no worries John

 

i have started on drilling and squaring out the 3x3 mm holes through the 2nd deck :

 

the bottom of the poles have a 1mm brasswire atached to fit in a 1 mm hole so that the whole construction is sturdy.

 

once the 3rd deck is one i will make the smae 3x3 mm holes there then cut off the pole drill a 1 mm hole in that to fix the top part on. this because the poles are not at a 90 degree angle except on top

thanks Sjors. this was just a dry fit to see how it would look. i am drilling th e holes first then finish off the doors and shutters.install the 2 stairs. varnish the second deck. install the lights then i can glue the 3rd deck. drill th eholes there and then i can finaly install the railings . so still weeks to go before that. but there are a lot of railings to install but not as many as you have ratlines to make

 

thank you WIm . i had visions of me knocking down the railigns while building or while handling her and then i thought of doing it this way

to make the 3x3 holes i first mark it on the deck then use a bit of plywood underneath to prevent splintering the wood

 

then use a 3mm drill wiht my pinvise to slowly drill the hole

 

since i was unable to get some needle files from my local hobby store ( the supplier didnt deliver any and i cant tell you an eta when i wil have them

so i use the tip of this squae file

 

once the hole is big enough i use the 3x3 wood dowel with brass wire at the bottom to push through too

and with th eprecut railing parts make sure its sqaured off before pushing the brasswire into the lower deck to mark where to drill the1 mm holes

 

takes me about 10 - 15 minutes per hole . over the 2 decks i ll need to drill about 40 of them

oh i doubt she would float

 

after finishing the holes on one side i figured i try out to see if i can make the door a bit better:

 

first and easiest is framing the door. making the curve for the top with sapelliu though is a nightmare and if you look good you can see it broke in the middle but i am hoping all the railings in front wil make it unnoticable

 

then i add the middle frame and the solid part on the bottom (this is from 1x4 mm sapelli)

 

then the 2 horizontal frames follow to finsih the left side

 

do the same on the right side and then finish off with glueing the window to the back

 

here are both of the doors.

 

any comments on which one looks the better ?

Sapelli is the hardest type of mahogany I understood. There exist another type mahogany called Sipo which is easier to handle. In my humble opinion I prefer the left door. If you could arrange to create a kind of smoked glass or someting like that, I think you have the ultimate profit of your led lights.

Since you ask... I think I prefer the solid door on the right... it gives contrast to all the windows with glass. The left one is good, well done, but it isn't as distinctive as the solid door. IMO of course

the opinion here was divided too.

 

i decided to go with the glass door. partialy because it was easier to make. partialy because that was how the original ones look.

 

i have finished the second door . the glas is done the same way as the ones on the first deck (scratched then painted black to get a diamond pattern). everything on that side is done so i could add the shutters and then touch them up where i scratched the paint of by accident.

so happy i got the first curved railing on the stairs. as you cna tell it did split a bit but i will fix that up . hope the second one will go as smoothly

 

also finished cutting all the holes in the second deck

 

really happy with the progress this weekend. next wil be to install the 2 doors on the second side.

the 2  at the front and back are going to be a challenge as i didnt realise i dont have enough access from the inside to make it easy

Good progress my friend, with some staining the split in the rail can hardly be seen since the long handrails are at the wall side.

alas when trying to dryfit the first stair i could not fit it properly

not sure where i went wrong but i dont see away to fix it without taking it all apart and that woudl most likely brake the sideparts

 

i set them aside for now and worked on  finishing the 2nd deck stateroom but soon i wil need to put the stairs on or i cant go further

Adrieke, sorry to hear, remember I had to cut the last bar at the top of the sidepart before it fitted. By doing so the stairs came closer to the deck. Maybe it is the same problem you are facing now ?. (just a thought and trying to be helpful).

thanks for reminding me John. yes that is part of the problem but i also have that i have a 3 mm height gap between deck and top of stairs. i think i pulled the bottom stright stairs a bit make them not horizontal. i need to try and fit the second stairs to see if it got the same problem but they came apart a bit when trying to fit it in. drilling the holes and making the centre pole longer does not work as the stairs in eachothers way for the fitting. so i ll need to cut them down  again.

 

i am trying to put i t out of my mind and  concentrate on my work but i know its going to be hard. i dont want to give up but if it comes down to havign to scratchbuild the stairs i dont think i am up for that

Take your time my friend and I am sure you will overcome this hurdle. Scratch building these banisters are not an easy job. If you have to separate the various parts you better try to dissolve the glue first.

naah i cant ignore them too long they are too much bothering me. but i need to be in the right mood to tackle them and after a days work tackling problems my mind wants a rest so i work on the easy things

 

i got the parts from the hardware store . the board itself is from pressed cardboard (i think ) and the pedestals are actualy drawer knobs.

 

i know its not the best looking board but it was cheap

Your display board looks fine to me, I only asked because mine was different.

I like using normal materials as drawer knobs, they are ideal for pedestals.
