Golden Hind by JimO - 1/35 scale - based on Airfix 1/72 scale with modifications

Size comparison of the Golden Hinde in 1/35 scale to my 1/350 USS Enterprise by Tamiya, the 1/350 Bismark by Tamiya, the 1/427 USSArizona by Revell, 1/35 Sd Kfz 254 Armoured Car by Hoby Boss and in the back window my 1/35 scale Leopold 283 mm Krupp K5 rail gun by Trumpeter.

          Would love to get the much larger 1/72 scale Dora Krupp 800mm rail gun by Hobby Boss but the size which even at 1/72 scale is larger than the 1/35 Leopold and hard to find a spot in my room and the cost $$$$$.

     My army unit during WW II (29th Armoured Regiment- The South Alberta Regiment) captured it in Essen Germany.  I could donate it to the military museum I established but the now current curator is not what I would call a sufficent curator, as it is, he gave away the 1/72 scale diorama of a Tank landing craft unloading Priest SPGs with porpoise ammo sleds and FOO tanks on Juno beach during D-Day of the 22nd Field Battery ( another unit we perpetuated). The guy apparently doesn’t equate it with the SAR,  who landed after D-Day +35 as a worthy unit to display in our museum. To say the least I was perturbed not just because I used my own funds to buy and build it  but because I also co-authored our Regimental history book. Grrrr.

Wish I still had pictures of the Landing Craft Tank D-Day diorama that I did handy, may have on some disk on file. It was a 1/76/72 scale Milcast model ( now looks like out of stock) resin. It was a nice model to build. Pictures shows model from Milcast and pictures of them on D-Day.  The 22nd field battery of the 13the Field Regt fired the first rounds of the landing on Juno while still in the landing craft prior to landing.  The 13th would later gave up their Priest SPGs much to their dismay sortly after D-Day and re-converted back to towed 25 pounders. The SPGs would be then converted to the Troop carriers  known as Kangaroos. The 13th RCA had their own cartoonist for their unit newspaper ( sorta like the stars and stripes of the U S).

 

     For any Star Trek fans out there the actor who played Scotty, James Doohan was a member of the Canadian 13th Field Artillery Regiment which my unit perpetuates. Posted is an excert from our Regimental History book.

 He was wounded on D-Day+ and took wounds to his body by his own troops and lost a couple fingers which he hide during his actng years, but you can see in his hand prints in cement in Hollywood.😁 After his medical treatment he got his pilots licence and flew as forward artillery spotter for his unit. Guess he thought it was safer in the air than on the ground from his own soldiers.

  Another alternative for armament configuration is that shown in the depiction below (and a likely accurate one at that), with 6 guns on the lower deck (per side) and one on the deck above astern of the main shrouds - making for a broadside of 7.   the higher gun would have extra range, and I've seen (but can't lay hold of right now) two French galleons having 5 guns on the gun deck (per side) and 2 on the deck above (a protected extension of the weather deck).   So there are several plausible ways to go, at your discretion, any of which may be valid. 

   An alternative to a pair of guns close to the bow (on the gun deck) would be two of lesser caliber (thus somewhat lighter) located on the forecastle deck (although the space is somewhat limited there), thus still 'at the bow'  (bow chasers?).  The lighter gun mounts could be angled at will to the side, at a more forward angle, or even ahead if the bowsprit sail was raised (or the yard for it positioned further down on the bowsprit.  A lower position of that yard seems preferable anyway, so that the the helmsman manning the whip-staff in his shelter under the small poop deck would have a forward view that cleared the yard on the bowsprit.  Once again, there are a number of permutations of options that can fit the period information know.

        Out of town for weekend. Decided to go without gallery and 7 guns other than stern guns with small guns on side in the forecastle for bow guns. 
        Have seen pictures of the forecastle mast forward of the forcastle as in the airfix model but a lot of pictures of the mast located up top of the deck. I think the mast forward is the more accurated but hard to decide based on some scale drawings on line. Any thoughts?

Most drawings of that era show the fore mast in front of the fore castle

      Yes I see that thanks. I will be going with mast in front of forecastle. On a question of ship hull planking and decking how wide, length and thickness are your wood strips? I found a source for birch strips that are 5 or 6mm wide and 5-7.5” long.

My brother-in-law fishes in his spare time.
I told him I caught a really big fat fish. But the hole in the ice was too small to pull it up...
He didn't believe me.

PLANKING scale 1:1
The planks are of sawn oak; their lengths vary between 2m and 6m. The average plank width is 300–460mm;

thickness varies between 50 and 70mm.

I used this data from an English wreck for the dimensions of the planks.

Plywood ribs cut and temporary placed on keel with spacers but need to smooth them out. Need to make a desk clamp to hold level..

Made two cradles, one for my ship, and one for my power drill to act as a disk sander. The red spots on the ship ribs is not paint.

Some good news. Postal strike is over so I should be getting my Soleil Royal that I had ordered back in October and held up in transit. It will have to wait on that build as I have no room to build two large ships at once. Today I sanded the ribs to the GH and cut out the middle to again dry fit on keel. Sander worked well.

Le Soleil Royal has arrived after a little more than two months, but I must now store it until my scratch build Golden Hinde is done 😥.  The SR at 1/100 scale and the GH at 1/35 scale are the same size so no room to do both at the same time. So far looking at the SR it will be an interesting build and helpful at the same time in the GH build as far as info. My furry friend thinks otherwise😜.

I wanted to build a larger scale aircraft carrier because the aircraft would have been bigger and more detaled but that kit was more expensive. I have been eyeballing the larger USS Hornet though.LOL. Same with the Bizmark. But they would have taken up more room as it is these two GH and SR will fill the void. I did not know of this site when I built them so ya no log.  The 1/72 scale landing craft that I built for my museum display was also a great build which I added the Arty OP tanks, Priests with the porpoises, and universal carriers with wading equipment on all of them plus crew was a very pleasent build, It was a resin kit by Milcast. I noticed their no longer producing them or are out of stock. They also made a 1/35 scale as well but same story on supply. I wish I had pictures of it to show (may have some on file somewhere). Still deeply annoyed  that that guy gave it away, It was  $$$.

The large scale Yamamoto wuld be nice to buld.

 

Thanks Baker as well. I will be adding more ribs as the build continues. Meanwhile as I wait till tomorrow to get a new blade belt  decided to make a start on 4 anchors. Small one is the 1/72 scale.

 

Question: the cannon and trucks of the GH, that would the size be in 1/35 scale of the various types used?

The 1/72 scale trucks  were 7.0 mm wide minus wheels X 18.3 mm length  X 5.9 mm high and the cannon are 31 mm wide by 32.5 mm length ( the upper deck guns “weather deck”?)  

Will also be adding swivel guns.  The trucks also look like they varyfrom 4 wheels to 2.
