Hi Neil there are lots of great videos on YouTube and Vimeo than can guide you on how to start the build log. I even find myself going back to some of my videos asking “How did i do that again” the learning curve is so steep and the experimentation so diverse that sometimes i forget the finial solution. Good luck to you sir kevin

Hi Gary since there is no known confirmed plan of the boat there is no way of knowing the size of the deck planks. Having said that they do look a bit over size. In terms of your approach to planking i found it much easier to plank the entire deck except the cockpit placing the various fieces of deck furniture on top of the deck. This allows for a clean line bewteen the deck and the deck furniture. The only area where this was not possible was at the cockpit . i had to instally a moulding to get a clean transition between the external wall of the cockpit and the deck. She looks beautiful and you should be very proud.

Last of the deck furniture. I decided to add this front hatch as it is shown in some of the plan drawings. In a racing boat this would be an essential access point for changing sails on the front deck. In this version of the America I also changed the middle grate for another hatch which would also allow better access. Grates would have been useful in boats envolved in carrying freight. This boat was designed primarally as a racing boat.

She is really looking beautiful . The inside molding on the seat would not be done that way simply because you would not be able to sit right back . But that’s nitpicking. First class model

This is my first real attempt to make lifeboats. I am struggling but plan to make a few more until I get it down pat. Follow this I’ll make a video on it . I am using lead boats supplied with the Bellona as the mold. It’s not perfect but it will get there. The sail ail did not come out to bad. On the scratch build model I will use silk span and fold them.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
