xken got a reaction from coxswain in New Armed Long Boat Kit Released by Model Shipways - 1/24 scale
Here are some additional pictures for a better look at it. The decorations are P.E. brass. This is targeted for those wanting to get into boat building and learn some of the techniques of building. The challenge for me to to build it using no machines and doing everything by hand as a novice might have to just getting started.

    Thank you, everyone!

Ccoyle, that’s incredibly helpful! Looks like the club has a meeting this week. Hopefully I can swing by and check it out.

Xken, it’s a great looking kit and excellent to know there are figures available as well. It’s be great to combine both hobbies when I can.

Well, you all have me tempted to start with something a bit more ambitious. I plan to order a kit in the next few weeks... so I’ll have to mull my choice over a bit more. 🙂

Great painting on the figures! The armed longboat would be a good choice given the scale and Shapeways has naval figures the same scale. It would be a good choice and I did design the kit with beginners in mind. All the plans are full scale as well so no conversions needed. Welcome aboard!

Here is are pictures of the figures available. Here is one painted and the others as they came from Shapeways. I had to break a couple of legs to get them to fit properly.

Here are the raw figures; the guy at the rudder had his legs broken to set on the deck.

I am sure you could do a much better job at painting these guys than I did. That would be a great painting tutorial for you to post at some time.

Dan, great job on the boats! I have been side tracked on the Detroit by a couple of commissions. Keep up the great work you are doing.

Dave, that could be slim pickings but if you have any questions just let me know. Keep in mind I will be out of the loop between July 19 - Aug. 7 and not sure about communications. I will be delivering the Constitution to my son in Southold, Long Island. A long drive from Morro Bay,Ca. 6130 miles round trip.

Dave, don't forget to add the forward line to the eyebolt on the channel.; every fifth ratline extends to it. But I am sure you are aware of this.

Here are pictures of the finished brig other than a couple of paint touch ups here and there. Being my first ship build I learned quite a few lessons that will certainly benefit future builds. I plan on building the USS Constitution and will do a little more research and study the plans before starting the build.

I would also like to thank those that provided both guidance and encouragement during this build.

Here are a random sampling of overall and detail pictures.

Thanks for all your kind words! We are having a great time with the twin boys, they are bundles of non stop energy in every direction and extremely smart. They love being in the pool especially with the heat and humidity. We are really going to miss them. Alex enjoys getting mom’s smart phone and dialing FaceTime with us. He did this a couple of times when we were traveling here. Tyler on the other hand is an eating machine and has no problem downing his food at meal time.
Thanks again for your kind comments.

Jonathan, it is easy just requires patience and the right tools. For example I cannot imagine building this ship without my lathe and mill setup.
Michael thanks and second Michael, if I had known grand kids were so much fun I would have had them first.

I have completed the basic fabrication of all the yards and  booms identified on the plans with respective ironwork. When I got to the smaller yards I had to change to 3/32" rings soldered with .020" rod for the correct scale. The inner rings were soldered together with no post necessary due to size and end rings rod was just bent to fit the hole in the end strap.

I also used 3/32" tube to align the rings to the yards end to end as shown below.

Here is a family portrait of the yards, studding sail booms and studding sail yards.

Now I will start rigging the yards do do as much as possible prior to mounting to the masts. I am also going to add a removable 1/32" locating pin to the center of the yard to index into the mast to aid in rigging.

I understand that the studding sail yards were attached to their respective sail and rigged to a block at the end of the studding sail boom.

Now for the magic question that I have searched for to no avail..."How are the studding sail booms rigged? I have no reference on the plans, or the Anatomy book on how these were rigged even though the plans show two holes drilled at 90 degrees in the inboard ends. Does anyone know how these were rigged or lashed or moved trough the rings on the yards, I cannot imagine that these were moved by hand?

I am hoping someone with more rigging knowledge or reference sources than I can help.

Finished up all the yards with all the jackstays and used 28 gauge brass wire stretched and indexed through the jackstays. Then cut, tapered and stained the studding sail booms and yards. Not sure if I will need the yards because I think they may be attached to the sails themselves.
I then made the first set of studding sail booms hardware. The brass rings needed to be both drilled and then turned down to the sizes need from rod. The inside ring was located and glued in place first so that the end rings could be sized and located using the booms themselves. The following pictures show the process.

Now that I have the first set sorted out on to making the rest. These will be stained/painted black once all are completed.

Arrived at son’s house with no issues with the ship. It did not move at all. The roughest roads were coming off the George Washington bridge with some very interesting terrain changes on the roads. That stretch could be used as a tank obstacle course. We picked up the glass for the display case and it will be custom built by a friend of my son. They felt it best to have the ship first and then build. I suggested that they add a drawer to hold the Constitution book and build CD.
I am really enjoying the swimming pool in the east coast heat and humidity.

Ken, glad to hear that you and the model made it safely across the Bronx's Ho Chi Min trail. It hasn't changed in 20 years.  I think some of those potholes could swallow a tank.

Enjoy the Atlantic and Long Island Sound and your family stay - it's pretty hot and humid up here in "Upstate"  Catskills also.
