Two things I find consistent in your log:
    1) Your work is always absolutely beautiful, precise and educational.
    2) I am never disappointed when I stop by!

    Part 94 – Main Deck Framing 5

Because the main deck framing supports the mast partners, knees are installed as reinforcements at the partners.  I also installed them at the hatchway openings.  I made these as overlapping knees.  I did not go to this trouble for the lodging knees at the side because their fore and aft arms are not visible on the model.  I do not yet know if these central knees will be covered with decking or not.  The first picture shows some of these knees before installing.

The next picture shows a few installed at the main mast partners and at the hatch just aft of this.

I installed these central knees first before going on to the major task of setting all of the ten dozen or so lodging knees at the sides.   The next picture shows this lodging knee installation proceeding aft from the bow.

The next picture shows a closer view of this work.

This is one type of lodging knee combination used on these ships and is the one I used on all of the decks.  It is the simplest – with the fore and aft arms simply butting.  They will be covered by the waterways in any case.  In the picture a knee is being marked so it can be cut to fit neatly between its partner and the beam.  Bolts are then installed, the knee is polished up and then glued in.

The next picture shows all of the main deck lodging knees installed.

And, finally, a picture of the full hull at this stage.

The next step will be to install the ledges between each of the beams to complete the framing of this deck.

Main Lower Shrouds and Burton Pendants

I've fitted all the Main Lower Shrouds. The foremost one is served all over, and the others are served for the uppermost quarter.

The Burton Pendants are slipped over the mast head before fitting any of the Shrouds. These are used for heavy lifting of any cargo, in conjunction with other rigging on the yards. They have a Thimble spliced into their lower ends, and are made up as a pair with a Cut Splice around the mast :

The foremost shroud is a single and also uses a cut splice to connect the port and starboard shrouds :

The rest of the shrouds are paired on each side as were the mizzen shrouds. This pic shows all the shrouds fitted around the mast head :

    The deadeyes and lanyards :

An overall pic of the rigging so far :

As promised gents here is my latest update.

SHE IS FINISHED, well to be truthful she has been for the last two weeks but I have been waiting for the display case to arrive, no luck yet so I'll post without the case and base.

I want to thank everybody who has followed this build and those who pressed the like button, to get 75,500+ hits has really taken me back and I thank you all for the support, help comments and advice, there has been plenty along the way and it's all been good.

This will be last big build for a couple of reasons, the first being space, I don't have enough space at home to display them properly, the museum has taken the smaller ships but it still leaves me with a problem, secondly is the repetitive work that these big ships require, there's a huge amount of planking, plating, gun making and gun rigging and so it goes on, so from now on it's only small stuff.

Hopefully this will be a one time only event, but I have a few shots of my first build, HM Brig Badger alongside Agamemnon, both are 1/64 scale and the difference is really surprising. Badger took me 4 months from start to finish and the Aggy has taken 19 1/2 months.

Anyway enough talk, lets see the pics, first up the two together.

I'm going to close this post and I'll open another with just the Agamemnon, I hope you enjoy these shots.

So there we go, all done. I hope those who followed enjoyed the journey and I thank you again for your help and support.

See you all in the next log I hope, that will be opened on Saturday. For those that don't already know it's the 1/48 scale Bomb Vessel Granado cross section. This is a scratch build so I'm venturing into dark and unknown side of this hobby, not on my own I might add, Grant and Jack Panzeca will be taking the journey with me, should be fun.

So for now I'll say adios amigo's, see you soon.

Finally a bit of an update!
First photo shows some shaped pieces at the bow. In my eagerness to finish and install these and the fancy trim overlay, I forgot to take pictures and these pieces are virtually hidden now!

Next up were the catheads and trim, made from basswood square stock.

I used copper sheet to cut strips and fashion the brackets that hold the catheads down.

    Everything is assembled.

Then installed on the model. I used copper wire to simulate bolts.

Here's a bow shot with catheads installed and bow braces and trim pieces.

This picture shows the copper brackets blackened with liver of sulphur. I used EdT's method of soaking them in acetone first, to clean and remove any coating that may have been present. Then I dipped a small paint brush in dilute liver of sulphur and applied to the brackets in situ, followed by a water rinse - it worked like a charm!

    Just a slightly different angle.

    That's it for now.

Lawrence - not sure that 19 years counts as "speedy completion", but thank you for kind words anyway.

Nice to see you back and posting again Sherry - thought you'd gone AWOL for a while there. I'll look forward to some updates on your lovely San Felipe.

The sails and the yards on the main mast are also in place...

Still the fore mast to go and the bowsprit yards.
And then all the rigging that goes with it.
It keeps me still busy for the time being.......

    Working on the masts here.

Just put the dead-eyes in place and now have to urethane the masts. Then probably the biggest challenge of all - the rigging.

    Another small update.....

New additions include the vertical strips of wood on the hull mid-ship. I'm not sure of the name or function of these timbers, but I'm wondering if they could be for protection of the hull when the lowering of the ship's boats?

Also added are more ornamentation pieces, such as the eagles and the piece at the top of the gallery door.
Now to make these same pieces for the port side.

    Hi Guys,

Just a quick update to let you know that I haven't fallen of the planet.

Rigging continues, all the main yards are made painted and fitted, the rigging is now completed on the main as far as I want to go at least at this moment in time.

I thought I would be clever and just put pegs on the ropes before tying off, so with all the yards rigged and a multitude of pegs hanging came the first headache.
I ended up almost making lace, the pegs got spun around each other and so the lace making had begun, the second headache was once all the lines were untangled where the hell do they go, they are all now tied of and trimmed so lessen learned, tie of as you go and avoid a whole lot of headache pills.  It still isn't getting any easier tying around the belaying pins, even with the approved tools and a few homemade efforts.

Next job is to make the fore and sprit yards, this will be done over the next day or so.

I have a few pics to show and as usual please give your honest thoughts and opinions, all are welcome.

These are the main yards prior to painting

    Lace making

As I have said all these lines are now fixed and trimmed but no pics yet.

Thank you for dropping in again Remco, Nils and Ben .

    Lower Masts

Sometime soon I'm going to need the Masts for alignment purposes to go ahead with fitting the deadeyes to the channels. Up until now I've "made do" with a couple of "dummy" masts, but now it's time to make the real things .

I was lucky to buy one of the last of the Masting Packages for the "Swans" from Hobbymill about a year or so ago. As usual, Jeff's timber and packaging is EXCELLENT - there are TWO pieces supplied for every part needed in case of "oopsies" (I've already made one ).

The masts (and just about everything else) starts out as square stock - no dowels in this lot, that would have been counter-productive . Following usual practice for making "round" masts from square stock I marked out two sides with the taper required. I've also tapered the masts below deck as per the original. The pic below shows the marking out for the section between the Partners and the Heel :

After tapering these two faces with a chisel and sandpaper I marked out the other two and tapered them as well. Then I marked out each face for the edges where the "octagonalling" would finish. I cut the tapered square section into a tapered octagon using a "V" jig and a sharp chisel :

Then I rounded the octagon using a sanding block, and cut the lower tenon into it :

The Mast Head remains square for now - much more work to be done here later :

Fore and Main Lower Masts fitted to the ship :

Note - I had to make two Main Masts (the oopsie mentioned earlier). I'd made the main mast a bit too thin at the partners on the 1st one and wasn't happy with the result. Just as well that Jeff had supplied plenty of timber .

Hi Sjors.........  I'm still here  ..... I'll have an update soon ( I hope !! )..... I've been really busy trying to finish up planking the hull, I've got one more band to do p&s, then I'll be finished. I have to do this while I'm still in the planking mood or else  I'll never get finished . so hang in there,...... in the famous words of our beloved Gen. D. MacArthur... "I shall return".. I don't know when , but I will
