Ray got a reaction from muratx in HMS Diana 1794 by Ray - FINISHED - Caldercraft - A 38 gun Heavy Frigate
The Rudder
Now the hull coppering is complete the only plating left to do is copper plate the rudder, but before that it needed sanding down, tapering it to about 3mm.
Coppering the rudder was probably the most fiddly part of all the coppering. When done the pintails were glued into position on the rudder I glued both parts on and then marked where they came on the keel post and then drilled it, then I added the straps to the rudder and cyano fix the rudder to the post and added the other straps to the hull, and to finish off painted the straps with copper paint.

First few plates on
A few more plates added
Plated and ready to fit
Rudder completed

Copper plating complete the second side has now been finished, only the rudder to do, to complete all the plating to sum up the plates went on very well were easy to cut dress to fit, there was loads left over, glad its completed and it was a good move to break it up by building the galleries at the same time.
I have also remove the protective tape of the gun deck.
2nd side well under way

The galleries have now been completed there is one more bit to add on the top but that will be done when the quarterdeck rails have been added, no real problems adding the trim and decoration and the photos show the stages, now back to the plating only a few more rows on the second side to go.
Decoration going on one side
That side done

Ray reacted to Blue Ensign in gun carrige colour
This question pops up from time to time, I think I answered a similar question not so long ago, but I can't recall where now, possibly lost in build log.
This is what LG Carr-Laughton has to say in his book Old Ships Figureheads and Sterns.
Red was from very early the regulation colour for inboard works, but during the French Revolutionary war it began to give way to yellow; and indeed other colours seemed to have been used ocasionally, for in the Thalia frigate in 1797 they painted the Quarterdeck and Foc'sle blue.
It appears that in 1801, red being still the regulation colour both for the sides inboard and for gun carriages, the crews of ships were in the habit of repainting the gun carriages yellow when they received them from the officers of the Ordnance; and this implies that the inboard works were also yellow, of which there is other evidence.
In August 1807, the Navy Board instructed the dockyard officers to paint the decks (by which it is meant the sides and the deck fittings, not the flat of the decks) yellow when requested to do so by Captains. Light yellow was usually chosen.
It is likely that both at the Nile and Trafalgar most ships were yellow inboard, tho' probably a steadily decreasing number still kept to the old red.
This looks like a case of Navy board Regulation catching up with accepted practice.
Diana had a fairly long career so probably had both red and yellow inboard works, tho' I hasten to add not at the same time, that would look appalling and not at all in keeping with Georgian aesthetics.

Coppering tile plate applying guide
Copper plating seems to scare some builders so here is the way I actually fix the plates/tiles to the hull THICK cyno is always used and I very rarely find the need to remove any excess, and if I do I use a wet/baby wipe. Cutting is done with a heavy duty Stanley type knife on a self-healing cutting mat, and any extra dressing to fit carried out with a sanding disc or needle file.
1st thick cyno going onto tiles max I do at one time is three
spreading glue on plates
Triming at plate
Fixing tiles/plates standerd fix and a cut in fix
Fixed ordinary and cut in tiles plates

Thanks for the input. I'm working on a balsa retrofit between the bow and stern bulkheads at the moment so another update to follow....

Ray,
You're doing an excellent job. I have peeked-in to your build log from time-to-time. I completed my Diana last year and it was a superb kit - very challenging, but also very rewarding. You may have seen my completed Diana in the gallery. If not, just search on Diana in the site's engine and you will see 10 photos I posted.
Although one can follow the masting/rigging plans from Caldercraft, I'd recommend studying Vol 4 of The David Antscherl book from Seawatch Books (Swan class build). This helped me immensely to create more accurate masts, spars and - of course, extensive rigging as well as belaying plans. You may want to look into this BEFORE you complete the weather deck furniture and rail details.
A fully-rigged Diana is a most impressive model. Steady-on, keep it shipshape and in Bristol fashion! She'll reward you.

Very nice tiling job. Are you going to keep it clean or let it age?
The stern decorations look great too!
