newbuilder101 reacted to Dan Vadas in HMS Vulture 1776 by Dan Vadas - FINISHED - 1:48 scale - 16-gun Swan-class sloop from TFFM plans
Thanks again Druxey, David and John.
Quarter Pieces
The Quarter Pieces on most Swan Class Sloops are elaborately carved, but the sheer plan of Vulture shows very plain ones. Whether this is correct or not I don't know - perhaps the draughtsman was just lazy . I've treated them in similar fashion to the Pilasters of the Quarter Badges and Stern Lights.
To overlap the joints between the hull planking and counter planking I hollowed out the pieces :
Some progress pics through the stages of fitting them up :

Thanks yet again, everyone. Your comments are always most welcome and appreciated.
Sherry, the workshop has actually become "the shipyard" in everyday speak around here. Your comment is apt. One of the things I like about building the ship upright from the bottom up is that I get to ask myself questions like, "How did they drill those long holes in that confined space?" Of course all this effect is lost when I have to invert the model to file off boltheads on the bottom.
Andy, thanks for he input on the tank issue. I had assumed, as did my source (Mr. Crothers in this case) that these tanks would have been baffled internally regardless of the design. However, maybe not, and perhaps that is the reason for the tall columns vs short broad hold tanks. I'm not sure where the hull center of gravity is. Perhaps not much of the water is above it. I'll tke a pass on your offer of more information and move on to he next problem. Had enough fluid mechanics for one lifetime.
David, thanks for the suggestion but I will pass on that too. I don't want to further expose how little I know about the subject.

Hi all,
Another trip to Sydney this weekend meant not much time in the shipyard, but on the plus side, I was allowed to go back to my favourite toy store (Carbatec) and buy the 10" bandsaw I'd been eyeing off!
We came home on Saturday night, so I did get to turn to in the shipyard for a while today. Managed to finish off and install the Driver Boom and Gaff. No particular difficulties here. The kit plans were close again, and only needed a little modification with the assistance of Longridge.
Here are some overall shots of the day's work:
It's on to Bow lines next, then Sheets, Tacks and Braces. I'm taking a few days off work from Easter through to Anzac Day, so will end up with a 10 day break. Hopefully, this will give me the time I need to finish off the running rigging. Then it will be Boats, Anchors and housekeeping only left to go. Did I say "only"???????

The gun port liners are almost done, but to break up the monotony I started working on the decorative frames for the upper gun ports. The starboard side is finished and I'm almost finished the port side.

When I stop by your log I feel that I am in an actual shipyard viewing a real ship taking form! Beautiful work!

Four more stern decorations have been added. The little figures with the dolphins are not much bigger that my thumb nail and I think I may be permanently cross-eyed now from working on them!

Every part you make has such clean and crisp lines - amazing! You really do "Treat each part as if it is a model on its own"

Thanks for looking in again, and the nice comments Geoff, Brian, Ben, John and Spyglass.
Sorry about that Spyglass, I didn't realize that you were up to the same stage . Besides, the construction of your Pegasus is quite a bit different to mine . You're doing a fine job.
Ensign Staff Block and Clamp
There are a few more things on the taffarel that need doing prior to fitting the assembly to the ship. One of these is the Block and Clamp that hold the Ensign Staff, enabling it to be easily removed.
The block is stepped into the fore edge of the taffarel and has two small molded sections at it's ends,
The clamp is very similar to a Gun Trunion Cap, so I simply used a slightly modified spare that I had (I only had to enlarge the diameter of the half-hole slightly) :
