A short little update, I have started the ship's boat:
Here is the balsa blank and a picture in the manual showing how it should look when done. Let's hope!
Laminating the top rails
Ripping some .5 x 5 mm planking to 2.5 mm wide. The off cuts will be used for the interior ribs. The carving of the boat in this picture is almost completed, shaping was done using a rasp and sanding.

I have shown this before on another log but I thought I would show it again for those who might have missed it. To make oars I cut the dowels to length, these are 3 mm diameter, give them a good soaking in water then put them in a vice to flatten them. From right to left this picture is showing the dowel, the blade after coming out of vice then the final product after a little sanding.
The paint is still wet in this picture but these are the finished oars for the ship's boat

Hello Michael, welcome to the build there is always lots of room and never the need to apologise for filling up the inbox with likes. I very much enjoy that.
Drinking in the shipyard is allowed, however, until I find a way of controlling myself it is confined to spectators only. So you are good to go, fridge is in the back beside the recycle bin. Smoking is allowed in the two back rows and we ask that you turn off your cell phones while any power tools or sharp instruments are being used. All beverages are complimentary and self serve. Enjoy the voyage

I agree Jean-Pierre, same thing has happened to me.I now have my shipyard set up so that when the liquor cabinet door opens the shipyard door automatically closes and locks.

Popeye, in my post 506, the plan is showing the starboard side with blocks, this is why I thought both sides had them and didn't bother to look any further. Blocks are above the water line

If you apply the finish to the hull and the ends of the planks first you shouldn't have too many problems with bleeding. My thoughts are that unless you can show the actual pieces making up an individual frame, as in Danny's, I would go with paint.

Here are some of the plans, first one is an overall, second one showing how to build masts and spars and the last two are all about the rigging these are just for the foremast. The plans are all scale size so any measurement can be accurately taken off of them , I believe they are 35" x 50" and there is 14 of them. The main mast has three dedicated sheets and the mizzen has one. One sheet is all about the sails and the rest are the construction of hull and various items required. The instruction book is 36 pages which may seem small but with all the information you need on the plans the instruction book is more than adequate. It does an excellent job of outlining the various steps and is easy to follow.

Thanks to all for stopping in, for your comments and for all the likes. Got a little more done in the last two days mainly the ship's stove is now installed complete with a stockpile of firewood and an axe. The pump was also made and installed, this is a little kit included with the package, I think it looks pretty good. It came with 3 mm copper strapping for the bands, however, I replaced that with some card stock

Wow! That is a beautiful model Dan, I wish I was in that league. Doug adding veneer is a good idea, but the ends of the planks would not match properly would they. I didn't mind the looks of the black paint.

Using .5 x 6 mm strips line the inside of the opening keeping the front edge of the strips flush with the front edge of the bulkhead. Now install the 1'5 x 3 mm strips recessed 1.5 mm, to allow for the thickness of the door, as seen in P2, thus forming the door stop. The backside of the bulkhead can be trimmed or framed in with 1.5 mm stock, your choice. Next step is to apply the exterior planking, .5 x 6 mm. to the front of the bulkhead, this is installed so that it is flush with the edges of the door opening.
The plans, which are accurate, are showing the progression of the build so what might seem like the end of a strip is actually a cross section. Where the red arrows are pointing there is no veneer, or filler exposed it is showing the exterior planking and it's thickness, giving you a 3d view of the layers involved in this particular part of the build.
