Piet got a reaction from Adrieke in Muscongus Bay Lobster Smack by Piet - FINISHED - Midwest Products - length 15"
Today - - - what did I do today - - - oh yeah, in the morning after my morning coffee I decided to make the trail boards. Wont cement them on yet because I'm not sure yet how to finish them. Yes, they'll be painted green but what kind of decorative motief to put on it.
Then there is the question of a name and where to put it.
I needed to scrape some of the white off at the places where the trail boards are to be cemented.
I installed the bowsprit with my previously made hardware and also installed the lower stay.
Then it was time for me to drive down to see my urologist / oncologist for the 3 month visual check. I got a little scare last week. His assistant called me and told me that the lab found questionable stuff in the urine sample. Well, when the doc looked inside the bladder he was very pleased and told me that it looked perfect, better then three years ago when the cancer was found, not to worry about the lab findings. This was good news and I'm a very happy camper
After I came back I had to get my passport pics taken and complete my passport renewal forms. Gwen wants to mail them out tomorrow. Passports, did he say passports? Yup, Gwen and ur daughter Marianne cooked up a plan to go to the Netherlands this June for three weeks!!!!!!
Okay, I had some extra time and installed the mast. I also installed the fore stay. I used 0.1 mm brass wire for both the bowsprit and fore stay instead of the kit suggested black thread.
To simulate turnbuckles I used small pieces of 1 mm brass tube. I had to drill these out with a #72 drill bit so I could double the wire back through them to secure it and then a touch of solder.
I think that I really need to make the display / mounting board for this little thing to give me a steady base for the rest of the rigging. The kit suggested one is a joke and this little boat deserves something nicer. I have a small plank of basswood that I can shape on my mini router and then stain it in oak, walnut or something like that. I have two nice looking pillars for the keel to rest in. We'll see how this basswood idea works out. I looked in the craft sore but they had nothing I could use that looked anywhere near decent.
Okay, here are a few pics of today's efforts.
This is a close-up pic taken with my Canon 100 mm macro lens. I was too lazy to get my tripod and set the aperture smaller for better depth of field. Here you can see the bolt I made a few days ago with two washers and a nut. You can also the fuzzies from that #*^%@( boxwood on the samson post. Looks like I need to take care of that too.
Same camera setup. Here we have a washer and the nut "screwed" on. I secured it with a dab of CA. I don't think that bowsprit is going anywhere soon
Same camera setup. Here you see the backstay installation. You can also see where I scraped off some of the paint for the trail boards.

Thanks everyone for looking in and your like votes, it's much appreciated.
Hey George, you know women, they have always something to hmmmm, point out Yeah, Gwen pointed out a few raggedy edges from the masking tape. Old eagle eyes Gwen but I'll try to clean them up as best as I can. Yeah, I like the green paint too, it's the same color I used on the model of her Friendship sloop.
Hi Popeye, Yes, I love the paint as well. A sofa ??????? The crew should be happy with two bunks with mattresses and blankets, a cupboard and table No wet bar yet though.

Piet got a reaction from Krelis in Hr. Ms. O 19 1938 by Piet - FINISHED - scale 1:50 - submarine of the Royal Navy Netherlands in service 1939 - 1945
Hello all and Gwen and I wish all a very happy and healthy Thanksgiving. And to all non Americans have a great and healthy day!
Between all the chores around the house I did manage to cement the frames to the v.2.0's keel. The only problem I had was with frame 9. I didn't want to cut a slot into the sternpost knee and decided to cut that frame in the center and but cement it to the keel. Ill drill a few holes in it so I can pin the two sides to the keel with a bamboo pin. This in itself will be adventure because of the grain at that point.
Right now it's not strong enough to hold up to all the handling that'll take place with the planking.
I have pre-faired all the frames but will check the fairing and adjust it as necessary. As you can see on the pics below I have added small strips of about 1 mm between the frames to give them a little more strength. I may have to run a thin strip over all the frame bottoms like a keelson.
All these frames are still rough and will be dressed down after the planking is on. Compared to Omega's dinghy this is a giant vessel
Okay, here are the pics of the progress I made.

Thans everyone for dropping in and for hitting the like button.
Hey Augie, great seeing you here and thanks for the kudos. Yeah, I like the green, it reminds me of the Dutch ships and houses in Holland. I find it a happy color.
Hi George, yes, that wetting or damping of wood is something not wel known except for real wood finishers. I use a wood conditioner for soft woods, it holds the wood fibers together and hardens it some. Final wet-sanding with at least a 600 grit wet or dry sandpaper. Comes out like a baby's skin.
Hoi Sjors, glad you found me even with such a short name Piet, yup, that's short but like my name-sake, a famous Dutch admiral, my deeds are great
Thank you my friend for being amazed at my humble little kit build. I did figure out that kit building is very difficult - that's why I'd rather do scratch building, much easier.
Well, today was more of a frustration day then progress. The stain on the display board just didn't want to dry. Even setting it outside in the sun (70 F) it wouldn't dry and remained slightly sticky. This is setting me back big time because I really wanted to mount it to the display board..
But I did some more touchup paint work and fiddled some with the boom. I added the gaff fork to it as Dee_Dee suggested but now have a problem in holding it to the mast and making ready for fastening the sail to it. I know, I could have temporarily tied it ti the mast but instead I installed parrels inside the gaff type fork
I'm also working on the cord that prevents the boom from being pulled up by the sail. Very tricky place to work, it's between the cabin and mast, not much room to serve it.
I hope that the stain has dried enough by tomorrow so I can mount the boat to it and get on with the rigging. Looks like that making the sails will commence very soon.
Cheers to all,

Very nicely done on that bulkhead Sjors. It even had door handles on the doors! Are they hinged and work too???

Yup, I know the feeling about finding dried-up paint when you want to use it. In my case it was a 5 mile run to get some new paint. The mast work looks splendid John, great going my friend.

Looking nice Piet! Been using the old "wet the wood" trick for many years. It works amazingly well on hardwood to get that smooth-as-glass finish. Just wet, let it dry, then block-sand. Doing that 2 or 3 times usually does the trick.
Cheers

Today was a bit tedious again, making Futtoch Shrouds for the Foremast, and re-doing the Mast Top and painting the Foremast. As luck would have it, the bottom of the Foremast below the Brittania Spider band is Yellow Ochre, the above that is white, so I grab the Yellow Ochre bottle only to discover it's hard as a rock. So finishing and mounting these will have to wait until an order from Model Shipways gets here next week. Lots to build so I don't have to worry, only it's frustrating when you're making progress and don't have something.

Piet reacted to JesseLee in Scottish Maid by JesseLee - FINISHED - Artesania Latina - 1:50
Very near finishing the Scottish Maid. Wishing Keith was around to see me complete it. Since I'm so near to the end I'm taking another look at the details around the ship. I noticed the reef points on the port side of the Main Mast Boom Sail. I have the sail catching wind from the starboard side, billowing out on the port side. The way this makes the sail shaped the reef points should not be laying sloppily against the sail on that side. I painted each one with watered PVA & clipped them to dry so they would hang down.

Patrick, John, Kevin, Popeye, Nils, and all you who hit the like button. Thanks for looking in and telling me you like what I am building. This is the third stove I built. First I tried to make it out of wood covered in foil, and it looked like wood covered in foil. Then I tried plastic, I’ve never made anything out of plastic. Still haven’t. For years I've kept telling myself, ‘If the prototype is wood make the model wood, if metal, make it metal’. So I ended up making it out of brass. Why didn’t I do that first?
This is the first time I have tried the modular method and I like it. I’ll probably use it in other boats as well. Until next time.

It's all going a bit slow at this moment - due to other projects and things I'm working on.
However - I know you are all eager waiting for further steps.
Busy on the bow, made some ornaments out of small coins.
That's all I can show for now - sorry.

pulling out the white paint..........more white?!?!?! yes.....folks, I'm building a boat......in black 'n white! even the instructions are in black 'n white! could it be.........is this the reason why I'm going in circles with these colors? MAN!!!!! I gotta run out right now, and find a kit that has full color instructions!
spoof'in's fun.....isn't it? why.......I do it all the time well, anyway.....the ice maker needed a second coat.......right along with the frame of the vent. I was real careful not to get any on the fins........and then it happened! crrrrraaaaapppp! hey....... ......that don't look too bad! I did the tips of the fins with a damp brush........and the rest is posterity.
not much else to do with the vent........so I finished off the ice maker. the door handles and hinges are just bent brass rod {different sizes}. painting the heads of some 7 mm brads made for simulated bolts or screws.....whichever the mind prefers.
the vent was put in place.
....and together, they exist......in perfect symbiosis {or as near as I can get them}

making the flat part of the roof was easy.......
making the visor was another. the curved front was beveled to accentuate the slant....and then it started! I couldn't get the curve right, without causing the roof to curve along with it. I was using the last piece of 1/32 thick flat stock I had....ended up making that unusable in short order. luckily I have that pack of thin strip mahogany {25 mm wide}.......so I used it. at this point, I was pretty fed - up with trying to be pretty with it.......cut the width of the sides and roughed it out {wished I had three hands for it}
once the glue had dried...to the point where it was holding well enough, the top part of the visor was trimmed flush with the roof.
in between this foolishness, I had painted some 2 mm thin strip black, and began to make the fins for the grates in the ice maker and the vent. this was another trial of patience.......with putting as many fins in the space....and keeping the spacing even {I kinda lost that battle}. complicating the matter, is the fact that everything is black.
I had to wait a few times for the glue to dry......I was using a long pin to adjust the fins. I'd hit the preceding one.........and that would put me back where I started. but I got them both done.
I did a lot of adjustments and sanding to get the visor in shape. mahogany is not an easy wood to work with....especially at this thickness. still need to do a little more to the port side front corner.
around the back, I wasn't too keen on leaving the corners open.....so I did this. I might change it though......I thought of something else. either way I go....there is enough roof overhang, where it won't hinder the entrance.

Thank you Marc for kind words. I am looking for upper horizotal deadeye rail surface content, in intend not to miss something. I think I found 90% for now. Probably I'll find rest when start to learn about and follow all rope lines
Thank you Mark for support. "Carrion comfort" by D. Simons ... good book for beach, but written on a template "how to make bestseller" ... you know this style used by many USA authors: " East London, 14:45... Taking short look to his Rolex, Hero hit his Samsonite briefcase throught window ... They hunt me !!! "
Almost Huh and Ouch ... but after hard artilery I have read before, it is a nice change
Her Majesty is happy today, I spent with Her almost whole afternoon, considering strike is over, and we start to work on Monday
Both rails finished and mounted, and I am starting with painting, looking for correct color
Things slowly come to their place ...
White panels now look very well, and this stage I was waiting for until time I made them
Now, color war begin
