    Update....

the first promenade deck cabin section is so far complete....

the handrails worked out fine, was easier than I thought it to be......, and this time the railholders had flattened ends before bending the holding loop for the rail was bent, (thanks to suggestion of member "Reklein", Bill in Idaho )

Just thought I would share these incredible pictures of the figurehead for the Swan Class Sloop "Atalanta" by David Antscherl.  The figure is boxwood with a stem of swiss pear.  The brackets and trailboard carving are also boxwood.   Note the gold leafed apples.  Just stunning carving by hand and almost hard to believe possible at this scale.  Its so tiny.   I love the facial expression.....Mona Lisa smirk...    Enjoy!!!

The glass dome is just 4" in diameter.

    Thank you all!

The report for the construction of the French Corvette goes on as follows:
With the production of the cover for the hammocks I had begun some time ago. First, I made the Hammocks cranes.
    See here LINK !
In the further progress I make the wooden mold, which was then coated with the canvas of fine fabrics.

    Please Look at the pictures:

lagrayjr got a reaction from rek in HMS Naiad 1797 by GDM67 - 1:60 - using Ed Tosti Books
Gary, I strongly recommend that you secure the keel to your building board by bolts through the keel as suggested by Ed Tosti. The pipe clamps that you are using will get in your way as you progress building the frames. Eventually they will all have to be removed. In addition the wires you're using to stabilize the frames will be of great help  however, they will get in your way and have to be removed when you start working on the internal structures and gun ports. You will have to stabilize the ship using the heights of breath externally. This requires the keel to be firmly attached to your building board. Ed discusses this in one of his later post but I cannot remember exactly where it's located. I am currently building the Naiaid and am just finishing the lower deck. I hope this suggestion will keep you out of a significant problem later on. Great build and I am enjoying watching it. Laman

I've been diligently working while continuing to dig for information.  I've looked at what seems to be a zillion plans, paintings, sketches, etc. online of French frigates...   this darned ship's galleries don't match any of them.  There's a couple of other odd things I noticed but since the NMM plans have them, I have to assume that the guys in the yard taking the lines, etc. knew what they were doing and drew what they saw in front of them..  My eyes are killing me from staring at the computer and the NMM plans...  Aspirin helps.

I've reworked the roof to match the lines (and this time allowed for tolerances and my own stupidty) and then stained it black.  I momentarily thought about using ebony but 1) didn't have the proper size stock and 2) didn't want to deal with the mess.   I've reworked the rail/decorations.  These appear to be more decorative than an actual railing so I'm cutting the pieces as individuals and will fit them as I go.

In the pics, one set of decorations has been cut and etched on 1/32" (<1mm) Euro Boxwood.  The other still needs cutting but I need to thickness another chunk of wood for that as i wasted a bit getting the settings right on the cutter.  There will be a black covering board for the roof top with a piece of boxwood trim around it.

Well.... here goes....  wish me luck as I dive off the deep end.  I hope there's water in the pool... metaphorically speaking.

Here's a small update on Speedwell. Her main deck has been completely framed with beams, carlings, ledges hanging and lodging knees. That was rather routine but boring work which occupied me for a few months. As a change of pace I made most of the deck fittings but none are permanently affixed as yet. Currently, I am working on the capstan and have just finished the tapered barrel.

Just a tip for you novices regarding gratings. Ideally they should have full courses all around (see photos). It is easier to cut your gratings to the the size that accomplishes this first. Then build your coamings around them. If the result is a gratings assembly that is a hair larger or smaller than the plan so be it.

    Postscript:

Since the last posting there have been revisions! The sweeps were discovered to be sized for a single-banked boat not, as in this case, for a double-banked one. So, a new set of 12 sweeps have been made, 15' 0" as opposed to 19' 0". I also took this opportunity to paint the dolphins on one side the correct way up! Now, at the risk of incurring the wrath of the moderators, I'd like to mention that the full story, along with various techniques of making small open boats will appear in a full-color book shortly. Stay tuned!

Again, my thanks to all who contributed to this log. You helped to make a better model.

The next equipment parts of the French corvette is a cover for spare masts and spare spars. The weatherproof cover is a canvas, which was painted with tar. This canvas is mounted on fork-shaped iron and been completed front and back by a board.

    + modification on molding knife;

    handle for the blade
sometimes we see a  handle on the opposite side, it is a bit more performant
    amelioration of the down force on the blade : try  for a handle at 90 degres of the blade, allows direct counterforce on the blade;
much easier to make the molding

lagrayjr reacted to trippwj in Advice for consolidated listing of resources
Greetings all.  I have been gathering links to a wide variety of resources (old and new) available on the internet for use in model building.  These range from scanned treatises from the 16th century (the oldest I currently have is from 1578) to available academic research (including theses and dissertations). Topics range from ship specific (such as the US Frigate Constellation) to highly generic (such as period treatises on rigging).  I am contemplating posting these links to a website that I can update periodically, rather than continuing to update my posts here on MSW.

Where i could use your help is, first, in getting a feel for whether you would use such a site, and second in deciding the best way to organize the website - I will not be uploading the actual documents, but rather a brief description with a link to the URL to access the document.  Would it be more useful to be organized by subject (such as Dutch Shipbuilding; Masts and Rigging; Naval Architecture; Early American Frigate documents) or in some other manner?  How would you want to be able to find the desired information on such a site?

CAVEAT - I know NOTHING about web design, and am going to be learning as I go, so keep any advice on the structure and so on for a neophyte with little or no knowledge!

    Many thanks!

    Hello,
    Mark and Charles,
thanks for the acclaim and all for LIKES.

    I almost forgot small details.
This gig had aft four sheaveholes. Presumably that were there to
sailing and for the rudder of the gig.

The sheaves have a diameter of 2 mm and a thickness of 0.45 mm and are made of brass.

    Hello,
thanks to everyone for the interest.
Here are the latest fitting parts for the rudder, the thwarts and the eyebolt to see before they are burnished.

The last picture shows the thwart with the already installed holder. The side panels in the bow area, which also form the conclusion of the grating are still missing.
