thanks for the kind comments and the likes!  I've done my best to keep with the Billing's plans,  but I did change thing enough to keep away from the copyright monster.   if one was to purchase this kit and build it though,  I think you would be just as pleased with the outcome.

George:   every kit has at least a couple parts that are not used........some reveal that the kit may also build into another model that the company offers,  some are simply extras.   it's when you start to see big pieces laying around.......that's when you get scared!

Greg:     there is a beauty to these types of builds.   I enjoy doing sailing ships as well,  but it very hard to expand on them,  as can be done with these types of vessels.   the window is very narrow.    with F/V builds.....quite a bit of detail can be added,  even if your doing a replica build.   as with any model,  keeping within the subject is very important.........take it from me,  I've fallen off the edge a few times {one time actually worked}.

John:     believe it or not,  the plans do not show anything in the way of fish boxes.   some of the models I've seen have what look like crates on board,  rather than crab traps and such.   this vessel's primary catch is swordfish,  and most likely tuna as well.  I have some detail ideas in mind.....haven't given much thought about boxes........I think I'll do a bit more digging

Greg:     what the Holiday Harbor build is about,  is the replication of hulls from known kits.  the hull that has become the Andrea Gail,  is actually a French fishing vessel,  known as the Boulogne Etaples.   it another Billing's kit........it's supposed to be out of production at this point in time,  but I have seen the kit still being offered on some websites.  there were to be three vessels in that build,  but only two turned out to have valid subjects.   the A.G. was the first vessel I thought of when I built the frame and planked it..........and when I found that the hull dubbed "Larry"  was the odd man out,  I jumped at the opportunity.........I guess you could say  'with both feet'      I really didn't need to add another build to my roster,  but once I started on her,  I found that I couldn't stop.  usually,  I'll stop at a certain point and turn to another build,  just to keep the others active.   I feel a bit relieved that MSW ,  has been kind enough to let a crazy guy like me,  run rampant on their website,  with all the open logs I've got in the works.   I was trying to be good......my intent was to clear them up and finish them,  before moving on to new ideas.   this build is a good example with how that plan has been working for me

Carl:   thanks for posting the link........I would have done it       I really appreciate it!.

Fantastic model of your Dad's boat Piet. I was very glad to have been able to meet you and to see that fine model in person. It is nice to see the personal connection as the drive to build a masterpiece like that.  Thank you for sharing your story with me. That is the type of History you can't get from a book.

                                    Happy Modeling.

Looks great Ken. Definitely a unique approach, but so far the results are outstanding. There will be quite a few deck fittings that can be installed off the ship as well.

Finally finished up the gun stripes. The bows sections required carving away stock from the framework to allow for the thickness of the carrier plywood. I am also very satisfied with the color as compared to photographs available. While waiting for paint and glue to set I also finished up the lower transom down to the keel.

I then fabricated a deck pattern using the model structure rather than the plans with various pieces of spare stock. 1/16" square was used on the sides for ease of bending and being cross braced to maintain shape. The real challenge here was to not glue the pattern to the structure.

Once the pattern glue was set; reinforcement braces were added to assure correctness of pattern. I then cut a 1/32" sheet using the pattern.

The 1/32" pattern required a little perimeter fussing to sand to a press fit. I still have to add the slots for the two masts. This is what I will use as a pattern to now build the deck which I think will be much easier to build outside the hull than inside. I will also have the benefit of being able to access the inside when adding the hull planking. This may not be a traditional approach, but I will find out soon enough.
I am also thinking of using black glue on the decking to emphasis the grouting and stain the decking with colonial oak. I will do a test section first to see what it looks like.

What can I say except "beeaauuttiiful" . I know what you mean about the extra parts laying around. Seems like every project has some left-over things that need to be relegated to the realm of "extras". It's usually at that time when I finally, as a last resort, try taking a look at the directions.

Guess who the very first face I see in the parking lot as I begin unloading my ships at the Exhibition this evening.... None other.
I knew him as soon as we made eye contact. What an amazing evening we had....and this was just the set up party.
I can hardly wait for tomorrow. Wish you were all here with us.

    Hi Dennis

Compared to the intricate pulleys, blocks, rigging, boom framework and other associated details that you've built into your AG, trust me, building a hull is child's play! You'll ace it, for sure!

my tables are in the computer room.......the admiral has her desk in the corner.....and I pretty much have the rest of the room.  she is disabled with back and shoulder problems,  but she is not confined {I try like hell to keep her that way}.   I would like to have a separate room,  and keep the dust away from the electronics,  but she won't have any of it.......says she won't see me as much.   this is most likely true,  with the way I model,  but I like it as well.  I have someone to talk to,  and bounce my ideas off of.   as for the dust.......it the really fine stuff......I do the major sanding out on the porch.  yesterday,  for fun,  I wrote 'Popeye' on the monitor shelf on my desk........still waiting fro her to notice.   yea....I know.....time for the total cleaning of my desk

    Sam,

The key question is: 'Is she still your Admiral ...???' I know Mark enjoys the love of his life to the fullest, and I for one cannot imagine them having any static, even towards his planking, and sanding of this beauty of a build of his.

    Mark,

I would suggest a mixing of the two. Some yard work, followed by some planking ... it won't go fast, though it will move for'ard ... besides, as a good Dutch saying goes: You'll combine the usefull with the pleasurable. ... Another option is to let the yard go crazy ...   not an option I presume... ??

That's what we call 'a mobile unit' Bob. I'd rather be near at hand by the admiral ... I like a face to face communication, else there is always some form of static ... besides, a surprise visit from the admiral to the workshop can be very stimulating ...

A bit more fiddling with the Carb.
First I made a whole new one with a flange at the manifold side. The top air intake also needed to have the adjusting screw added, it was easier to make a new one rather than trying to fix the first one.

I "knurled" the edge of the adjusting screw by pressing the head of the 1x72 screw under the edge of a file and rolled it along on a flat surface of MDF then beveled the edged on the lathe. the spring came out of a tiny ball race which I took apart for the springs and balls.
