Yeah, I get the bit about economy .

Anyway, I've fixed the problem - I went through all 9 pages of parts and typed all the part numbers on each sheet into a single column in a Spreadsheet, entering the sheet number in the 2nd column. Then I did a Data-Sort on the part numbers column, split the columns into a Printable Page format and "Bob's your uncle" . I keep each Parts Sheet in a separate sleeve in a clear Display Folder and return the sheet to the sleeve after I cut out the parts I need (at least that's the theory for now ).

I got the two Hagasawa engine kits. The detailing looks good, at least good enough for me.

    Welcome Greg .

There's one thing I've found already that Papershipwright has all over Halinski (apart from the Instructions language of course) - PSW give you two pages of "Parts Identification" for the relatively few parts in the model. This lists the Part Number, a Description of what it actually is in most cases, and WHICH SHEET TO FIND IT ON. It can be very time-consuming finding that one tiny piece of a sub-assembly wading through the 8 sheets of printed Amatsukaze parts. It seems a lot of these assemblies have parts on different sheets .

    Thanks for the comments guys.

I used Spyglass's idea of splitting the "cockroach" one step further. I'd already established that "cz." means "part" and "Sklejamy" is "We glue" - the Polish destructions are full of those words - so I tried "Sklejamy kolo wroty cz." and came up with "We glue the faces" (of 47/50 ) which DOES make more sense than "We glue the cockroaches" .

Using the same idea I broke "dalocelonik" down to "dalo celo nik" which came up with "gave the viewer" (parts 43) - the assembly is a Range-finder .

And I thought that getting into Card Modelling was just all about how to handle thin paper and roll tiny tubes from it . Isn't learning Polish fun .

I've been sitting looking at the capstan and trying to figure out how I'd make it, and all the paths require a lathe and milling machine and rotary table with tailstock and indexing head and possibly custom tapered mills. And at least several complex jigs, most of which would be single use, they'd be made specifically for that capstan. If you're able to do that with only simple tools I'm coming all the way to Spain just to kick you in the shin for being that good.

Rear mast and crane complete. I imagine this would be pretty grubby given it sits right behind the stacks.

    Hi Ken .

What laser marks ? Brilliant laser cutting - no char whatsoever .

Apart from using a scalpel instead of a razor blade, that's exactly what I did too.

Ya gotta love laser-cut frames - how long would it have taken to get this far if I had to laminate and cut heavy card? And it's as straight as a gun barrel .

Hello Everyone,         Here is the latest update.

I've shown a photo of the next pieces of castings that need to be assembled and fitted into place, they were painted, shaped and ready to go. Mark did point out that this was a difficult part of the build and was tricky to get right, I now know what he meant. I had already built up the middle inner section of windows and the side doors, these were in their exact position, the next step was the windows that linked up with the outer cabin windows and the hand rail-balustrade. Each of these needed setting at an angle so that they would not only be in the correct position but that their edges perfectly aligned with each other at the same time. I found that no matter what I did even after bending to shape I could only get them either to align or set them looking ok in the correct position but not both together.

I decided rather than follow the accepted way I would make it easier for myself and fit the outer windows and balustrade in as correct position that I could according to the plan without regard to it aligning with the inner window, this after all is what will mostly be visible. I then fitted the inner cabin window, again without regard to it making contact with the outer windows, but in a position that looked ok, this left a gap of between 2mm-4mm. I made up a piece and glued it into the gap, when painted it looked as if it should be there. I'm pleased with the result and glad that I didn't let myself get frustrated trying to get it absolutely correct. Next I will be making the deck to fit above these cabins.

    Ken

Losing my mind. I could have sworn I posted this same info last nite. At any rate, I'm about to retitle this thread to Finished. I'm waiting a couple more days for spot painting and last minutes fixerups. But I have no more major tasks for this build. I ordered the display case yesterday, should look cool inside it.

Overall this kit was not too bad. The build wasn't overly difficult. Probably to the toughest part was the process for reading the instructions. The kit came with 2 pages of plans, 1 instruction booklet with pix in Italian and a smaller booklet in English that referenced the pix in the big booklet. So I really had to have both open. After I understood what they were trying to tell me the rigging plan made pretty good sense. I do wish they had labeled the various ropes - with the lateen rig I imagine there would be some new terminology.

The rigging was different. Shrouds were cleated rather than terminating in deadeyes & channels. As a matter of fact most all the ropes would feed thru an eyebolt on the rail or deck then tie off to a cleat on deck. This allowed for a certain amount of tightening of the ropes which I liked. So this was my first rigging and first sails. That was one of the goals of this build, so I get a gold star there. The other goal was to go along with the instructions - no bashing. One thing I tried & liked (maybe everyone does this) was painting the finished rigging with matte lacquer. I was hoping it might make the ropes shrink and tighten up a little. It did not do that but it did stiffen everything and I like the result.

Materials were good, I ended up a little short on some of the hardware - had to order some more. Also some of the sticks were shorter than they were supposed to be but I did manage. I would rate this kit slightly above beginner mainly because I was left to figure out a few things and prior experience helped there. But I will recommend it if you are looking for something a little off the beaten path.

This would have been a tough boat to crew. No room for anything. Probably even difficult to stand up and stretch. No wonder they had a hard time mustering a crew.

    So here she is.

The gun platforms for the high angle 76mms and for the other triple 25mm's. I have dry fitted some sandbags around the flat platforms which house the 76mms. Also the amidships searchlight. Lots of small deck details to go.

Weathering on the bridge is done, rust, grime and salt. I reckon I'll just leave it alone now as I'm tempting fate as I'll stuff it completely.

I think these photo etch parts represent some type of sight devices, but no books I have give reference to what exactly they are. Anyone know for sure?
One thing I do know, the parts represent the extreme edge of what I can see to work with. Using magnification, begin to lose my depth perception making the pieces difficult to position. I believe these are perhaps the smallest parts on the photo etch sheets. Any smaller and I will not attempt it. No point really, as I would not be able to see it after the model is finished even if I could.

So, when I was in brass work, I decided to finish the chimney.  I had to combine soldering with tin and silver, which is an incredibly inappropriate combination. Here you can see the result.

To sailor 123456789: I have the same problem to understand this function. The chain pums and main jeer bitts are so close each other and there is no space for manipulation. Above that I made one small mistake, the main jeer bitts are positioned behind the deck beams  (in plans are the main bitts under deck beam). Fortunately on the main jeer bitts end only two ropes.
To John Allen: It is secret. But whoever seeks, he finds it.
The last item on the main deck - brake pumps. They are installed temporarily now. Final fixation will be after deck planking.
