    Hi All,

Thanks for kind comment Hamilton and to all, my thanks for the "likes".

Well, as a break from stabbing my finger with a sewing needle as I try to make some sails, last night I finished off the ships boat. I made a small sail and then lashed the mast/spar I made earlier to it.  I also lashed the oars together and finally tied the boat down to the deck support using some eyebolts and Syren hooks, rope and boxwood cleats.  Hope you like the deep red color I chose for the sails.

    Now back to sewing practice.....

    Cheers,

    Nigel.

    Interesting addition to the ship....

A staff member asked me if I knew about the silver owl pin Dr. P always wears on his lapel. I had noticed it but never inquired about it. Turns out, there is a unique story behind it.
This lapel pin was given to Dr. Pillsbury by a few years ago by another patient who is a jeweler.
We all recognize the owl as an iconic symbol of wisdom and knowledge....right?
So when he began wearing it every day, his staff, and then dozens of fellow UNC physicians wanted one of the owl pins as well. Last count, there are over 500 owl pins being worn every day by UNC physicians and nurses.
Understandably, he considers that little owl pin very special.

So, his admin. assistant gave me one of the pins while at my appointment yesterday.
I used it to create a mold and cast this piece, which I painted blue w/black trim.... now mounted as a headfigure on his ship.

I realize these small vessels did not usually, if ever, have carvings on their bow.
    This one does.

    Hi All,

Thanks to all everyone for the kind comments and the likes....I know I am repeating myself here, but all the encouragement is truly appreciated.

So over the past week, I managed to finish off the fore and mizzen mast shrouds.  Exactly the same process was used as for the main mast and thankfully with the practice, things went a bit faster. So, the Dragon's standing rigging is done and now it is on to making the sails...should be fun!

Thanks for reading and pics below as usual.

    Cheers,

    Nigel.

The plans show them more or less straight up perpendicular to the water line. It's also a solid hull so anything is possible

After reading this log for weeks and weeks, I went ahead and ordered your plans and all the other laser-cut goodies that go with it.  It's really a good value.  I looked at other kits that were going to cost a whole lot more, all for a bunch of basswood and thin, warped plywood.  Plus with the instructions and your log here, the building documentation can't get any better.  I've actually agonized over the decision of what kit to get.  The nervous feeling I had in my stomach is now gone....I kid you not.  Thanks so much...for everything about this model ship.  It's going to bring me a lot of fun being able to build this.

i usually dont wear PPE, gloves that can protect against cuts and punctures are very bulky, and can lead to a decresed sense of where your hands, fingers, or the tool is. ive poked and cut myself many times, just part of the learning curve. that being said you can wear as much or as little as you feel necessary.

my dowel pins and drill bits have arrived, so the next step is to secure the deck to the hull, luckily my step father has a drill press,

I once cut the back of my left hand nearly severing the tendon in my left forefinger whilst carving a point on a piece of dowel. A friend was using a craft knife when it fell off the work bench, he went to grab it & pushed it deeply into his thigh, just missing a "vital organ"! Moral always cut away from yourself if possible!
