rafine got a reaction from ccoyle in Prince de Neufchatel by rafine - FINISHED - Model Shipways - 1:64
With this update, I can report that PdN is now finished. I completed the masting and rigging by making,  mounting and rigging the fore topsail and fore lower yards.  I added all of the remaining braces and, lastly, added the anchors.

If I seem to be abbreviating my description of this work, it is because I am just glad to be done with this model for a couple of reasons. The first, and less important reason is that this is a poor kit with bad plans and instructions. The more significant reason is that this was a very difficult year for me health wise and this impacted both my ability to perform the work and my enjoyment of it. I cut too many corners and failed to do too many things that I should have, leaving me unsatisfied with the result. It is my least favorite build of the last number of years.

The attached photos are of the most recent work. I will post some final photos of the completed model shortly.

Moving to the outer hull, I decided to do the lower deadeyes and chainplates next. The deadeyes are the kit parts, but a decision had to be made about the main chainplates. The kit parts are PE brass, but they looked odd to me when compared to the those shown in AOTS. The PE part is one piece and has a loop below the deadeye that is supposed to represent the shackle to which the lower part of the chainplate is attached. To me, it seemed much too large and lacks any hint of an attachment to a separate lower part.

I chose to make the chainplates in two parts, using wire for the part around the deadeye and the shackle, and brass strip for the lower portion. The brass strip was bent over the wire to create a simulation of the shackle attachment. The first photo below shows a comparison of the kit part to what I produced.

The deadeyes for the main topgallant backstay and the mizzen deadeyes don't have the visible shackle attachment and I used the PE parts for them, as they seemed to match the appearance shown in AOTS.

The angles for the chainplates were set by using a piece of line attached to dummy masts.

I've completed the first planking of the lower hull on the port side. My intention was to do it "quick and dirty" , so as to achieve a smooth, flowing surface for the second planking, without worrying too much about a prototypical planking pattern.  My reaction after doing this work is to wonder why anyone would want to bother with double planking a hull. It seems like an awful lot of extra work. I'm still going to have to do all of the lay-out work for the final planking that I would have done if it were single planked.

In any event, it's now on to the starboard side.

I have now completed the work in chapter 11. The final items were the gangways, gangboards and their supporting knees, the newel posts and fancy rails, and the gangway ladders. Although the work was relatively straightforward, it was done in tight crowded spaces and required an extra measure of care. Apparently, I didn’t do that because I damaged a number of previously installed items, including snapping off off three more swivel guns. This meant that my final work was damage repair and replacement and touch up painting.

The attached photos show the work done with a few overall shots of the model as it sits now.

Looking very good B.E. It does seem that you will have an interesting time fitting those last two strakes. I have no doubt that you will do it perfectly.

Dave, you're off to a great start. Over the course of my 50+ years of model building, I've actually done Rattlesnake  twice. Unfortunately, I don't have either model, no photos and very little memory of the building process to be able to offer much specific help. I do recall that I enjoyed building them, and hope that you will, as well.

Thanks so much Jim, Glenn, Ben, Grant, Bob, Thomas and JJ for the generous comments. Thanks also to the "likes".

Jim, I' glad that someone will benefit from my exercise in clumsiness .Definitely a good idea to leave the swivels off til the end.

Glenn, the final display will be a wooden base with a frameless acrylic top. The model will be mounted just as it is now on brass rods inserted into brass tubes .I have grown partial to that method over the years.

Thomas, the fleet at home never grows. I am on a strict " one in ,one out" policy. Every time I finish a model to be kept at home, one  of the existing home fleet has to go. Through the years, I have given many to family and friends and donated some to charitable auctions.

An update on me, not on my Winnie..I just got out of the hospital in Florida and have flown to New York to enter the hospital here to undergo open heart valve surgery. it’s likely that I won’t be back in Florida for at least a month. Winnie will remain on hold for  at least that amount  of time.

This will be the last post for about two weeks. We leave tomorrow for a vacation in the San Diego area.

I've added the eye bolts, spanshackles and chimney cover boards.

With chapter 9 completed now I've started chapter 10. As I'm leaving very soon I figured I do the hatches instead of starting on the planking.

I'll see you all in a couple of weeks. Behave while I'm away! 😂

A small update. I have continued to move forward with beams, lodging knees and hanging knees. I also added the second column, glued in the capstan and added the pawls. With the addition of a hanging  knee,  I was able to mount and rig the remaining  two guns under the quarterdeck.

Now it's time to tackle the chain pumps.

I just completed the last steps before moving on to the lower hull planking. First, I added the anchor lining using the laser cut parts and strip. Next, I did the fairing cap, using the laser cut hance pieces, strip wood for the quarter deck pieces and for the temporary waist pieces, and pieces cut from cedar sheet for the bow pieces. After all those pieces were in place, I completed the fairing of the inner bulwarks. This was tedious, but not as bad as it might have been , since I had done a good deal of the fairing before.

Now, it's time to dig in and line off the lower hull and do the planking, a formidable looking task.
