Rich based on this painting Looks like she was some time rigged with only one big topsail instead of two narrow ones  - same as flying fish.

just an observation though...

Vladimir, I don't "place much stock" in the authenticity of this particular artists works. Note the sparse bow which lacks any figurehead at all. From her fitting out after her launch "GLORY of the SEAS" was rigged with double Topsail on all 3 yards.

Shaping yards...

Observing American yards,  center thickness of yard reaches

quite up far toward end and than rather suddenyl more sharlpy narrows Down maintaining Elegant line. . I tried to mimic that, Well more and at some less sucessfully. Still Few of them remained to be worked. Had to join one with inner steel wedge - noone would know :)

And then - funny part starts :)

thank you for any remark etc...

Vladimir, beautiful work on these yardarms!

Posted (edited)

Man Vlad...you're moving out on those yards.

Great job for sure, that's a lot of detailed work.....     I notice you have six yards that have trucks mounted to them......Glory (and most all Howser rigged clippers) only had the lower yards on each mast that had iron trucks supporting the yards away from the mast.  The lower topsail yard had a sling banded to it and it was mounted to the top band by a crane arm and then was supported by an iron support bar from underneath.

All the other yards were of a composite band constructed to the yard that slid around the mast and permitted the yard to be lowered and raised...via the haulyard and downhauls.   So I'm a bit confused by all the banded mounted trucks you have on 6 yards.  Could I be mistaken?

Rob thanks,  this IS typical me. Following flying fish model shipways plans how to do IT properly i hard laboree those and now you are telling me not necessary. I Made that hanging mechani fór molser yards and Power and upper topsail yards.  Flying fish plan IS having them even on topgalant yards.

So you are saying i should malé IT from now same as royal with wooden lock collar? Hosť i never to study those attachings more...:)

Foremast composite  construction.

I had whole day today so I decided i Will try my first composite masting. Please be light on me. :)

So far im more than Happy Another one Will be even Better as i figured IT out and i mušt say IT was pretty pretty easy. No powertool used only knife and sandpaper rolled in Hand. Sanding IT roundto perfect circle   took 2 minutes in Hand moving around its Axis. Not legthwise. Probably i feared Ilit more than necessary.

Foremast IS 14 milimeter in diameter.

I measured walnut "Beam" of 10 MM so each added Strike would be 2mm wide.

IMG_20220120_115108.thumb.jpg.910db66051d160c828d3e1bb20ff6455.jpg

Upon observation composite groove IS not that wide and IT widens from inside out so i took about 1.6 MM and Made line so i could plane corner off straight.

IMG_20220120_113940.thumb.jpg.a386e19736c504edad3281e234dcb9de.jpg

I cut upper cap then.

IMG_20220120_121321.thumb.jpg.6b854e64e33ea4ca82441e0eea45b08a.jpg

Rounded mast hrad underneath.

IMG_20220120_122809.thumb.jpg.258628a76244acc90260eb1e5319bc68.jpg

Measured start of composite groove.

IMG_20220120_123639.thumb.jpg.6fd841d712a394804b6762f4c02dd2f8.jpg

And started a little by knife  so my planer wont reach out of Area.

IMG_20220120_123859.thumb.jpg.54a649d839403344f41b0e6777ad2c9e.jpg

After corners were cut straight along line, 6 MM wide strakes were glued Up. By this tíme I knew i woudnt like to paint the final grooves as contrasting walnut AMD white wood would make IT done itself.

And its always nicer than paint i think. Little wedges creatijg whole round fór bands would be hard to glue if painted so...IMG_20220120_135432.thumb.jpg.a66f609fc4cadfb5c3dca67e2bb28fd3.jpg

Now there shpuld to inside pieces of peculiar shape. :) Kind of there angle woods following this shape Up. I wentvforvfar easier version. Glued in square wood but on Another masť i Will be wiser i Will try to chamfer off from wider square wooden Strike so IT would Filo Up "hole" even tighter almost touching corners - thats the goal.trick IS to make sure little pieces are striaghtly cut. When glued Up i removed tops by knife so they wont unglue when sanding beijg little lower. Than i lightly rounded sandpaper in Hand and formed circle and rounded carefully with Few times unless semicircular after i knew no one piece would fall off , i predseda tighter and IT formed perfect round. Ať the end i added paper bands...voila :)

See Vlad....you did it....and nicely too.  What did you use for your banding?

I like your approach a lot and at your larger scale you can accomplish finer detail.  Well done.

Here is a closeup of Glory's main mast chapeling and banding.

Notice the tapered ends terminating in the sharp valley recess.

And here is a picture of a built up mast that came from an (unknown) wrecked clipper.  This is the mizzen mast.

Again...notice the chapeling beneath the banding....this design is similar to yours with a flat valley floor.  Unlike that of Glory's replacement main mast in the previous image.

Notice the number of iron pins utilized to secure this mast...in this one section.  These mast were quite robust.

This image shows slightly different built mast.  the chapeling is limited to just under the banding and the valley's appear quite pronounced.

Typically built masts had hollow centers and just atop the mast cap there was a vent cap to permit air flow within the mast....to prevent rot.

I have yet to add this feature to my mast caps.

Hope this helps in understanding built up masts.  you're doing a wonderful job.

Thanks Rob. I love black thick paper. Fast and Works quite Authentic.  I want to save precious brass for functional bands with gooseneck etc and for yards. There Will be plenty. :)

Vladimir, those masts look very nicely done. Kudos on your courage to take on this additional challenge.

Thanks much Rich.  That was first attempt. Main mast is Better, i found out how to apply tight wedges so it is as

close to originál as possible. Lets Hope i Can maintain that level. Fingers crossed.

Rob, looking at the complex construction of this wooden mizzen mast gives me greater appreciation for the advanced knowledge, scientifically developed and truly sophisticated approach these ship builders utilized in building these powerful masts. Hidden iron rebar reinforcement, hollow centers with ventilated airflow to prevent rot? Who knew? By reproducing these construction details, you guys may actually lengthen the lives of your own masts. Thanks for sharing your in depth knowledge of these fascinating structures.

Vladimir, it's been so long that I've seen your beautiful Glory hull, that I forgot how impressive she is. It's really nice to see her again. Such a lovely, long profile! You have also done a marvelous job on constructing your t'gallant yard. This will be a fascinating build to continue following.

Rob, Vladimir.... inspired by our year's long journey of discovery of the true appearance of "GLORY of the SEAS" I decided to sketch the most accurate reconstructions of other capital ships McKay designed: his premier Extreme Clipper "Staghound" followed by the famous Extreme Clipper "Flying Cloud" (incidentally both of these ships are in the exact same scale by pure coincidence) and finally his mammoth Clipper "Sovereign of the Seas." sketched on the back of an envelope.

Later on I intend to include the Australian Clipper "Lightning". I recently discovered another Samuel Walters oil which shows her with her original female winged figurehead, again mounted on a similar pedestal as Glory's goddess 'Athene'. After I write the NRJ article (I missed Jan 1st deadline, next one is April 1st) I plan to start a blog (post?) about this historically valid reinterpretation of Donald McKay's Clippers. He remains our most famous, yet greatly misunderstood Clipper designer.

im realising now that  looks like i will be soon making lower masts trees ( my god - and than i can start studying rigging bowsprit and lower standing rigging and start gathering resources for it  ! ouch.

Vladimir, thanks for the compliment, I appreciate it. Without exaggeration, the many, many very impressive, yet frustratingly inaccurate models of Donald McKay's beautiful Clippers have been a constant "thorn in my side." I guess you can say I'm a "man on a mission" to finally set the record straight. That's a big part of my added motivation to finally recreate a clear picture of the real "GLORY of the SEAS". I really consider her the "Rosetta Stone" key to unlocking the genuine looks of McKay's Clippers.

When I have a chance, I'll have to look at Chuck's Wincheslea build.

Worth checking prototype. Its lovely typical 18 century british war frigate with all  ooomph of éra gilding and decoration in 1:48 . design and execution of prototype IS créme de LA créme. Top of any štandard. Top materials, boxwood etc. Laser cut  and cnc cut figurehead etc...

But what masters 18 century craftsmans were AS they Made IT as admirality models -  now in Greenwich maritime muse  by hands with samé quality. Its Beyond understanding ..Building her give me joy two times a year....:)

Vladimir, wow! You've done a very nice treatise on constructing very intricate mast tops from beginning sketch to completed product. Very impressive! I especially appreciated your demonstration of utilizing a cardboard former with push pins to gracefully bend that former piece.

Great work Vlad……just wonderful.  I like the metal edging and detail of the slats.   But you are making the same mistake I originally did.  The opening for the shrouds is the full length of the top. From the forward trim to the aft timber.  The full length of the hounds timber.

Here is a photo of the actual design.   Sorry, not to be a Debby Downer,  but accuracy is accuracy.   Other than that….beautiful work.

Thank you for fine comments . Rob its perfectly fine and apropriate. I was expecting more accurate pics etcetera. Looking at pics, few things strikes me. are those wooden masts ? etc...do you know the vessel and time? oh its glory from the late era right? i recognize cut jib boom from another photo...observing top, even round halfcircle is broken and futtocks area is not suported at all only with two thin strikes beneath not connected to overall structure. are you sure all elements are wooden ? because if not and if iron involved, this design makes sense. otherwise it wouldnt  be fair to make it wooden   - as it would be probably way too fragile structure.? maybe floor of that top can be ironplate  as well..i dunno. just curious :)

but its easier to model it so...:)

This is Glory as she sat prior to her being sold to be burned for the metal in her hull.  Several other images show the same open construction.  The main mast is a  replacement mast from her original and her main mast is a built mast.  It is unclear if the design for her tops changed when she received her new masts.  But it is clear from this image that her tops were not as bulky and did indeed lack the central cross timber aft of her main mast doubling.

I wasn't implying that you change anything...but simply pointing out the actual top of Glory at her later years.  Artistic license at this point is the guide of the day.

Great work by the way.
