HereHere's the update: Marked the butts and treenails on deck,, cut and set up the gunports port side, started the house front.(still working on it). Next stop will probably be the waterways...studying placement of the quarterdeck. Any suggestions or observations will be appreciated. Slàinte Paul -

Fair American stern construction

The J Long build log was best. Showed a lot of stern detail...I think I had it right, but it looked goofy to me especially with the trim pieces p/s. I sanded them down considerably so they didn't stick out as much. The kit was purchased in a bundle from a guy cleaning out the ship locker. 2 boxes of wood planks etc, and 2 kits: Pride of Baltimore ( completed) and Fair American. Parts are missing so I have to purchase from Model Expo. I have the plans and the Ronnberg book. I've had to take a six year hiatus from shipbuilding due to a quite serious motorcycle accident which left me minus a leg. I feel like Captain Ahab with shipbuilding as Moby Dick. So I really appreciate this forum and the assistance of other members. So thanks, mates.

Model Shipways Fair American. I bought the kit on ebay in a bundle. I guess a guy was cleaning out his ship locker .Some parts are missing of course, but I think I can manage. Running into a major snag with the stern construction.I can't seem ro figure out what the side trim pieces are doing there and how to planking. So I put balsa filler blocks P/S, but it still looks goofy,, The plans are a bit unclear....I'm attaching a photo. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. I used carpenters glue so I can take it apart if I need to... Ahoy! My Fair American was apparently an attic clean out when I bought it ,Pride of Baltimore and two boxes of planks etc.Having a bit of a hoolie with the stern assembly with the fouŕ internal supports.I found the drawings to be of. little help. I need to get on top of this before I can proceed .Any insight or fotos will be appreciated . Thanks mate.

Started Fair American. Planking the hull is completed with filler blocks stem and stern. The instructions I find a bit confusing as regards the stern. Some plans show the extensions ( 4 precut pieces in the kit). Others do not.Can anyone tell me which way to go? Thanks and Smooth Sailing Paul Thompson The Town Piper

Hola Karl I'm stumped as to the throat and peak halyard rigging...all my ships have been square riggers. can you send me a close-up pic of the fore and mainmast throat/peak halyard rigs? I have a thread going: Pride of Baltimore with sails-townpiper. Muy obligado Muchas Gracias Pablo aka townpiper

Thanks. All of my models have been square riggers, so I'm baffled about throat halliards. I rigged the treble block on a pendant. The plans show 2 lines on either side of the block one ending in a tackle- I have no idea how these attach to the block... belayed to an eyebolt on the rail. Do the lines go thru a sheave to the boom or is there another type of arrangement like a ring on the block to allow passage of the line? Then the sheave lanyards...do they attach to a double block on the boom and then to rings on the boom or go allthe way down to the deck? I'm baffled... Thanks

Pride of Baltimore with sails

Greetings Paul I understand that you've sailed on her. I'm stumped about rigging the peak and throat halliards on the gaffs. The MSW plans show a treble block on a pendant around the mast with ropes extending from either side. Rigging the blocks is not the problem...it's the two ropes on the sides: why are they thereand how do they attach to the block...also where do they belay? Can you give me some guidance here? Thanks and fair winds to ya. Happy New Year...it's gotta be better than 2021... Cheers Paul Thompson aka townpiper.

Topsail schooner sail plans and rigging
townpiper replied to Dr PR's topic in Masting, rigging and sails
Doc I'll try to send a photo of MSW's POB plans for peak and throat halliards. Some of it is clear and understandable but the throat halliard has me stumped...looks like the halliard lines go around the throat block (triple sheave) not through the sheaves...makes no sense to me. Must be missing something. The lanyard goes thru the sheaves and I assume through another trip block someplace on the deck. MSW leaves you to guess where the block should be placed. Can you shed some light on this? Thanks doc...Clears it up for me.. Cheers- 104 replies

Topsail schooner sail plans and rigging
townpiper replied to Dr PR's topic in Masting, rigging and sails
Greetings doc Re: MSW Pride of Baltimore with sails I'm stuck on the throat halliard rig...MSW's plans call for a triple sheave throat block seized around the mast. The lines seem to go around this block- the lanyard goes thru the 3 sheaves and one would assume through another trip block someplace on the deck . If I can figure out how to attach a pic, I'll send a copy of the plan. Hope you can shed some light on this. Thanks k ...- 104 replies
