For my two cents worth i can hardly add much to Adelines' response as she hit most of the points that I would bring up. Aesthetics are key to the builder and I for one am building for my pleasure first and for accuracy second. I am not that experienced a builder to think 'museum quality' so I can be flexible about being true to the original.
There is a saying here on MSW... your ship, your decisions. For most this is a hobby to enjoy with color schemes and various kit/scratch build alterations (bashing) left to the shipwright.

I knew it was small, I mean, you said so yourself, it was small, at a 1:500 scale, a size at which i can't really wrap my mind around ..... until....
until the picture with the pencil. Ummm... wow! Just plain wow... I think I'd be working on the bottle too at this stage

Very, very incredibly amazingly good! Hats off!

Wood glue (titebond) can also be wiped with a damp, not soaking, paper towel or rag. Especially when sanding will follow the slight raise of grain from the dampness is negligible at best.
I have never tried the dental probe approach but that makes good sense too.

I really do like wood glue more than the CA for most applications. I once did furniture/cabinetmaking and wood glue was used 99.99% of the time with a CA glue, Hotshot by brand, we used for that rare moment of needing it fast. Plus I think titebond creates a stronger bond than CA due to absorption into the wood fibers.

    Both have their place tho.

Thanks for the subject Larry as glue is a huge part of the process and is not really discussed much that I could find.

I use toothpicks and super cheap paintbrushes that I found from Hobby Lobby (30 for $2) to spread the glue and I like the forked needle approach with the CA as I tend to wear too much of it when I use it.
Wax paper is an essential for both wood glue and CA.

I am just at the point of planking my first model and was wondering whether most use CA or wood glue. For me, CA is great for the quick attachment of some items but the open time to readjust is non-existent. I don't get good results under those circumstances so I suppose wood glue and downtime for drying will be my choice. Rather that than butcher the assembly with CA on everything including me.

I concur with Rich, sapele is a unforgiving bender although a good soak and heat will do it as long as the curve is not too extreme. Sapele is a form of mahogany and the grain is somewhat coarse and prone to snap suddenly. It's always a downer to be at the last tiny bit and about to breathe a sigh of relief for a great bend when a unsatisfying snap occurs.
The walnuts from the kit looks darker and more evenly grained than the black walnut and that stuff should smoothly bend if needed… again with moisture and heat. Walnut also finishes so nice.
Cherry is a fun wood too and the more the heartwood is exposed to light the darker it gets until it has a nice rich natural brown. Natural cherry is gorgeous when aged and clear coated.

But at this point it doesn't  matter what you do with it cause it's always a necessity and a pleasure to have excess wood… always.

Well hello Hexnut. I'm late to this party and must say.... you are an artist! I find it fascinating that on your intro you talk of 'shyness' for lack of a better word regarding a build log. You shouldn't have worried so... I think we can all learn from your attention to the details. Impressive.
And so was the swift on the DSoTM on TMC's page... cool creative!

    Hi David,

I've never made a solid hul before and honestly had no idea about how much prep it requires to make sure the blank is as it should be. Requires a discerning eye and good calipers it seems.

Huge improvement over the metal one in the kit. Good job! I think I might also do a wooden version.

One of the details I wanted to add was a grapnel anchor..
The main problem was how to manufacture these..

An idea came up in my head using a 1,5 mm brass tube and 5 pcs. of 0,4mm wire and I started working on it.
Underneath again a visual sequence of the idea.

Even though the result is not bad, especially after blackening, I wasn't satisfied with the “hooks” and the wire i used, .."peanuts" maybe.., but anyway, I started on version 2.
This time i used a 2mm brass tube and a slightly thicker (0,5 mm) brass wire and also a different hook type.
And by using 2 mm brass tube, I could shape the shaft a bit more, but.., unfortunately it could only contain 4 wires..

It’s still not perfect, but I leave it for now…

This is the final result after some fine-tuning, blackening and a cable attached.

Not an original idea, it's the way Bob Hunt solved the same problem.  I had sort of test fitted the rails much earlier in the build and thought they were ok and I wouldn't need to do that, but it turned out I was wrong.

well it has been a very tiring week , with last Monday turning into a 20 hour work day (till 3:30 am).due to a virus attack

but I did get a fair bit done today

I have begun attaching the strakes. the cheap masking tape came in handy again to keep them in place

in the second picture you see that I still have to finish the hulls painting, but I am going to leave that until I have finished the strakes and some other stuff. then I will mount her on the pedestals and use some styrofoam to protect the hull.

I have also worked on the edges of the top fore and aft deck. there are a few inconsistencies in the pictures on how to do them but I think I got it sorted out. also some of the preformed edges are too long and have the wrong angles

Started the tree nails this last week - first to the Stern.
I have been dreading doing this - so many to do.

I wanted to minimise the clean up of excess glue about the holes, so I force the epoxy into the holes first, clean the surface up then plug the holes with toothpicks. After snipping the toothpick near the base with clippers, I then use a scalpel blade to cut flush to the plank. A slight sand and pretty much done.

I am not worried that the tree nails are light coloured for now. Probably darken when I apply clear finish to the hull.
