Glory of the Seas 1869 by rwiederrich - FINISHED - 1/96 - medium clipper

Recommended Posts

Rob,

In case Mike hasn't seen it yet, I'm going to share this fascinating article with him. As soon as I read this I thought of Glory of the Seas, especially since it mentioned that this anchor was actually discovered in Unalaska, a place where she was specifically towed to as a salmon processing plant.

Right.  There must be some info on if and when she lost an anchor.  However, the images of her being fitted out before she left for Alaska.....show she already possessed her iron anchors with iron stocks

Interesting notion, if it was true.

Rob,

One thing's for sure. There wouldn't have been a lot of vessels with 1850s era wooden stock anchors plying the waters of Unalaska, Bristol Bay, Alaska. From the size of this remarkably well preserved example, it would have had to be a fairly large ship too, to need such a substantial anchor.

Oh....I agree.  But we have to remember...she had iron stock anchors while being fitted out as a canary.  Pics of this time frame don't lie.  Now, when she was still active in the timber trade...she did indeed travel North to Alaska to trade timber...we know that from other pictures of her there.  She might have lost an anchor then....before her canary days.  We need to know if any records show or document such an event.

Rob, this work is very reminiscent of the style of Antonio Jacobsen, although it's darker than most of his other works.

Rob,

While any new Glory of the Seas scene is always welcome, still it sickens my stomach greatly, to see her literally "hung out to dry" like this....

Rob,

That first overall deck view of Glory of the Seas from her bow looking towards her stern in the distance, really drives home what a substantial vessel she really was. Your Clipper Ship is so accurate that, other than the model building background, it would be easy to believe your staring at the actual vessel herself. Great to see you in action again.

She most likely came from a whaler who visited those waters regularly.

Back to work on Glory of the Seas.

And back to the brutal rigging of the sheets, braces and tacks.
Man belaying these lines will be fun.  I still have to add all the rope coils too.

Everything is loose and run to make sure clearances are true and there is no interference when the yards are hoisted and sails are set.
