Salty Sea Dog reacted to Sven in HMS Victory by Sven - FINISHED - 1:600 scale
New recruit requesting permission to come aboard!
Having made a few ships in bottles I wanted to see how small I could make a static ship model.
I have been overawed by the quality and craftsmanship of models I have seen in these pages and know that I could never come close to these.
I used to build small ships when I was a kid so I thought I would have another go. this is one from 45 years ago that my mother still had!
I really loved the models I used to look at in the NMM and Science Museum in London and decided to make my Victory out of boxwood for the beautiful colour and fine grain. I acquired some boxwood veneer and made a start.
I made the bulkheads and keel from 0.7mm ply the boxwood was used for deck and planking
I was keen to keep the model in a timber finish and started to construct the stern and galleries onto the base hull form
The gunports are closed! and therefore set out as simple squares on the hull. I also started to think about the few visible cannons with brass tube barrels.
Lower masts are bamboo skewers reduced through a draw plate and bands fitted in cotton thread
For the smaller solid parts I used sawn sections from one of my wife's used clay modelling tools which are made of fine boxwood

Salty Sea Dog reacted to john46 in Mare Nostrum 4331 by john46 - FINISHED - Artesania Latina - scale 1:35
This is the rebuilt of my built log of the Mare Nostrum, which I completed.
The pictures of the start of the built are missing, so I inserted the pics of the instruction sheet to show the start.
Trust the pictures are self explanatory, since I will only publish the pictures, not the comments.
Regards
John

Salty Sea Dog reacted to DSiemens in LE BONHOMME RICHARD by Jeronimo - FINISHED
I always judge a good model as one where I feel like I could climb aboard and sail away on. This one is a thousand times more then that. Incredible work to the last detail.

Salty Sea Dog got a reaction from Mahuna in Muscongus Bay Lobster Smack by Dee_Dee - FINISHED - Midwest Products – 1:24 – Kit Bashed - Small
Hi Dee Dee!
I'm sure glad you are paving the way with all the details you're working out. Really nice work!
Thanks for the nice words about my whaleboat. Hope you enjoy your trip to Colorado Springs.
P.S. After reading your comment I realized I had made a typo, the Martin was a 1927 OO-18 instead of a D-18. A really sweet tone. It was tough to return that one to its owner after the repair!

The deck is looking great! Nice job!
Maybe you can whittle some oars for the life boat when your camping at Custer State Park (beautiful place!). If you are going to double the rum rations while on vacation, maybe you should stay away from knives though...

Salty Sea Dog reacted to NAZGÛL in Wasan 1628 by Nazgul - FINISHED - Billing Boats Vasa 1:75
Michael, thanks for the tip. I hadnt decided on using nails, but man you got so much of her look through them!
Ok, here are the most interesting pictures I managed to take. I tried to get pics that I missed looing for reference. Its really hard to get good pictures at the museum. Almost no light and the ship being so dark makes it difficult. I have worked with the pics contrast and brightness alot in photoshop, so dont take the colors as gospel.
First are hull and planking pics. The weather deck and some other details.

Salty Sea Dog reacted to petervisser in Wasa by Andre - FINISHED - Corel - 1:75
This model is very lucky to have found you. Andre, you are doing a wonderful job restoring this once sorry Wasa. The original builder would never recognize this model again.
Thanks for posting your log.

Salty Sea Dog reacted to BANYAN in LE BONHOMME RICHARD by Jeronimo - FINISHED
No matter what your profession Karl, that is some seriously good and expertly finshed detailing. The furniture itself would make some very good models in their own right.
IMPRESSIVE!
cheers

Salty Sea Dog reacted to slagoon in LE BONHOMME RICHARD by Jeronimo - FINISHED
Aw Bedford... I don't think I will be either.... Jeronimo is an amazing craftsman. I can only aspire to be that skilled. Part of the fun of this, though, is constantly TRYING to be that good.

Salty Sea Dog reacted to augie in Emma C Berry by trippwj - Model Shipways - Scale 1:32
I empathize with you. It's a tough condition. Back in my professional life we introduced some of the first drugs to help treat the condition over 20 years ago. But they merely helped relieve the symptoms rather than curing the disease itself. Someday that will come to pass.

Good on you for doing the scratch building Robbyn, in my view that's what makes you a good modeller rather than just someone how puts a kit together.
Re your bike trip I have one question.............................how are you going to safely carry the SF on a bike so you can work on it while you are there

Work on the spars has started.
Also I have attempted to create new stern gallery wiindows from scratch as I didn't much like the ones that came with the kit.

While watching Sarah steep the tea for the sails last night I joked with myself that she is building a "scratch and sniff" model .

I've been so busy playing with my ship that I've not updated my log for awhile. Lets start with the IOU's
Wayne, here is a photo of the dead eyes going into the sponsons....
Keith - here is the penny with a completed ratline for persepective
When making the ratlines I used this cardstock comb that I made to keep the lines separated.
Ok, so I finished the 4 sets of ratlines.
Now that I've finished the ratlines (phew) I'm on to my next challenge, furled sails. Thanks to everyone who sent me photos of furled sails -that helped a bunch. The local club gave me some silkspan to use (which is lucky since the sail cloth I'd bought from ME was way too heavy for furled sails.) and I cut and died it with earl grey.
I found that wetting the silkspan gave it a more realistic weight so I furled them while they were still wet and they held that shape when they dried. I'm going for the look that they've just been temporarily tied up, not the fully stowed perfect bundle that they do when they are fully storing the sails.
I am working on running rigging tonight
