Jack12477 reacted to kees de mol in HMS ROYAL KATHERINE 1664 by Doris - 1/55 - CARD
Some of the pictures (or maybe all of them) I could look at for hours. Watching the beautifull sculpted golden ornaments I'm wondering... Are your hands also made of gold?
Your feathered assistant? Is that a good combo? I once had a feathered assistant and she "LOVED" paper and card! She was like a paper shredder and ripped every piece of paper in tiny pieces. Hope your assistent is better trained☺️
kind regards, Kees

As a complete newbie, I think it will be a long time before I can even get my head around how beautiful is this work!
Cheers,
John

This is the last time you'll see this vivacious, lovely, combat ship naked. She's now ready for paint.
I've added all the photo etch I intend to add before paint, so hopefully tomorrow I'll have the beginnings of some paint on her and execute a plan of attack to give her full dress.

Coming along very nicely mate, the hull looks the business and that deck grey looks perfect, I would imagine most deck painted areas would have used a kind of anti - slip paint?

I learned some special things with using lifecolor and handpainting -
1) Always keep the brushes cleaned with a jar of water to hand,
2) Keep the paint tubs/jars constantly agitated or stired,
3) Clean around the top of the tub/jar as dry paint often collects there,
4) Apply several thin coats and heat dry with a hairdryer to speed up applying each coat,
5) Apply a few very watery thinned down coats last - this tends to smooth out the paint layers.

Had some spare time today, so I got in th spray booth ... deck blue ... made on recipe
a bit of pastel added ... some more to go ...
Hope to get some time this week to paint deck furnishings, like the bridge, and raised gun platforms

Evening all, more time on the bench today it was "itty bitty" day lots of tiny bits without moving very far, I was carrying on with the hanger/boat deck attaching several small assemblies, I also applied a few coats of paint.
Upsss picked up a bit of dust in the last pic - must sort that out.
Here are a couple of pics.

For drilling a small hole in a small piece like that, you are probably much better off with a high speed drill than hand drilling it.
I'd use a very sharp bit in a dremel tool turning at high speed and it would probably drill through fairly clean as long as you used very light pressure.
Turning it very slowly lets the bit grab the wood and split it instead of just shaving off a tiny bit with each rotation.
I'm way too far away for a trip just for this, but if you do want to drive out here you are welcome to do it on my mill.

Here we go again! The instructions say to drill the small rigging holes in the pre-cut top cross trees before removing them from the laser-cut sheet. Guess what? I gently took the smallest drill bit I had that would make a tiny hole for the rigging...and the cross tree split after two turns (gently)! I'll figure out how the rig them another way.

Jack12477 reacted to flying_dutchman2 in Boyer by flying_dutchman2 - FINISHED - Scale 1:48 - 17th Century Dutch Coastal water freighter by Marc Meijer
The book from Witsen is excellent. For a guy like me who builds pretty much only Dutch ships, this book is an education for me. Chapter 2 is the biggest and the most detailed. It describes how to build a Pinas in 122 steps. It is highly technical, very detailed in each piece that is part of the ship. The line drawings, and there are many of them, show how it was done. Other chapters discuss what the inventory is for each man on the ship for one year. Contracts for building a ship. Chapter 1 explains how Hoving wrote the book, what is different, etc.
Took Hoving 14 years to translate from 17th century Dutch to present day dutch (800+ pages). 200+ pages are relevant to ship building and that is what this book is about. Took him another 3 years to translate from Dutch to English and 3 to build the Pinas following Witsen's instruments.
I agree, it is pricy, but personally, worth it. I did get it through Amazon. I plan to build the Pinas. So with this book and the plans from the merchant book I am all set.
Plan to build all the merchant ships. First the 1:48 scale and then the1:96 scale which I want to do in 1:48 scale. Just don't know what to do with them once they are all finished. Maybe build a diorama with all of them in it and then beg a naval museum to take it from me.
W. F. zu pferde is a beautiful ship.

#Jan. The English book has the same plans as the merchant book, but they are printed on the pages of the book, so I think too small if you want to build a model of it.
#LandlubberMike. Agreed with a 'change of the English ships'.
The English wrote everything down and so there are more plans of them. The Dutch did not. The senior shipwright taught the junior shipwright and so on. Very little was written down. So the Boyer I am building is an interpretation from contracts, paintings and etchings. No actual plans.

Thank you for this beautifull building report of this very interesting merchant ship. Also interesting are your unconventional ways of building. I like it how you find a way to build everything. Keep up the good work!

Jack12477 reacted to michael mott in 28' Ranger-type Yacht by Mark Pearse - FINISHED - 1:12
Hi Mark I just noticed that you have round headed screws holding the tracks to the deck. I would have thought that these would have been flat head screws to keep the surface free of obstructions, especially the pin of the car.

thanks, & on consideration Michael I have to agree with you that visually the heads are too bulbous to get away with. For this model there's a number of things that are simplified technically but I'll have a look at this one & see what I can do. I bought some packs of brass miniature rivets & I like them so much they are appearing all over the place.

Mark if you use a jewelers saw and take a couple of strokes across the flat of the rivet it looks like a screw. like this

Hello,
thanks for the nice comments, and also for
the LIKES.
An anchor buoy has been completed in the meantime.
I put the buoy rope around the arm of the anchor and tied it to the anchor shaft twice. The size of the buoy rope is one-third of the cable. The length varies, for it is shortened or lengthened according to the depth of the water in which you will drop the anchor.
Usually the buoy rope was at least 18 threads long.

Hi CDW
This is really quite the ship. Unique to the point that I just had to read up on it a little. I kind of wish it was stationed around here as I have a Navy parking spot about six blocks from my home and I could walk to the bluff and take all the pictures I wanted. Instead all we seem to get are the 1100+ foot Bird Farms and their decks are empty whenever they park them. 😒
I did run across this picture though and wondered about all the tie downs on the flight deck.
I can't really see any in the picture. I still think it is an interesting ship/model and I like seeing the effort you are putting into it.
