following your build to see if it can help me and to see the differences

It looks similar in some ways but very different in others

I will start my own log tomorrow hopefully

Good luck with the move

Mick

Thanks Mick, And welcome aboard! :10_1_10:

A big difference between the Lee and the Spirit is the scale....at 1/160 it's quite small. There are a number of Spirit build logs here...you probably found them already....

Looking forward to your build log.  Part of the fun is the comments, suggestions and just plain baloney that one can share with others during a build.  Sad to say I had just cleaned up all my build pics from 2011 before the data loss. The ones I've posted here go only back to 2012.

As for the move, we are now moving out of our 'camp site' so the remodeling can start.  We will be staying in my in-laws home until it's over.  I'm hoping to finish this build there...with a table set up in the garage or somewhere.....

Cheers,

Jim

Jim,

I have to correct you….

There is not a build log yet from the Spirit of Mississippi from OcCre.

The only one who is on this forum is in the Gallery of completed ships…..and that is mine.

The others are the King of Mississippi from AL.

And thanks for reposting all those beautiful pictures.

One question though, because I was not able to find it on Google.

The braces between the funnels?  Do they serve a purpose (holding the funnels in place maybe) or are they just for decoration?

Thanks and take care,

Hi Anja,

Those braces are for support...similar ones are used on grain delivery systems that attach to silos. It is a way to add support that is a lot less weight than typical trusses.   Thanks for the comments and question! :)
