ChrisLBren got a reaction from mort stoll in HMS Speedy by Vane - Vanguard Models - Scale 1:64 - Master Shipwright (limited edition)
The deck is a focal point on any ship model - its one of my favorite areas to build - to me a laser etched deck doesn't look right

Port layout and upper/lower cill framing complete, no issues were encountered with this process, and I have begun installing the port sides.
Next up will be adding the stern framing and I’m also cooking up something special to add to this model which will change the original design somewhat but hopefully it will add to the whole.

Thanks guys.....finished the carvings today. All that is left to do now is the fluted columns between the windows and the last two carvings. Hopefully get to that next week. That will finish up chapter 3.
Then I have to make all this stuff for you guys which might take a while including writing that 3rd chapter.
Thanks again Jack!!! This wouldnt be possible without you!!! Fantastic work!!!

By the way, I did tear off the rear Planks below the Wales. If not, I would alway regret to not having done it. Now the Joints are like stairs in a regular pattern.

I've now completed the upper planking of the second (starboard) side. It has been sanded and a coat of Wipe-on Poly applied. As could be expected, it went on easier and better than the first side. I still had to make small adjustments to get the plank widths right, particularly in the area of the hances.
Following Chuck's sequence, the next work will be the drop plank and the first two strakes below the wales.

Hi
So I'm going to go ahead and start a build log of the Winchelsea, It will based off Chuck's designs with a few modifications of my own.
My main reason for building her is because she was once captained by Pellew and I intend in the future to build another of his ships,
a 1:48 fully framed model of the 44 gun Razee Indefatigable and it would be great to have both models together in the same scale.
I will not be planking in AYC as I have a goodly stock of Castello Boxwood and prefer it on a model of this size, also stem/stern framing
and keel will be of Swiss Pear with other wood highlights, maybe I will use the cedar on things that wont be seen easily and use the fruitwood
gel stain that Chuck has discovered to blend it with the boxwood to minimize usage.
I did purchase the Bulkheads and starter packages from Chuck and will certainly be buying his cast resin set when they are available.
The first job I have started while waiting for planking to dry on Pegasus is to make a new build board for this "BIG" ship, it will be approx
38" long without rigging and will need good support while framing, planking and finishing, so I decided to go and buy another 'cheap'
5foot workbench from Harbor Freight for $100 and modify it to suit. First it was put together and lift casters added so that I can quickly move
and spin the bench whichever way I need it. Second was to add 4-foot T-tracks and a nice large 1/2" MDF buildboad to the top. Third was to
install the keel and bulkhead former holders ready for the backbone. The 4 drawers are great for holding parts/tools and the bottom shelf for
materials which keeps an entire build together on one table instead of being spread about my workshop.
Here is looking forward to an interesting build and I should start on the bulkheads later this week.

Beautiful result ! I agree with Chuck - having worked with Ebony and Fiebings dye (on my Confederacy which is fading) on wales - I’m just going to paint them

I junked my fair a frame after about one half hour. The HobbyZone Slip is a good piece of kit.

Happy New Years to you Chuck and everyone else too!
I completed the bollard timbers a while back. While doing the counter and wales I constantly flip
the hull upside-down, spin it around and just manipulate it a lot. So to be safe I tucked them away
and kept them off until the last possible moment. If all goes well I'll be putting them on later today.
I'm also re-doing the forward most gun port opening to be more inline with the plans.

Frankly I think using a Oil paint Sepia wash would probably do the same thing from my experience dabbling in Oil Painting.

Looks really good Chuck - still thinking about an approach for us building in Pear/Cherry. Maybe just going with Boxwood colored for the rails and sculptures will look good. It does tie in well with the frieze. Usually I only like three tones in a project - on this one there could be black wales, red bulwarks, pear planking, boxwood sculptures/rails and blue frieze. Or dye all of the boxwood down using your recommended gel stain - Ill have to experiment.
This ship is looking amazing - kudos - Im also thinking of rigging her. Ive got the space !!!!

For those building in Cherry or pear.....
Here is what they will look like with a coat of OLD MASTERS fruitwood gel stain.
I STRONGLY recommend that whether you are building in Yellow Cedar, Cherry or pear, that you apply a coat of this gel stain with a brush. Leave it sit for a minute or two. Then buff it off with another soft but clean brush or soft lint free cloth. It really does the trick and creates the finish you want. Below shown against some scrap Pear I had and left on a bit longer to get less contrast.

Last night and today I worked on the stern frames, that was a little tricky, I stared at it a lot and constantly was making adjustments in fear of getting something a little off. I think it turned out ok though. Lots more sanding tomorrow and hopefully onto the quarter galley framing.
Im not quite certain of the lower sills on the transom, I installed them perpendicular to the frame where they sit, should they be more towards horizontal?
