NMBROOK reacted to Kevin in HMS VICTORY by Kevin - FINISHED - Caldercraft - 1/72
After eight months away - the cobwebs have been blown off the Vic and new sits back on the WIP bench - progressed a few other plastic model projects but nothing was finished (my life story), but this this project was always at the back of my mind, just lost the mojo
anyway back to the masting - and placing the deadeyes in their representative strops on the fore mast lower top
hope now to catch up on some of the fantastic build logs here

Not much of an update, but decided to try and replicate the way the blocks are secured onto the lower top, these will be painted - depending on wether i change my mind and try some other way over night

NMBROOK reacted to Kevin in HMS VICTORY by Kevin - FINISHED - Caldercraft - 1/72
]Good evening everyone - briiliant day, but as i have friends who are Australian i will not mention the test match
spent most of the day experimenting - on fitting blocks and doing strops - so although not much progress done - it is getting me into a routine of procedures
tomorrow hope to progress the rest of the foremast - but tonight she looks like this - sorry about the phots

NMBROOK reacted to Kevin in HMS VICTORY by Kevin - FINISHED - Caldercraft - 1/72
still finding my feet again as i well and truly get back into the build
made the spiritsail yard and placed my first line onto the build, hopefully it will still be there tomorrow unless i am told the error of my ways and do it all over again
going by the plans (well that was a stooooopid mistake I drilled the holes but the line fouls the lower cheek so a few holes to patch up - i dont see any other way around it
-
NMBROOK reacted to Kevin in HMS VICTORY by Kevin - FINISHED - Caldercraft - 1/72
did some rigging today,
today feeding lines from the knight-head through single blocks to the dolphin striker, not much achieved but enjoyable
the spiritsail lower yard is temporary pinned to ensure i don't do anything stupid in the months ahead
getting a little confused though how the spirit top saill is going to be fitted, imo the cloth would be snagged by the lines passing through the dolphin striker towards the top of the Jib
anyway - i am sure i will find an answer

NMBROOK got a reaction from cog in MORDAUNT 1681 by NMBROOK - Euromodel - 1:60 - Beyond Bashed
After a little absence,I have something of an update.Aside from very little time,my broadband connection is giving me grief Either lightning fast or more commonly working at a snails past.I shall contact my provider and give them what for when in the right frame of mind.
Anyway, half the deck planked, given a scrape and light sand and then a couple of coats of poly to prevent glue marks whilst working on the other side.I have moved away from shellac as firstly,I like the variation of tones and secondly it means I can use my acrylic ageing techniques should I choose.I am ,due to the pleasing appearance, considering NOT treenailing and risk spoiling the effect.
The other side of the hull is now built and shaped so my next job is to sort the upper gunport frames on this side.
Kind Regards

Final update of the week, back to work tonight
I have cut the lower windows out and removed the obechi strip and cleaned the slot out.I have then fitted a boxwood moulding I machined on the mill using a guide fence. The builders model depicts a central doorway but I am having doors at each end of the balcony.Artistic license has kicked in here.A central door would have spoiled the symmetry and when all said and done,I don't find the stern overly attractive on the builders model.
Kind Regards

Stern counter and area behind balcony now planked in 3mm wide ebony.I have tack glued a strip of obechi in to act as a spacer for where a boxwood moulding will sit. This will be removed when I cut the windows openings out.Doing it this way made it easier to sand, not having to work around a raised moulding

Ok then, milestone finally reached. The square stern has gone hull is now fully faired in preparation for planking.I must fess up,I know I said the build will follow the kit plans, but I will be adding a tweak to the stern to bring it a little more in line with the builders model, the kit quarter galleries will still be used along with most of the kit castings, however the prominent balcony will be incorporated.I am not going to waffle on with the exact details, all will be revealed in due course. Some pics of the shaped hull, upper 'sub' linings to add to the stern chasers then on to planking the counter in Ebony

Hi Mates,
Moving onto the bowsprit mast, first update.
Thought that I would try to seam together two mast pieces as was done on the 1:1.
Pics are self explanatory but some thoughts;
• Pic 5, 6. Drilled holes so that when I sawed both inside cheeks the center-piece would fall out more easily. And so it did sort of.
• Pic 11- are the first two attempts with my first use of Proxxon KS-15 circular saw. (tried to use the scroll saw but broke two blades, after very little progress).
Purchased a second 50mm fine tooth saw for the KS-15 circular saw. I originally tried the 58mm saw that came pre-installed. That was much too ruff (see pic 11 below). The finer saw made much smoother cuts
• Also used the Proxxon DS-115 scroll saw to “clean” the insides a bit better, for that it worked well.
After much filing it seems to look as if the first part might look ok. Though it still needs a bit of work.
I have not quite mentally figured out how to mate/sleeve the long mast
To be continued J
Cheers, and thanks for stopping by.
Michael

NMBROOK reacted to UpstateNY in Red Dragon by UpstateNY - FINISHED - Artesania Latina - Scale 1:60
Hi All,
Janet's mention in her post above that she is rigging her tiller reminded me I also needed to assemble the rudder and tiller as I am getting pretty close to no longer being able to easily invert my Dragon.
I had previously made up the rudder assembly by planking and tree nailing the laser cut former and making up the post using 5mm walnut strips. The tiller was a laser cut part so after cleaning off the char, I drilled out a recess using my Dremel so I could attach the rudder assembly. I added a small walnut piece to the top of the tiller to simulate a through tenon for the rudder post. Brass was used to form the tiller posts for the rigging as well as the larger rod that supports the rudder on the deck. Just for fun, I also added a brass rod to "pin" the tenon. Test assembly showed everything seems to fit OK so I just need to blacken the brass and give the wood a coat of poly before gluing everything in place.
Thumbnails below...thanks for reading.
Cheers,
Nigel.

NMBROOK got a reaction from Canute in La Belle Poule 1765 by AntiSpiral - 1/48 - An Adventure in POB
I am sorry to hear of your troubles Peter.I am kind of stuck in limbo myself, until we get moved I cannot get properly settled down in to any of my builds.
My best advice would be to store the model safely in the meantime even if you have to knock up a solid box to put it in.The time will come when you can throw yourself back into the build. The most disheartening thing is to have a part built or complete model damaged when moving things about.
Kind Regards

Thank you dear friends,
your words mean a lot for me and I am really very honoured. I also thank you warmly for awesome inspiration I find here in your build logs. I admire your work on ship models a lot.
Royal Caroline is my newest and concurrently best model I have built, but I must admit, there are some of details and things, that could be made better. So I will have an occasion to find new ways, how to improve the work at my future scratch builds.Royal Caroline is exposed together with Sovereign of the seas at the nicest place in the room, where we have more than 30 ship models. This is my most favorite room in our house.
Kind regards
Doris
