    Thanks to all for stopping in. the likes and comments all  are much appreciated. While not a lot got done this past while there is a little to report;

Drilling out pin rails, actually just slightly enlarging the existing holes using sensitive drilling attachment on Sherline mill

    Pin rails installed

    Starting to strop the deadeyes

Drilling holes for deadeyes, all measurements taken from plans

Cutting chain plates from photo etch sheet

Although I cleaned and prepped the chain plates for blackening in the end i went for painting instead. They were first primed with metal primer then painted with acrylic paint, there are no severe bends on these so paint cracking should not be an issue. The black ring is for the rudder opening on the bottom of the transom.

Rudder hole is up next so I thought making the rudder would be a good idea

    The completed rudder

And how he looks now. Belaying pins are installed just for the picture they are not glued in place.
     Thanks for stopping in.

Hi Antony .... I was off the forum several days, sorry not to answering You, but here is the explanation about the Upgraded project and Retro project :

... We noticed a problem connected with the price and quality of our kits as well as the different skills between the modellers who are building them ... We were thinking for a while, observing different combinations and after a year we get to the solution : We decided to make two different equipped kits for each model... We decided to make new versions of the MarisStella kits, to make the better plans, to add more materials, photo etched sheets, resin figureheads (to some of them) and after all to make much better instruction booklets (taking a look at their thickness, I would call them 'books'). After all we get a note from some shops that the boxes are not attractive enough, so we fixed this problem as well... The new versions have the great plasticized shining boxes with high resolution large photographs onto them... Of course, these new kits were with the higher production price ! How to fix this !!? We left the old projects with the simplified boxes and with old quantities of materials, with no figure heads and with no photo etched sheets. The booklets are new, but with no so many pages... So this is named RETRO PROJECT ... The new kits, that were upgraded are named UPGRADED PROJECT ... Definitely, You need more skills to build Retro projects , as You noted studding different build logs here on MSW ... Upgraded projects have more parts and more illustrations and photographs.... Both of kit versions has, most of them, well written instructions in English, thanks to great champ Robinson that I would like to greet here ... There is the obvious a difference in price and it is it : now we get to hard work of upgrading the kit that is not completely finished in this moment when I write this, but will be done with all the MarisStella kit line very soon ... So Antony and all of you great people on MSW : Put Your Trust !

Great explanation, Zoran. I appreciate that your company is offering so many kits of local sailing craft. Indigenous small craft have been largely overlooked in some countries.

Trimming down with the scalpel to get closer to the standard oar.

    And further still

    Side view

Shaped the blade - using the file now, as I did on the mast, rotating the oar in my fingers to check for roundness and filing down any lumps and bumps.

Cleaned-up with the file and then sanded to finish. Note the pencil line near the base - this is to mark where the oar goes through the oarport.

    The finished oar side-on.

Here's my theoretical midship section, to give some idea of the oars.

Sorry, I wasn't holding the camera quite straight so it looks like the ship has developed a list.

It was very difficult getting enough headroom for the lower oarsmen while keeping the ship low enough in the water to allow a workable angle for the upper bank of oars - the deck beams are only the equivalent of 100mm (4") deep, which won't span from side to side of the ship without bowing, so there are a pair of beams running the length of the ship to support them, held up in their turn by a series of posts - positioned so a person can walk between them but allowing the oarsmen enough room to row.

None of this lower stuff appears on the model, but I had to work it out to my own satisfaction to see if it would work in the real world. Probably not the way they actually did it, but it is workable.

    come and get it

    Thanks Michael,
    But beer at room temperature.
No no, in Belgium we drink cooled beer

    Thanks,
    Kriek, also tasty.

It is still too hot here in Belgium (it is from 1976 ago that it has been so hot and dry here)
    So building is slow.
I started with the deck beams and the hanging knees.

The deck beams are made of cherry. They are 24 hours soaked in water and 24 hours clamped.
I made this a month ago to see if they kept the correct curved shape. Most remained correctly curved.

Most deck beams are placed. The rear beams are not yet installed, first I have to put the helm in place

    Still much to do.
Did a test set-up of the deck with the main mast.

Have to place LED lights and make lanterns (one prototype as a test, and for now not yet satisfied with the result).
    etc, etc.

    Thanks for following and likes

    Hello,

Further finishing the beakhead. Drawings of ships from around 1570 served as an example

    The photos speak for themselves.

    Bad luck

    Pre bending on a mold
Strips soaked in water and boiling water just before bending

The door is kept open with a wedge.

    ready.

I think I'm starting on the canon deck now.

I've made the mast steps and put them in. Here they are dry fitted:

The supports for the frame to hold the lower bank of oars are now glued in place:

And the frame has been glued to them.

Oops: I discovered that the pencilled guidelines I'd drawn to fix the angle of the oars faced 180 degrees the wrong way, so I had to erase them and redraw them. I still have a remnant of the wrong ones because I started with spirit pen at one end and couldn't get rid of it. As the pencil line around each oar where it goes through the oarport was getting faint I've also re-done the lines.

And the mast steps are now glued in, along with the blocking pieces.

Still working on the new masts and then I'll make the wedges to hold them in place. I also have to make and insert the mast partners to hold them rigidly.
