JeffT reacted to N80FTY in HMS Victory by N80FTY - DeAgostini - 1:84 - first build
Before i go any further and mess things up, Can anyone tell me if the angle i have is ok. If not i can take the glue of now and reposition.
I have it at 15 degrees of vertical at the moment. but i have seen some further back and some nearly vertical.

So, sweet Keeva is off the hook now.
To effect the repair, I first needed to get the main hull plate and profile former assembled. Here's the plate with its beveling completed.
After gluing those two pieces together and letting them cure, it was time to 'fix' the broken bulkhead. It turns out the damage was not as catastrophic as it looked at first glance. The main part of the bulkhead was broken in half; after beveling the two halves, I glued each in separately. The bulkhead had a long stem that fills most of the remaining slot. The original stem was munched beyond repair, but it was a simple matter to make a replacement from scrap plywood.
All done! Now there remains a lot of beveling and gluing of the remaining bulkheads. I probably won't post another pic until that task is done.

Drew, welcome to MSW. Glad to have you aboard.
https://cloudcraftsite.wordpress.com/2015/09/17/splitting-hairs-a-small-rant-about-terminology/
The above is not exactly what MSW folks mean by 'bashing'. Here it's refinement of a kit model for greater historically accuracy, altered hull, mast, rigging details, etc etc and less about adding parts though that is done at times.
If you search bash or bashing in the search box on the main page you'll find many examples. Happy New Year.

Hi Drew, welcome to Model Ship World! This is a great community and very active forum. I'd like to also offer if you're interested in some in person comradery with ship modeling, the Philadelphia Ship Model Society meets at 1pm on the third Sunday of the month at the Coast Guard Station. Happy to fill you in on any details if you're interested, just send me a message. Good luck on your Lightening build!

Hey there, mateys. I had done a pair of very basic kits before, a simple sailboat and a pirate ship, neither of much complexity. Around when the pandemic shut things down I finally resolved to start the Lightning Sailboat (1:12) kit from Dumas. That had been completed a few weeks ago (photos for the gallery in process); whereupon I learned my first mate, CFO and bestie had ordered the Ulises OcCre, 1:30, for my recent birthday, it came a month after. In the meantime, I found this resource (NRG/MSW) and hope to keep up a proper log as I begin the new project.
There are some nuances to terminology perhaps some kind folk can enlighten me with: what is bashing? And is there a beginner / intermediate novice area? Oh and I had created my sign-in before thinking about it being kind of long and a bit obtrusive, so, allow some slack on that, ok?
Before having family, and most of my career, I had completed many auto, aircraft, armor and other plastic kits, all for good. Working in wood is a special endeavor, as I found the Lightning kit at a local hobby shop’s going out of business sale - last century. I guess the CFO likes my modeling because it keeps me busy and chill. Yes, yes the wood had dried out a lot, and many parts were missing or had decayed. So much more creativity required!
Peace

My dog has earned her way onto Santa's naughty list -- forever.*
*I may feel differently about this tomorrow, but not right now. 😑😑😑 I'd be less angry if her depredation didn't mean having to cut out a replacement from the thickest plywood in the kit -- 4 mm. 😑😑😑
Hmm . . . looking at the picture just now, I realize there might just be an easier way to fix this. Stay tuned.

JeffT reacted to bruce d in Hand powered sander - not Ultimation
OK, here goes. There has been discussion lately about the Ultimation tools, especially the hand-disc sander. There are other products of similar concept in use by jewellers and picture framers.
I am making a hand powered disc sander along those lines but not a copy. The prototype is encouraging.
Looking at the jigs and fixtures I will be using it would be easy enough to make multiple assemblies. Without commitment, is anyone out there interested in one after the trouble-shooting is done? Bear in mind I am UK based.

Window sills
I will admit that these were quite tricky to make. Different angles everywhere and some trial and error was needed in order to get them just right. I probably had 3 or 4 throwaways before getting the ones you see here.
Stern frames
In order to make these, I sandwiched two roughly cut frames together with some Elmer's School Glue and then adhered the plan drawing for final shaping. This was easy enough to do with the help of the spindle sander, disk sander and scroll saw.
Transom
On top of the shear there will be a 5/32" fairing cap and a 1/4" cap rail that sits on top of that. The two pieces will add a total of about 3/32" more height to the top of the shear. I wouldn't want the cap rail to protrude above the top edge of the transom. With that in mind, I decided to fair the quarter deck shear before adding the transom. This way I could check the clearance before adding the transom. It was really just a matter of getting that small triangular piece taken down to the right height while fairing the shear.
I added the 5/32" fairing cap for the quarter deck and faired the outer hull using the cap as a guide.

Welcome Ian C.
You'll get lots of support on this forum, especially if you create a "Build Log" for your ship model- it's easy to set up and you'll need to take decent photos of course. Good Luck!
P.S. I lived in Somerset for two years, close to Taunton. Loved visiting Bristol's waterfront and hopping over the bridge to Cardiff.

Hello, and a warm welcome to the forum from 'Down Under'.
When you're ready to start building, remember to start a build log - then we can all enjoy your model, and you can get all the help might you need.

Hi all, I am a lifetime railway modeller and have built many railway kits and lots of scratchbuilt.
Years ago I built a Clyde puffer and I have built full-size sailing dinghies. Now I hanker to build another model boat. My choice is the steamtug Wattle 1:24. Scratchbuilt, it scales out at 1100mm long.
Although the plans say it is for the experienced builder, having done so much railway modelling and general woodwork, I am confident I can do this.
So far, all I have done is to order the plans and clear a spot on the workshop!
all comments gratefully received.
