Dave,
I wish I could apply a huge "like" to all of your inputs.
This build log is great!
Looking forward to more.

Dave and Jon,
My waterways are gray both fore and aft (between the stanchions). I do not remember if I read about gray waterways or guessed it from the Nova Scotia archive photos. At one point I was planning to put gray or white boards on the cabin roof (think overgrown cutting boards) but didn't get to it and liked the planked look. This was my first build so I was not striving for accuracy.
Jon, I have the link to the 1/24 scratch build. It looks like a lot of fun. If you have a build log I would like to follow your progress. Correction, just found it.
Dave, your rails look great! She is shaping up very nicely. I look forward to seeing how you will outfit the deck furniture. Have fun!

Jon,
It is hard to see in Dave's photo in post #61 because of the angle (and the fact that the waterway on the quarter deck is just between the stanchions), but I believe he went with grey on the waterways. This is a little more obvious from his build log, which has some photos of the waterway on the fore deck. Pretty much every resource I've seen lists grey for the waterways. I think in many older b/w photos, this would likely come off as being a little darker than the white on the bulwarks.
I've seen a few references to the roof tops being painted at various times, and sometimes covered with canvas, so I imagine the color there could be open to some artistic interpretation depending on the state you want to model the ship in. The photos I've seen of the current Bluenose II seem to have the roofs planked in wood similar to the deck. I think the most likely case was that these roof tops were painted or covered on the original ship, but I suspect many modelers of the Bluenose I use the 'natural wood' look of the Bluenose II because it looks good. (I'm planning on doing that myself).
The other day I was reading through a great write up on the model ship builder website by Philip Eisner that details a lot of what he found during an exhaustive research project to figure out all the details of the original Bluenose. He lists the waterways and cabin tops as grey.
My guess is that the original Bluenose, as a working boat, got some occasional paint jobs during the off season over her life, and likely had a few different configurations.

Dave
I would like to follow up on a detail that comes through on Dave Borgens post 61 above. I hope he is still following.
the water way in the embeded photo are brown...I think the B&W photos of Bluenose, in the Nova Scotia archive, and obviously in later life, show them similar tone to the decking but lighter than the black. Bluenose ll used black the main model inside Lunenberg Museum has them and the roof tops two tones of green
do you have any more info that that?
cheers

Elijah reacted to SomethingIsFishy in USS Constitution by SomethingIsFishy - FINISHED - Revell - 1:196 scale - PLASTIC
Another birthday gift, started painting the hull so why not start the log?
I know I started a revell Constitution when I was a kid, but never finished it. I figured it was probably the smaller one, I didn't think my parents would buy me a 3 foot long model ship, and I didn't see myself having the means to buy the big one myself. So I ordered this kit with an amazon gift card from my sister in law. It's not the one I had... after looking into reviews and videos on YouTube I have determined that I somehow ended up with the 1:96 kit as a kid!! So I don't get to "finish the one I started ", at least not now, but I'm sure I'll still have fun building this smaller one...

I have not posted since early October so I thought that I should bring you up to date. In my last post I had installed the bulwarks. Following installation I painted them white and then installed the bracing which was made from brass wire.

Greg, what color will the treadplate get painted? I have a 1/700 Mogami in the stash and the painting instructions are less than stellar. Lucky they reference Tamiya colors. No Model Master or Vallejo cites in their instructions.

Even from these preliminary stages, it looks like this will be another finely detailed model Greg.

Moving along, I have done everything t the deck I can do before painting. There are marked places for the stanchions but I cannot drill them until I do up the hull.
The Forecastle is a very nice mold. As you can see from the AOTS there is not really much to be done here.
The Tamiya capstan and cable holder are fairly bland; and I have replaced them with the Chrysanthemum set which is just lovely.
The front hawser hole is provided by Tamiya but the other brass is all Pontos.
Now it's in its' box until painting time. What next?

Little update, the crane runners for the ships launches.
The main metal pieces are 1 piece of PE, but the struts are each about 2mm x 1mm x 0.3mm. In order to place them as they are tiny triangles, it's a matter of placing them facing the right way in some blu-tack and running some CA in the grooves then using the tweezers to place them. Once placed, run some thin CA to seat them permanently, and watch some fall off, and repeat. There are 24 on each side and the kit provides 50, and I only lost 4 so a few tiny offcuts of old PE did the trick.
There is very very little reference as to how it works so a bit of scratch building/imaginative interpretation as to how I will sling the launches much much later in the build.
I am awaiting some perforated beams to place on some edges and this piece will be finished for all intensive purposes.
I am now moving on to the deck, drilling and prepping areas that will be replaced by the Pontos parts plus a couple of hundred stanchion holes.

Not at all, I had no idea that's what they were called. That's how we learn. I don't think many people would get the other reference!

Hi Greg, have edited my post to remove the ref completely Sorry mate, rereading I hope you didn't think I was preaching terminology re "sponsons" - it wasn't intentional and simply automatic for me to use this terminology with my background.

Banyan, I know what you mean and have edited it! I have to type all the time at work and after 27 plus years of it I'm still crap at it. Night shift is interfering with the build at the moment.
I posted mid sleep, sponson supports, I've learnt something new!

Fascinating build, Greg. I didn't realize that the Yamato had a hanger deck.. almost an aircraft carrier in addition to being a battleship.

Looks good Greg, those sponson supports have a lot of detail for such small items.

Hi Greg. Yamato is looking super!
Where are you sourcing your stanchions. Are those Northstar items as well?

Having read the instructions again, I need to add the Type 96 25mm AA gun mounts to the rear flight deck. A little more drilling and as the aft ones overhand the deck, a little bit of filling with card and putty. I have circled the areas that needed work, and after smoothing it out, added some support stanchions.
When I affix it to the hull I will place three more behind each of these but I need them to sit flush on the hull and I will wait for that.
Next will be the railings/runners for the launches.

I keep thinking the same - my next build will have all the experience from my Warspite build including early lessons learned and techniques and know how.

Elijah reacted to RGL in IJN Yamato by RGL - FINISHED - Tamiya - 1/350 - PLASTIC
Not frustrating just part of the build really, I discovered more holes I am supposed to drill out too for the rear gun mounts (the PE instructions are so complex I really really really need to keep reading the kit instructions in conjunction), that also require support struts underneath.
I am still waiting on some perforated beams that will go on the stern of this piece, which in total will probably represent about 3% of the entire build. The volume of work is enormous before I even consider purchasing an airbrush and learning how to use it, then learning how to use it properly and teaching myself proper weathering techniques with it.
My previous 3 kits have been an excellent primer for this one as a lesson in patience.

That is one very detailed kit Greg; how frustrating it must be to drill and assemble all those individual stanchions.

Elijah reacted to stripehunter in Swift 1805 by stripehunter - FINISHED - Artesania Latina - 1:50 - first build
I agree there are some oddities there. I decided to just go with them and build pretty much as-is given my lack of experience. I think i'll be improvising a lot more when i get to the president.

Great! Looking forward to see the outcome! I'm going to start on the rigging myself. Already seeing some illogical ways of attaching a halliards in the manual/riggingplan (through the mast!!!), so I'm looking for another way of doing that. Keep up the good work!

Got my anchors rigged and installed. I spent the day with the admiral's sewing machine stitching up sails. I suppose I could toss them in the trash and basically be done, but I think I'm going to string them up and have a look.
