SawdustDave reacted to Chuck Seiler in Gunboat PHILADELPHIA 1776 by Chuck Seiler - Scale 1:48 - from Model Shipways plans
    Later that same night......

I thought I would post these, but later decided not to because I would have more up to date pics.  <not>  The build goes on at a fast pace, but the photgrapher appears to be on vacation.  I hope to have some pictures later today
if, for nothng else, to keep me off page 4.

What started as a simple build has become quite cluttered.  Alot of knots and alot of rope coils (non perfect version).  While I am pressed for time, I need to remember to let the glue dry before moving on.

Critical at this point isto remember to perspective of the rig.  How would that block be rigged and how would that belaying pin be tied off by people ON the ship, not what is easy for a modeler OUTSIDE the ship.  Thankfully I have a good supply of tweezers, forceps and mini alligator clamps.   Film at 11.

I flew some Sailors in to square away the lubberly rigging.  Here is where I am as of now.

The swabbies thought the ladder rungs, in lieu of ratlines, were cute, so they left them on.  Once I get the starboard gun installed, the rigging will go very fast.  Once that is done, the forward railings and awning structure...as well as cats and dogs like anchors, rope coils, sweeps, etc.

I had taken several pics during our Guild meeting Wednesday, but all except this ended up being out of focus.  More pics this weekend...if I can see thru the smoke and ash.

Or, spending thirty minutes shaping a tiny part, holding with tweezers.....it pops out and goes flying off across your table somewhere. Now you're moving stuff all around, down on your knees, sweeping the floor...got to find that part! One piece , after searching all over, finally gave up...my wife found it two days later in the cuff of my trousers.

My clumsy thumbs have forced me to invent a way to hold tiny parts while I work on them without them slipping and sliding all over my workbench. I just took some masking tape and laid it face UP, then I scotch taped the tape on a small board for easy rotation. When I lay the tiny part on the tape...it stays put! Yet it's very easily removed with no trace of sticky stuff.

More advances: opening of the gunports, painting and lacquered the hull. The colors were chosen by the admiral in person  and she was painted with acrylic paint
    - Naples Yellow from "Pebeo"
    - Smoke Black from "Vallejo"
    Cheers

Now working on top mast shrouds using 3.5mm dead eyes....
Thought I might share this handy seizing jig for anyone interested.
Took me about 15 minutes to create this simple jig, using two wire stubs to secure the tiny deadeye on one upright and the second upright with a map pin used as belaying point to secure the two ends of the shroud nice and taunt whilst being perfectly seized.

Today , Was a day of many Hats, I started by masking the deck and then spaying 3 coats of Flat white ( I did not want the glare from the gloss ) I then trimmed the cockpit Coamings, sanded them, and Stained them Cherry . Then I Started making the Pintles and Gudgeons , This is the first time that I have made metal parts ( I learned how to make them here on M.S.W. ) The Coamings have not been glued in. Here are the results

SawdustDave reacted to mtaylor in Licorne 1755 by mtaylor - 3/16" scale - French Frigate - from Hahn plans - Version 2.0 - TERMINATED
    Here's the seemingly mandatory history:

This ship caught my attention the first time I saw the plans because it had a white flag. Laughed a bit until I researched it. But then the lines caught my eye. She's a 32 gun, frigate of the 8 pound gun class.

A bit of history... built 1755 in Brest. Not too much in the way of history available except for some highlights:

1756 - Carried troops to Quebec.

1757 - with Marsaint's divsion on the 21 Oct. A "most bloody conflict" with the British off Santo Domingo. No ships lost on either side, but a high casualty count.

1762 - expeditions against British shipping and the Sale pirates.

1778 - she was part of a small fleet in company with Le Belle Poule, Hirondelle and Le Coureur. They ran into Keppel's squadron. Licorne as surrounded and captured. La Belle Poule had a famous two-hour duel with the British and escaped to a nearby bay.

For the next five years it was known as HMS Licorne  in the British Navy.

1783 - Sold out of the service.

From the plans, it appears to be a good beginner scratchbuild. Clean lines, minimal carving. Some things from the Hahn plans needs changing such as the mast caps and the cannon rigging. I'm still researching via Boudriot and Frolich.

I'm planning on completely planking her, but that may change.

This is really nice work. As for the bell, if you had not said otherwise, I would think it was an actual bell. Nice work.

This is exactly what I was afraid of.  The 5/32 scale (1:77) simply will not allow me the detail I feel like I should be looking at.
Just finished installing the shrouds to the fore mast top..... used 3.5mm dead eyes and the scale doesn't work to my eye.

Been wrestling with this from the beginning....now, as much as I hate it, I know what I must do.
