Hi everyone! My name is Ellie and I'm excited to give my first project a go. I grew up in the Midwest, moved around the US a bit, and landed in Baltimore a few years ago. I've loved living by the water and took a few sailing lessons when I was new to the city. Sailboats are stunning and I would love to capture a piece of their beauty for my home.

I started a beginner's kit (Endeavour by Amati 1:80) before I knew this site existed. I'm so glad I found this community! As a complete novice I'm excited to learn from others while I continue the kit.

This is my first time building a model anything, but I've always gravitated toward tasks that need detail orientation and patience. We'll see how it goes! So far I've been enjoying myself.

Thanks for having me and I'm looking forward to building with you all :)

I'm building the very same kit right now. If you have any questions about it I'll try to help. It's a fun kit. It's the Amati Endeavour J class? Plank on bulkhead? Or plastic hull?

I'll be looking for your build log

Welcome Ellie

Enjoy It and when it is finished look back at the pride of the accomplishment and the joy the build gave you without asking anything in return. Those feelings will never go away and with each successive build will only increase. Watch out because it’s like a drug and can be addicting.    There is a wealth of knowledge here all you need to do is ask.

View Terrys Endeavour Log it will get your blood going.
Best Rick

Hi again Ellie

I went to Dental School at the University of Maryland in downtown Baltimore. It’s a wonderful and beautiful ethnic city. I did a residency at Hopkins and Baltimore City Hospital back in the 70’s.
You are very lucky because when your skills develop you can build Model Shipways Pride Of Baltimore and tour it as you build it. I have it and it’s on my list of builds if I live long enough. As you notice I am definitely ADDICTED.
All the Best Rick (now under the alias

Admiral Rick)

Thank you all so much!

@TerryPat - I will definitely follow your build log. I took a peek and can already tell it's going to be helpful. I'm on my first planking right now and will be looking at how you approached it! I'll post updates and photos in a build log when I get the chance to create one. Thank you for reaching out :)

@RVB I love Pride of Baltimore! I used to do sunrise runs around the Baltimore harbor, and running past that ship was always one of my favorite parts of the run. I didn't even consider there would be kits out there for it. Amazing. Very cool you used to live in the city!

The bow and stern blocks they supply are a real pain to sand. If you use them, a regular metal file works well . But.. you're already planking so you must have dealt with it.

Terry, I did deal with it and it was not fun. Haha

Terry and Ellie  arbor bands on a mandrel and a rotary dremel is a must have for for all quick shaping down to close tolerances. It takes hours off your work. When you are real close just finish with minimal hand sanding. Also great for making the rabbet before attaching the keel.

See below what you can get done in about a minute.
As always best Rick (The admiral)
