One thing Ive seen over and over, within this forum and in others, is that many common questions arise that typically already answered at length in other places.  Any trip to another forum and you will see that asking a question like this normally is immediately followed by some snark comment about you not doing any due dilligence or research.   One thing Ive always appreciated about this forum is that despite some builders clearly not bothering to read other logs, they STILL get lenthy anwers and help from some of the same people whom I know have answered that same question a half-dozen times or more...  so really, I see nothing wrong with how anybody does anything around here.   This forum is already far better than many others...   no complaints at all.

For me, I often totally forget the like button, and actually regret not utilizing it more just to let others know that the work they put into their logs is appreciated, is being read and is still worth doing.   As a relative newb, I rarely have anything useful to add, so try to remember that many of the likes your getting might be from folks not nessesarily ingoring your question, but maybe just are not able to answer it (or if like me, like your question because they themselves have the same one...).

Plus, who am I to critisize your work?  An interesting phenomenom I noticed having read (I think) almost every Longboat build log is that the same people will comment "beautiful job" and "clean work" even though clearly one builder is light years better or cleaner.   To me this is not a dishonestly but rather quite helpful, not only to the builder but also to the continued interest and growth of the hobby.   Truly good criticism comes across in a way that is hard to distinguish, and I personally appreciate the subtlety and the respect people of all skill levels within this particular community show to each other.

Honestly...  this is without a doubt one of the best forums I have ever been lucky enough to discover.   No ego's, clean language, genuine interest in the work and best of all: lots of help....

    good morning every one

build log day 70-2 (arrived 10 weeks ago and had two days off)
well with the minimum of work being required  i went to plan B and and primed the hull, with a hairy stick and Vallejo grey primer
using the 2nd planking i was able to line the top wale plank in place, with the 3 following underneath it, this has also been sanded and primed, progress continues on the stbd side

You know what Kevin I really admire you here - A small error which has changed the course of your build in your own mind and you have risen to the challenge.

Now that the paint is on you can really see the lovely shape of the hull that you have made - this is going to be one lovely build 👍

    Welcome to MSW, @LEFEBVRE

While the forum guidelines specify English, there is a translate tool built into the Google Chrome browser if someone should post in a different language.

To use it you right click on the page you want translated.  There is a translate to English option.  This tool might help you translate English to French as you read the forum threads as you can select which languages to work translate.

It works quite well even on pages with multiple languages.  I have used it on a page with French, Czech, and German on the same page  The browser translated all of them.  (Even my southern accent translates.  )  Even a Japanese site I visit fairly regularly, the browser translates the page to English though the grammatic structure is strange. However, you can still get the gist of the information.

Just a tidbit for those who also peruse websites hosted in different countries.

markjay reacted to Joe V in Modeler's Sawmill discovers small Cache of Model Building Gold - Beautiful Holly Wood now available. While supplies last
Holly is not difficult to come by.  But really good Holly is impossible to find.  You know the stuff.

Its the stuff you remember being able to buy oh so many years ago.  Even the bad stuff around now is super expensive.

We have located and secured a decent sized batch of Holly billets of various size from an old supply.  Like finding a barn find of an old Mustang Bullet.

They are super white and beautifully clear.   Only a few tiny knots spaced far apart on a few billets.  No blue or green streaks.  We have these available for strips and such immediately.  Please email me or PM me for a quote on what you need.  You wont be disappointed.  While supplies last.

    Hi B.E.
I'd be honoured if you used my copper aging method! I won't offer to come around and help though - it is a technique best done in private...😏

markjay reacted to GrandpaPhil in 1:200 Russian Pre-Dreadnought Battleship Orel - Orel - Card Kit
This is the Orel kit of the Battleship Orel of 1904.

Orel is alternately spelled Oryol and literally translates to Eagle.

Having built an Orel kit before, I can attest that their kits are excellent.

    I bought mine off Amazon.

This kit has optional laser cut and photo-etch sets available.

Like the Solferino, the instructions come in Russian (I think), Polish, German and English.

There are construction diagrams at the beginning of the book this time.

Construction is a modified Plank On Bulkhead.

The quality of the parts sheets are excellent and printed on A3 paper or card.

Most parts are printed on paper for laminating onto card.

Some are printed on card and ready to use.

If you are interested in card models, Orel, a Ukrainian company, makes excellent ship models, in addition to a full range of other card models.

They have a pretty decent selection of ironclads and pre-Dreadnoughts from around the world in 1/200 scale.

Most have optional laser cut and photo-etch sets available.

I liked the first model that I got from them well enough that I ordered three more.

When I get the other two I’ll review them too.

The price for this particular model was $46.99 with free shipping.

Thank you for all your kind remarks. I’ve been taking photos with my phone as I’ve been building, but because of deteriorating eyesight I have only visited this forum on my computer or ipad, so will have to figure out how to post from my phone, which may take a while since neither cell phone use nor social media are among my few strengths. But I’ll do my best. I have been following the work of many of you for months now, and already owe you all a considerable debt, so I’m very much looking forward to sharing with you! Thanks again for the welcome!

    Hello everyone!

I am a new member from land-locked Utah (presently, at least), but have lived on both coasts. As I mentioned in my profile post, I am a university professor and professional artist, and have extensive experience in construction, carpentry, and woodworking. I have been building models since I was very young, almost always modifying them and often scratch-building them.
Life in miniature is a constant source of fascination for me. Probably my most ambitious project was a scale model of the Verazzano-Narrows bridge I scratchbuilt as a 15-year-old out of wood, metal, and heavy thread—from plans I drew myself with the help of library books and long-distance snail-mail correspondence with some very kind and patient engineers.

I started a wooden ship model (a Bluenose) years ago, but soon realized that I lacked the knowledge to build it well, and doing anything halfway is not in my nature. “If something is worth doing, it is worth doing to excess” is the dictum that rules my life, much to my family’s frustration at times. So, I returned to building scale airplanes until I could acquire the necessary skills for ship modeling. In the meantime, I learned to sail and have spent years reading books (and lately forums) on ships and model shipbuilding (and am thus familiar with some of your names from your plans, designs, and publications—and am grateful for the learning you have generously shared!). As I am now nearing retirement, I’ve been actively perusing this forum and model-building again for about 6 months (starting with the excellent Model Shipways shipwright kits,) and feel I am ready to start posting (assuming that I can learn to navigate the bewildering technicalities of an online forum).

I look forward to “meeting” you all, drawing on your experience, and hopefully contributing one or two things that might prove helpful to others. Thank you in advance for your friendship!

first of all this was to be my masterpiece build, having looked forward to it for so long, it was an accident, but could have been avoided, if I had been 100%
anyway having thrown all my toys , and the bois out of my pram i have now picked them back up and continuing from where i  left off, HOWEVER - my lovely Box wood will now be painted

Terrible news but on the bright side.. it's wood and can be fixed.   B.E. I think is on the right course.  The other is simply "wall side/view side" or paint.

If it’s individual planks that have been sanded through, could the section not be removed, and replaced?

I have done this using a scalpel blade and fine chisels. Any residual ca can be removed using acetone.

    Just a thought.

    good evening everyone

all my plans to display her naked have gone out of the window

i over sanded the bow on the Port side to much and went through to the 1st planking, after i stopped sobbing as it is Boxwood and not pear, my options are quite skimpily -  limited
1 never show the port side again - silly idea
2 paint and copper port side and leave the Starboard side in wood - i dont think i could pull that off
3 complete the hull as shown in the instructions- preferred way

i am absolutely gutted, but it was a nice sunny day, ive felt like pants for the last couple of weeks and was just nice to sit in the garden with some sandpaper
    oh hum

    damage done

    trying to hide the damage
