Ensign got a reaction from challenger86 in HMS Victory by Ensign - FINISHED - Caldercraft - Scale 1:72
    Update time

The hull has been painted and the upper gun deck is awaiting installation of the guns.

When assembling the gun carriages I discovered that the brass etched eyelets part No. 480 make excellent breeching rings, just cut off the leg and attach them to the Cascabel with thick superglue. the scale is just right as study of the single photo of a gun illustrates. There are plenty of spares in the kit so shortages are not a problem.

And now for something a little different. This model of Victory was on display at a shopping mall not far from where I live, the builders plan to take her on tour and have purchased a horse float for the purpose. Now that's real enthusiasm.

She was scratchbuilt from old redgum timbers with the decks laid in Huon Pine, an incredible achievement.

The ship is computer controlled so that the sides open up to reveal interior detail and some of the sails can be raised and lowered. All this is timed to cycle around every few minutes.

Time for an update, the second planking has been completed down to the keel. Overall I am quite happy with the result and feel I have a handle on the spiling of planks at the bow.

    Hi Grant,

Victory is looking superb, a great job. I particularly like your attention to detail using references like Longridge etc to get it right, that is what I aspire to. It gives one great satisfaction knowing you have done your best.

Hi Glenn, just read your post on the method you used for second planking. Thank you it is very timely as I am about to tackle this myself, after I finish setting up the Quarter Galleries. I like your method and have copied it in word and printed it out, hope you don't mind. The map pins are a great idea, I use titebond wood glue so they will help in holding the planks in place.

Time for an update. The first planking has now been completed. The benefit of spiling planks at the bow became very apparent as I progressed, not entirely necessary for first planking I know but good practice anyway. Now for a good deal of sanding and some filler.

After much searching I have found a source of the correct diamond pattern Hammock Netting for period model ships, I was looking in a store called Spotlight for those in Australia and NZ, not sure if they are in other countries but I'm sure there are similar haberdashery, craft type stores. The material is Mosquito Netting and found in the curtain department, it comes in a range of colors but most importantly cream and black it cost $4.99/Metre, enough for a flotilla. Hope this benefits others.
Can you post a picture of your product? Is it something like in post #19 above? I bought about a 1mt. of this material and have enough for a lifetime.

Sorry for the late reply Ulises, only just noticed your question. Yes that is the stuff.

    OK photos resized.

Bulkheads, middle gun deck and dummy gun barrel strips assembled and glued. The middle gun deck was planked prior to assembly as this seemed an easier way to do it.

Middle Gun deck planked. Four step Butt planking as per Longridge and the actual ship.

Start of first planking, after fairing the bulkheads.

    Hi Keith,

Caldercraft wins on all counts. I have heard some criticism of their instructions, but with this forum and experience as a model builder I don't see this as a big problem, common sense and forethought plays a big part. The Mamoli instructions leave a bit to be desired but the wood isn't bad, fittings fair, rigging line I would replace and did. Mamoli also requires a lot more fabricating of parts from wooden stock while Caldercraft parts are largely laser cut so much less work involved there, although still a challenge. Caldercraft fittings are in my opinion excellent and it is the most authentic Victory available at the moment.
    Hope this helps.

Excellent work Dan.I applaud the way in which you have exercised restraint and done the minimum to bring her current state. The thing to remember is the great sentimental value that the model must carry and completely rebuilding it would mean it was no longer really the model that you started with(coupled with the fact it would be a massive amount of time for yourself).

    Kind Regards Nigel

    Hi Gil & Kevin,

I modified my gun barrel drilling rig, took a deep breath and went at it. After drilling I dry fitted the dummy gun barrels and they look good, all centrally located and the height looks OK. The Caldercraft instructions say to use a 2mm drill bit, the fit was a bit loose in my opinion so after drilling the first hole I changed to a 1.7mm drill bit which produced an interference fit, much better, more control. Others may be interested to know this.

I need to get a build log up and running, watch this space. Well, maybe not this one but you know what I mean.

    Regards

Thanks Gil. Reassuring to know that your holes were too high as well, I will remake the jigs and try again. Yes, I am also concerned the drilling debris will become part of the model, and this was the main reason I considered drilling the holes at this stage.

Hi Ray, I just want you to know how much we appreciate your efforts with your build log, I am relatively new to wooden ship building, although I've built models most of my life. I have just finished my second wooden ship, the MS Clipper Flying Fish and she has turned out very nicely, I think. I have HMS Diana and Victory waiting so your log is an invaluable resource. Thank you so much.

Hi Kevin, I've been quietly following your build, excellent work. Thank you for the latest set of photos, the lighting outside was just right to show off the yellow ochre. I have the 1/90 scale Mamoli Victory waiting in the wings and was a little worried how she would look. I have the Caldercraft paint set for her but most builds I see show her looking rather more yellow, it's been many years since I visited Victory so don't remember exactly how she looks.

    Thanks
    Gary
