Wasa 1628 by JanV - Corel - scale 1:75 - Vasa

Recommended Posts

Hi Wim,

this handrail is something I want to do in the future, but at this time no preparations are made for that. I will first findout if other Wasa builders made this also in scale 1:75 and discuss with them about their experience.

Jan,

Hi, Ive been away and just starting to catch up. Nice updates. I really like your galleries. Those layered timbers make a huge difference. Your mast bracing plates (channels) are going to be perfect. You really captured the edge curves. No nice to have photos as a guide (:-) I also really like your hull and deck planking. Looks so good.

I'm happy to be back home and following my favorite builds Cheers.

Jan,

In your Dutch build log you asked for feedback on why your bow roster was too high. As far as I could see on your pictures, it seems that you have attached the outer parts of the bow sections somewhat too high. I compared your bow section against mine (the level of my roster is somewhat below the hull level) and the curve of the outer parts ends somewhat lower in my build than in yours. At the time when I attached them, I checked with the brass figures how high these bow parts should be.

Hope this helps..

Currently building: Wasa from Corel (1/75)

Future: Titanic (Mantua), Batavia (Kolderstok), Friesland (Mamoli), Bismarck (Hachette), Prins Willem (Corel)

Hi Andre,

This point reminds me an hint I received from another Wasa builder to setup each item without glueing and check for further stages.

I made this mistake and cannot correct all items anymore.

But before fixing the outer parts I used the brass figures for the correct location, I will verify these again.

another problem is that I made some modifications without checking the consequences to later stages, like the canon openings.

I have started to redo the bow section as there were some failures

first the problem was that the planking in the bow section was not correct and second the doors were not correct

after thinking this issue during my holiday in the sun with over 30 degrees I decided to remove the wrong parts and start again

as the weather forecast for tomorrow is extreme high temperature (35 degrees) I might continue with an extra fan in my workshop.

Jan,

Nice update, again I love the "old look" of your build.

So you are also rebuilding areas that are not correct. Time consuming for sure, but after the fixes you will be much happier. They are worth the time and effort. If only we had known about these errors with the kits Before we started our builds (:-) Now that we have become "obsessed" its hard to move forward without first repairing the mistakes. Your bow doors will look much better. Too late for my incorrect doors.

Regards as always, Michael

Jan,

I know that I have said this twice, but I so love the old look that you have so perfectly captured with your Vasa. This last photo is perfect. Are you thinking of  aging the wooden decorative pieces as well? I notice that your weather deck canon decorative pieces are "fresh" looking.

PS: Your galleries are so beautiful !!

I am still thinking about how to finish the wood. My first idea is to paint the wood partly in dark red like the 1:10 model in the Museum

all decorations are already partly painted with matt paint (Humbroll)

the old look you are refering to is done by using only wallnut wood. I replaced all other wood, specially the plywood parts

at this time I did not use any paint or varnish to the wood

the canons are directly out of the box as delivered by Corel, so no modifications or paint is done, I expect these deck items to be completed once the autumn has started.

the galleries are a free impression based on your start. :)

Nice going JanV. I'm following this build with interest. I specially want to see you paint job finished.

About a comment above about "aging", remember Vasa sailed only one mile and a half. She did not have time to "age" at all.

There aren't but two options: do it FAST, or do it RIGHT.

Current Project Build Log: Soleil Royal in 1/72. Kit by Artesania Latina.

Last finished projectsRoyal Ship Vasa 1628; French Vessel Royal Louis 1780. 1/90 Scale by Mamoli. 120 Cannons

Future projects already in my stash: Panart: San Felipe 1/75; OcCre: Santísima Trinidad 1/90;

Wish List: 1/64 Amati Victory, HMS Enterprise in 1/48 by CAF models.

So much to build, so little time!
