The wood has arrived from Cornwall Model Boats

Very good service

I am NOT going to start today though and tomorrow we are off

I have to get my fishing gear ready anyway

I am looking forward to pulling some nice bream out of the river

And anything else that fancies what I put in front of it

 

Anyway back to the wood, here it is 

 

 

IMO the Beech and Walnut look so much better than the Lime and Sapeli

The Lime has no real body to it and the Sapeli is a little too red IMO

I think they will look even better with a bit of polish or good varnish

I am going to take forever to do this as I want the planking to be good

I have noticed most people use a three thingey   spacing for the joints and that is what I will do I think

I was thinking of making my main length of plank 150mm if that is agreeable to most

It would mean a plank length of 7.6 meters or about 26.5 feet

Sounds a shade long   

Historically what would the plank length have been, or is it 'How long is a piece of string'

 

I will be keeping an eye on things with the iPad when we are away

Catch a few fish and make a picture of that

Hi all

I am back     

Had a great holiday if maybe overdoing the fishing making myself just a bit achy  

Fishing wasn't brilliant either   :mellow: 

The river was just not quite right

Plenty of really small stuff but nothing of really any size

Sjors said he wanted to see the results though so we took a photo of the biggest fish I caught, a Perch

 

 

Anyway, I got back to the Endeavour as I had missed the build

I had a go at the first few rows of the top planking, trying to follow the line of the ship

 

 

What do you think????

I am not sure whether you are really supposed to start from the top, but I wanted to follow the line well

For the planking…..if you want to follow that line, go on with what you are doing !

Try to follow that line as long as possible.

You find out your self when the plank wants to go an other way.

Then you can switch to the bottom.

Really taking my time letting the contact adhesive dry and pinning where necessary

 

 

Fairly pleased with how it's coming along

I am just approaching where the stern really changes shape and I cannot as yet picture what I will need to do to keep the line I want as I want that line to continue to the rubbing strakes

Below those I will allow the planks to find their own position

No doubt it will all come together nicely, I hope

I think you are in really good shape Mick. The upper works are the most important, being the most visible and unlikely to be covered with anything but paint. Depending on how you finish the lower hull - painted or coppered, the lower planking can be a little more loose. Best thing is your hull shape looks great - well founded and that is what really counts.

I am now at the point where the wood changes

 

 

I am not 100% sure what direction to take now

The bottom of the rubbing strakes come to about halfway down the first Walnut strip

So do I now start at the keel or do I do a few more rows here allowing them to open up where they want

The instructions sort of say start from top and bottom and meet in the middle

However they haven't forced the strips to follow the gunwales so that will make the way they run different I guess

Any pointers on this will be well received

Then starting from the keel till i reach the planks that is already there.

Then you have to use stealers.

With that, I can not help you because I don't understand a thing about drop planks and stealers.

But someone else can give you an answer on that.

Yes I think I see that Sjors

They are having to be forced now to follow the line of the gunwales

It is difficult to see in the photo but I have already had to use a filler piece to take tension of the strip so I will complete the row I have started then see how the next row feels and then I will probably start at the keel

 

Any more thoughts ?????

A simple solution (unless I'm off track here), is to use a pencil and draw on your 4 rows of Wales. Then run that across the midline. Are you going to paint the bottom of the hull? If so the run of lower planks won't matter. Given the blunt bow you'll have to use stealers etc. happy to PM my progress of photos I kept from the old MSW. It is tricky

Bit more plankety planking   

There's not many planks going on each day but I am trying to get a fairly nice line and as we all know it's not the easiest thing in the world

 

 

I am not sure it's looking 100% how I want it so I may sit for a bit tomorrow and look at it playing with strips and a few pins

I may try and work a few more to follow the line at the top

I may not

As I say I will have a bit of a play, look at other builds and try and come up with something

Hi Mick

You'll get there! The most important aspect of your effort is that your difficult hull now has the correct shape. Please don't take this the wrong way but your lower planking set out is a bit eccentric. The upper works look great though. I'd  suggest a painted - aged white - lower hull to the waterline. This is consistent with how the Endeavour was finished. Just my thoughts...

I have taken off a couple of planks I didn't like and it is a bit more regular now

The upper part is still very much following the line if the Beech planks

If it keeps coming like this with no more real problems I will be happy

Right I have put on another couple of rows and I am at a bit of an crossroads

I am very happy with the side and the planks have followed on fine

Obviously though the bow and stern do not look as they would if I has started the planking horizontally

My thoughts are to now come up from the bottom and finish it from there rather than going any further from the top

But I am not sure whether I am right

I know it is not going to look quite right but where do you think I should plank now ??????????????

Obviously there is a lot of rubbing and sanding to be done

I have done a couple more rows at the bottom and I now really want to know if I am going the right way or whether I should do more on the upper half 

 

 

I am really not sure which way to go now and I would really like some ideas if there is anyone out there

Do you have any pictures of your boat from the instructions or the box? That would help see the manufacturer's intent, especially manufacturers pictures that also show the bow, stern as well as the side view. That might help us see what the manufacturer intended.

"Simple Hull Planking for Beginners" is comprehensive, detailed and actually takes you through planking a POB hull.

 

**Around page 21 it shows a side by side picture of "right" and "wrong" looks for planking the hull. This PDF may have some of the answers you need. I am using it to guide me on my model which is my first ship model.

 

I have found that if I do some research first, I am better able to pose questions that other members can answer. Remember, I am a rank beginner so this is what works for me.

Problem is Richard, they have planked it totally differently using a horizontal plank rather that following the gunwales as the real ship would have

It's not a lot of help looking at the replica either as they would have shaped the planks to fit

Looking at the instructions it is difficult to transfer the lines to mine, but they do seem to take the upper part of the planking slightly lower, but not much

Otherwise it does look pretty close

Again, I will sit and look at it for a bit and also see if I gat any more pointers on here

I want to help you but……what i can see is that you follow the lines of the planks.

That's what I do all the time.

Wood makes his own way.

I think when they build that ship ages ago, they have the same problem.

So each ship has is own figure of planking.

There is no standard measurement for it.

Just follow the line and it will comes together.

Maybe someone else can clear it better for you then me.

Or maybe this is what  the fever let me wright

Ok I had a good look round and made a decision

The gap is now closing   

 

 

I think some of the problems I was having was caused by using slightly tacky contact adhesive and it wasn't spreading properly   

Also the top half was becoming difficult to do

So

I am using CA glue and working from the bottom half and 'Touch Wood' it is coming together   

I will now be glad to get it done BUT I am not rushing it

Hi Mick

 

I didn't understand your question until I realised, from the later photos that this was your third layer of planks. You have probably spotted the issue but you have to much space midships for planks compared to the bow and, particularly, the stern. The area looks like a lens in shape with a wide centre and points at both ends. I don't think this is going to go away whichever direction you head in. The "lens" will get smaller but it will not go away. It means you'll be bringing planks to finish as points. This isn't correct.

 

I wouldn't despair however. My advice is:

- Finish your planking as best you can and with regard to making it symmetrical - port/starboard - at best.

- Fill and sand the hull below the waterline until it is smooth as a baby's bum.

- Paint the hull below the waterline (this is no shame and it looks good too!).

 

I've never built Endeavour but have tackled a hull as difficult if not worse - The Dutch Whaler by Sergal. My planking of this is totally wrong but I had no idea at the time and no internet and no other leads. However it worked in the end. The trick, I think, is you have to get some upward sweep of the planks fairly early on instead of running the planks parallel. The upward sweep gets rid of the consequence you are now facing. I'd post some pictures here but I don't think they'd be useful.

Don't be afraid to do another layer. Have a look at the AOTS or Parkin's Endeavor to get your run of the planks
