NMBROOK got a reaction from daveward in Plank Width for Spiled Planks
After looking at pics of your kit,i would say possibly 3 sheets for the second planking plus the kit strips. There is a possible pitfall to this,I personally think you will struggle to match the supplied walnut. The Amati walnut is a European variety and I can't find sheet stock to match it and I live in Europe.
My advice would be to use the supplied kit first planking and maybe buy some sheet stock for the bow if you are determined to spill the first layer.I would then give serious thought to replacing the second planking completely. The timber will then match, but also you have the opportunity to change to pear or box. They are both more resilient to breaking than walnut,a problem that can occur when cutting curved shapes(i.e. your planks)out and then bending.

    Hi Dave

I ordered the widest sheets of Pear available (75mm) for Nuestra. You can then 'nest'the shaped planks side by side with a small gap to save material. My second planking is only 4mm max wide on Nuestra, but the last one I cut for the bow is probably 40mm wide across the corners!!

Yes Bill,I did think you may do that and I must say it does look good and is certainly a plausible possibility.

I doubt anyone will have these,to my knowledge they were never available seperately and as the Mamoli factory went up in smoke, the only option would be to get a half built model and cannibalise it for them.
Personally though, having seen many Mamoli builds,I think these gunports can be more of a curse than a blessing.Your better option would be to make some wooden boxes up and glue one side to the bulkhead. This will make sanding the hull easier and you are not dictated by the tab positions, from what I have seen, rarely do these line up like the manufacturer intended.

Very much depends on the shape of the bow Dave, for the central section of the hull, the kit planking is adequate, this will follow the slight bend caused by the sheer. You only need to spil the bow area and possibly some of the stern(especially if it has a round tuck). What vessel are you building, that would give a better idea of the shapes involved?

    Jan,

I have been thinking about your post, interesting information. I am still vacillating back and forth regarding the sails. Though I have, finally decided to have them sewn by a "third party". Well I did buy the material and thread.

After, if I think that they look good enough, I will possibly move forward adding them to the masts before installation. I certainly have several excellent build logs to refer to for guidance.

PS: I'm a Libra so it is almost impossible to make decisions about anything ha ha

As is sometimes the case with our builds, looking back-we sometimes wish we had taken more time and done things differently. After spending, going on three years on this one, I just bet that once finished I would regret not having challenged myself further by not adding sails.

    Cheers,

    Michael

The small deck extension is now being planked in Holly with a new front trim glued in place.

Thanks so much Nigel. Just when I had almost made up my mind to be historically accurate, you've gone and made me rethink it again.

She is looking grand Mark         The rudder is just a minor setback,I have the utmost respect for you for going ahead and reworking it.It makes me think, back in the day before internet forums, you just used to see pics of completed models in books and magazines and the reader assumed wrongly that everything went smoothly with the build.I wonder how many were discouraged when their efforts didn't meet muster the first time around?
I now view a project as just that,to build a model of 'X',whatever has to find it's way in the scrap bin between start and completion is immaterial

    Excellent work Frank

I beg to differ with Druxey,Vertical scarphs for English ships, but the French scarphed keels horizontally,as this ship was built in Quebec, the latter style may have had some influence in design.

    Piet,
I find that making that decision to re-do is getting easier and easier.  It's almost scary how easy it is to say "yup.. not good" and rip it out.

Welcome aboard, John.  No permission needed.  Somewhere in this mess is a popcorn machine from Sjors and some cold adult beverages.

This truly is a learning build.  I thought Version 1.0 was the learning version.. not so.  It taught me some things but this one is teaching me more.  If someone at some point down the road picks up on one of my mistakes and then does not make that same mistake, this log will have been worth it.

    Nigel,
I daresay you are correct.   The books never discussed the "scrap bin" or why it got full.

Well, the fun continues.  The wood has been milled to thickness and I'm cutting the 3 parts for the rudder and fitting them.  Pictures when I get something to show.

Looking good Bill The penny has now dropped exactly the direction you are taking with this area Are you planning on leaving the 'slats' as is or are you going to add pieces to form an actual grating?
