    Hello,

it is done, the floorcloth is in! That was a whole weekend of concentrating drawing, redrawing and making new.

The for part of the quarter deck is also mainly ready.

    Regards,
    Siggi

I hope I understand correctly - if not, I would appreciate having my error pointed out.
As I understand it, a 'rolling bevel' means that the bevel on the planks is not fixed to a specific angle, but gradually changes from none mid-ship to almost 90 degrees at bow and stern - hence it is rolling along the edge of the plank?

I have been quietly following your log, and have been truly inspired by it.  Maybe one day I will attempt something similar.

Done! Finished! I finished the model finally!

The flags were the final touch.
I re-painted them with acrylic paint in order to let be "less shiny".
Now it will take some time to pack all the tools and accessories used during this year...
I made a bit more photo than usual, just to show better the final appearance of the model.
The last photo shows its final positioning in the wall niche.

Landrotten Highlander got a reaction from Izzy Madd in Billing No.514 Niels Juel
I plucked this info from a Dutch forum.  The person building it had contacted Billing Boats in order to obtain building instructions in pdf.

This is the discription as per forum modelbouwers.nl
    'Quote:'

    Translated it says:
The Danish Fishing vessel Niels Juel H 137 was built in 1887 in Gilleleje (north east coast of Seeland) in the shipyard of Ferdinand Carlsen & David Anderson for Theodor Wassard from Kobenhavn (Kopenhaven).
It measured 37 voet (ca. 11 m) lang, had a displacement of 16,5 ton and was clinker (klinker?) built . Originally fitted with 1 main sail, staysail, 3 jibs and a topsail.  This was later changed to 1 mainsail and 1 staysail, which is the basis of this model
In 1906 an 8pk petrol engine was fitted.
It was sold to a fish smoking and exporting buisiness from Gilleleje in 1931, and resold again to a local scipper  in 1934.
On 9th of april 1940 the Niels Juel sank on a trip carrying political refugees from Denmark to Sweden in the ice covered Öresund after being attacked by the German Wehrmacht.

had a similar bad experience with computers.  My external hard drive packed in - one of its heads dropped off.  5000 pictures, 7 years of notes and some development documents lost for ever, and I did not have back-up of them, didn't think is necessary at the time.  Know better now.

Anyway, wish you all the strength to get back on the right track and to continue this log.

Thank you everybody for the smart and "silent" support!
    Thank you JesseLee!

In these days I am very busy with work and the progress on the model is proceeding very slowly (well, just like observing a glacier movement!! )
I almost completed the standing rigging of the mizzen mast.
After many afterthoughts, I finally decided to don't use the deadeyes for the mizzen top-mast shrouds.
After checking contemporary models, paintings, drawings I decided that they were not used on these small ships, in that position of the mast and in that part of the Mediterranean basin. I used instead the heart type ones.
Since I added the mizzen top-mast stay, now I can add the blocks to it, too.
I finally decided to not add the rope ladder that almost reach the top of the main mast.
The presence of the ladder will add more mess in an already messy deck...
In addition, it must be considered that I am too lazy to make it, too...

    Hello, dear friends!
Thank you for your kind words and support.
I appreciate your comments very much.

The five "Baille à Drisse" I have finished in the meantime.
To get an idea, I have placed the five container on the deck.

    Hi Albert,
thank you for the nice comment.

So it goes on with the construction report.

To rig the 18 pounder I'm still researching on with respect to the breeching ropes. Was this right laid or left laid?
In the meantime, I'm doing the "Baille à Drisse", some sort of container for
coiling of ropes, such as the topsail-haylard.
On the French Corvette was thereof a total of 5 units available. 2 pieces each in front of the foremast and the mainmast and 1 piece in front of the mizzen mast.
Here I show the detail of the plan by J. Boudriot.

This is an example of this container on the model of the Belle Poule from the Musée national de la Marine in Paris.

For the French corvette I make the container of sheet brass. The upper and lower parts were etched. The drawing for the film I made myself. The etching is done by a service provider.
After assembly, the part is still burnished. But thereof next time more.

    COMPLETING 2D PARTS

Progression continues, 2D portion is now completed.  I tried to do it in 1 block. This way it is easier to have the same style in the carvings. To give a bigger volume to the 2D parts, many were cut in a thicker plank than require (especially the flowers) in a way, trying to make it look  bit more 3D than it is really.

Some parts were directly made from the plans, other were made according the place  on the exact place where i twill be install on the model. This way the parts fits before to be carved.

Remaining sculptures  are 3D noted in red on the original drawings. On the first picture.

On the second picture, 4 pictures regrouped to give an idea of the progression of the construction; which is similar in many ways to a house : framing, walls, moldings and decoration on the other pics.
The third pic is to show how to work standing  having every thing at the good height.

Landrotten Highlander got a reaction from AON in bandsaw questions
I suspect it could be your setup.  From my engineering experience, a bandsaw that has the supports spaced wide apart will tend to create an irregularly (i.e. not straight) cut.

As per HSE guidelines, the upper support of the bandsaw (= the two rollers where the blade runs in between) needs to be as close to the workpiece as is practicable.  That way the working part of the blade (i.e. that part of the saw where the actual cutting takes place) will be as small as possible and therefore as stiff as possible.

Having said that, I am uncertain of many hobby bandsaws offer that option.

Landrotten Highlander got a reaction from Q A's Revenge in Scale plank lengths or use a full-length strip?
I think it depends on the type of build.
I building a plank on frame then scale planking will work (plenty of frames to position the buts on.
With a plank on bulkhead one might find that scale planking stops in the (empty) space between bulkheads.
