Glen, I just stumbled upon your build, and it is truly amazing.  It also brings back some wonderful memories.

My parents spent their last few decades living in Hawaii, and as a young adult I lived there 18 of those years.  At some point, my dad, a life-long sailor and a great admirer of the Polynesian voyagers, bought the completed model pictured below.  I think he found it in Hawaii, but it might have been in French Polynesia.  In any event, I was lucky enough to inherit it, and it now sits right beside my work bench.

My years in Hawaii included the initial voyages of Hokulea, the first modern replica of these amazing vessels.  One of the greatest thrills of my many sailing adventures was sailing several miles offshore on my Hobie 16 (along with maybe another hundred other boats) to greet Hokulea on her return to Kaneohe Bay, at the end of her initial voyage to French Polynesia and the island of Tahiti.  That was in the mid-70s, and I still remember it almost like it was yesterday.

Again, congratulations on a great build.

Very nice gold painting! I'm wondering, did you sand it to get the excess paint off, or some thing else? Thanks!

Buffalo rails and mooring bits. You can also tell I beefed up my cap rail as I had sanded it flush. Same for the covering board. Working through the last of sheet two details. Rudder and tiller next.

Yes, I remember it was fairly annoying. I think I ended up printing a copy of the plans and cutting out my templates from that to get the right sizes.

Patrick, no worries. I'm sure you follow a number of builds, as do I. I can't even keep up with all of them most of the time !

The gunboat log should start in a few weeks, but I'm not going to bet on it! I've learned a lot about the reliability of over optimistic  predictions .

    Thanks Ken!

Thanks Rick! The boat was designed by Dennison Lawlor and was built in 1868 in New York.

    Rob,
Sadly America has never seemed to put much value to what we now consider priceless items. Consider the abysmal fate of the historic Yacht America. Launched in the 1850s, after setting the mark to win the 100 Guineas Cup, which has forever now been known as the America's Cup, she survived being a Confederate Blockade Runner as well as a Union Blockade enforcer during the Civil War. While the US Navy had ultimately planned to restore her, they left her poorly protected. As a result, a damn snowstorm collapsed the shed she was resting in and she became a total loss in the 1940s, when she was 90 years old.
This disgraceful history of benign neglect continues to thi day. Back in the 60s, I used to love to watch Hawaii 5-0. Not only did it feature one of my favorite Montague Dawson works of art The Ariel and Taeping very often a wonderful fully restored 4 masted sailing ship the Falls of Clyde featured as a constant backdrop.
Fast forward to today and that same magnificent steel ship is so neglected, she's in danger of sinking...

    Rob,
Mike has come through for us yet again. Per your specific request, here's the image of Glory of the Seas being dismantled in 1922. Mike scans these amazing images and attaches them as e-mails. They arrive with some white space surrounding the image. To maximize the image, white space has been cropped out and the image has been rotated for better viewing. The picture itself is left entirely intact.

The earliest carronades were mounted on the 'outside principle' with the pivot point outside the port. Also, early carronades did not have a muzzle extension to direct blast away from spreading to rigging. Photos are of carronades for Comet, 1783. I did quite a bit of research on these when I built that model.

Got the gun deck and upper deck gun ports marked off.
Marked off the top timber heights.
just have the forecastle and quarterdeck gunports to do.
Made the keelson pieces and dry fitted them on the floors and aft deadwood.

    Here the model is done.
I will make the base pieces in wood.
I will scale this 3D model down to 1:64 for the 32 Pdr and then then again at 75% for the 18 Pdr, create my STL file and get them resin printed.

    Updated 6/7/2922.

Installing the upper rail for the shields to lay against. This rail would also serve as the drapes support for the anti-boarding net (back then, naval engagement is about get close to the enemy’s ship and board the ship to fight it out & take the ship as the prize. Unlike later on, to sink the enemy ship as far away as possible with canon fires).

This rail  runs all the way to the stern (this why the components on the main deck need to installed beforehand. Access will be harder)

using one of shield to check for rail spacing.

The vertical rail supports installations turned out to be a nightmare (as they tend to pull on the upper rail as the glue dries. This distorted the rail to linear instead of the original curve parallel to the hull). I ended up gluing the vertical supports to the mid ship deck rail. After they are firmly dried, then glue the top rail one at a time until each is solidly dried first. That did the trick.

Since this is a single plank model. The rail (a horizontal light wood streak running in parallel against the darker hull bulwark) will be visible. A portion of rail that would visible is craved out(see right side arrow) and replaced w the same hull wooden strip (mahogany).
The hull bulwark looked as it should after the craved out replacement   (no light color rail strip visible).

Get the big old version fixed up and back on display or take her to the attic

Last winter, in January, I thought I had plenty of time before now to both complete the 3/16 in to ft scale version and the ¾ in to ft scale version.  Well too many other things were going, so to avoid taking the big one to the attic, I got it sort of done and back in the gallery.  I then set the small one back up on the shelf.
One of my diversions is the research I am doing to give a lecture this summer on the shipyards of Boothbay.  With all that study now done, it is hard to focus on Massachusetts vessels….ha ha
Any way with a few photos below I show the updated status “ to look at” rigging is done and she is resting comfortably.   The “to make it sail” rigging was started but truthfully is laying on the deck for another day.   This build may indeed set a record for duration

Here below we see the spring effort

214     the starting point to just stand up the masts.
    215.    all rigged and set in new resting place.
216    a look at the bow rigging .
    217      turning new belaying pins.
218    tapering belaying pins for setting
    219.      Rail with new pins and line tied off.   Here I started to make coils, but then thought…if this is a RC sailable model, are the working lines to be working or made fast and coiled etc.  all for another time
    220.    here she sits in front of old Charles Norton. My recent schooner   Ada Cliff just went downtown for the summer, so the gallery is a bit thin I am off to a new build so this one must rest again
    Cheers

I just looked through your build log and this work is literally jaw-dropping! I really did have my jaw open when I saw this! The level of detail you have achieved is amazing! I greatly admire your build and wish to follow and learn from you. If I am ever able to build something half as good as this some day I will be very happy!

I removed the masking tape today after a second coat of blue paint yesterday and I was relieved to find a nice paint line all the way across each side of the hull. I am going to wait another day for the blue paint to fully dry before masking it off for the red sections along the bulwarks.

While waiting for the paint to dry, I cleaned the char off the outer trim pieces and the tops of the bulwarks. This was tedious work, but I managed to not break anything while doing it, which again surprised me. I am going to try soaking and bending these as they are now once the red paint is finished. There is still char around the window frames because these areas will be painted black before the trim is added to the hull.

To start the painting of the upper bulwarks, I masked off the lower hull. I brushed on some wipe on poly over the edge of the masking tape to help prevent bleeding. I then gave the upper bulwarks the first coat of Humbolt Matt Blue enamel. So far, so good.

I also started cleaning up the wood trim pieces that will be added to the outer hull after it is painted. These are very delicate and require a light touch. As others have done I will separate some of the rails of the larger pieces so I can control where the joints end up.

That's how good Chris' working cradle is - haha.

I cleaned up the oval gun ports and the top edges of the inner and outer bulwarks. The next step in the instructions is to paint the outer bulwarks but before I do that I gave the outside and inside hull and deck a coat of wipe on poly.

    Painting is next.
