Richard, I do the same as Sal. I stick the tubing into a hole i made in a block of wood and take a razor saw to cut it down. to get to the final dimenstion I use either a file or sanding sticks.

I've just found your build. Very impressive. And you make no apology for taking your time. Really impressive. I see your are getting a ton of advice from folks. Most impressive of all. The commonuity is very generous and supportive and you have tapped into that BIG TIME. Way to go.
While certainly good for you, its great for me too. The conversation you are having with them really shows me the thought processes behind the approaches and the choices that get made. Your log is great for this.
The pics are great too. They show the work of one who really appreciates craftsmanship. While increasingly rare these days, craftmanship appears to be a hallmark of the model ship builders. You are proving yourself more than up to standard. I will enjoy following your progress.
BTW, thank you for the likes. They are voices of encouragement. And as a beginner, I need all I can get.

Thanks guys.... I hope so George. It's definitely a test of patience.
Elijah, I laughed when I read your comment - you're right - the best use of that skill is when I build another boat!
Below is my sister's Christmas card - they visited L'Hermione in period dress which surprised/delighted the crew.

Shaped the Boarding ladder steps. Added brass pins so they would hold better. Used thread to line them up straight. Glued the Quarter badges on. Added the Fenders, Chesstrees and Channels.

Thanks for the "likes" and comments.
That magic milestone... All planked, sanded, and one coat wipe-on poly. I do have one small area that needs some work as it has a stain. I don't think it's blood...
Lessons learned at this point.. many.
1) I should go a bit wider than the 1/8" width even if it's out of scale. Just for the eye appeal and the ease of working with the wood.
2) Use a "harder" wood, like boxwood. Pear deforms and dings easily.
3) Definitely not pear for gap-filling. Some areas went black, other areas look good. Strange stuff. I played with some scrap and it did the same thing. Either that or not use the poly and sawdust in the gap filling and live with the glue and sawdust.
4) A bit more care in the framing and fairing. I found some areas just weren't proper and had to fiddle with the frames before continuing.
Now to attend to the stern... which should be fun area and not as tedious.
