Ray got a reaction from drtrap in HMS Diana 1794 by Ray - FINISHED - Caldercraft - A 38 gun Heavy Frigate
Hammock rails and netting
The hammock rails were added, and .5mm thread threaded through the holes, the netting I used on my Pegasus build looked to small and fine, I did have some other netting that I had from the Pegasus build, the problem being it was red, but looked a better size, so I painted it mat black and it came out ok, so I decided to use it. My method for fixing the netting, is to line up the netting to the top edge and sew it to the rail thread as it the photos, then tie the netting into the bottom corners of the cranes, and then trim to to hight of the other crane upright and sew as the first side, and then just trim up and tie in any bits that need it, and final touch up the paint.
The hull is now completed with just a few touch ups required I will take some photos and add them soon.

Your Diana is a superb built model Ray,
I enjoy those pics every time I look into your build log. Also although Long completed already, I like to look up your HMS Pegasus, which I also find an inspiring and very well done model in all Details...

The bow grating and decoration are proceding very slowly. I found the middle headrails very frustrating.
The first few photos show the completion of the hawse hole and grating. For those who have not reached this stage, before final fitting make sure you trim and prepare the supports for the gratings so that the decorative trim for the middle and lower headrails is flush with the top of the notches provided. You will need to put wallnut strip over them later - which I suspect will be very difficult indeed - particularly for the front support. My solution is shown later.
Preparation for fitting the top head rails. I got a bit carried away with sanding, but a bit of touch-up paint has already disguised it.
Here are the headrails dry-fitted. A bit of touching up needs to be done.
This is where things turned nasty. It took hours to get the middle headrails fitted and symmetric. I had not anticipated the need to adjust the notches to receive them. Doing it on the model was rather fraught. As well, to enable the wallnut strip to cover the grating supports I found it necessary to file the decorative strip. The last photo shows this. Even with this it's going to be difficult. The decoration here looks a bit messy but looks fine on the model.

Next job has been making up the remainder of the fore deck fittings. Firstly the belfry to which I fitted a non kit brass bell, the bitts, and gratings, plus the stove chimney with added smoke deflector and hinges, and lastly the breast beam rails.

The last of the ships guns have now been added and fully rigged with the carriage guns set in the most forward bow chaser position, as can be seen the new captain has arrived and is overseeing the fitting out.
I did order walnut dowel to replace the birch dowel in the kit except the 10mm dowel which will be painted and is not warped, it came today and it is of much better quality plus some .25mm black thread for the ratlines all from Cornwall model boats who are also very quick to send out any orders.

The Diana figure head has now been painted and in place but not permently fixed, and the fore deck guns have had the rigging started.
The bow pin rail has also been added although this was remade as the one with the kit could not have the holes opened out to allow the pins to fit.

Second Planking
I started planking from the top of the wale, this position was marked out as per the instructions measuring down from the main deck gun ports. I like to lay the second planks semi-wet to damp and fix with cyno gel; I find the cyno grabs damp timber much better than dry timber. One thing I will comment on is the quality of the planking the 1x4mm being the worst, it is nowhere as good as the planking supplied in the two Victory kits I have built, the edges are rough and splintery, and also show saw marks, four out of ten would be my best mark I could give the 1x5mm a little better, So before soaking I had to sand all the planking edges a bit of a pain. I went downwards with the 1x5mm for five rows,( the instruction say plank right down to the keel and plank upward last), I then went upwards with the 1x4mm only because I thought it was only a matter of time while working on the bottom I would break or damage the fore or quarter deck sides, this way their thickness would be doubled and be a lot less fragile. The planking as gone ok so far.

At the end I have posted two pics with Diana along side Pegasus hope this gives you the size compassion.

I pined the top deck in place next which showed up one problem, one frame13 is to high or rather the deck beam part is, which puts a hump on the line the top plank would take, I could have removed the deck and dressed down the beam but I thought all the pin holes would be not as tight when the deck was refitted so I decided to leave it for now and just make sure the top plank runs at the correct height.
The next job was to balsa fill between the first few bow frames and the last stern ones and sand down. I then trimmed the top deck so that it did not protrude past the outer edge of the frames ready to start planking.
Inbetween thefirst few frames have been filled with balsa and sanned down
