JeffT reacted to Old Collingwood in USS Curtis Wilbur (DDG-54) by patrickmil - FINISHED - I Love Kit - 1/200 - PLASTIC
Looking forward to following this very fine kit, I will bring my chair and nibbles, these ships remind me of the British Navys past advanced Destroyer HMS Bristol, she was our days visit ship when I spent a week with the Navy for work experience as a teenager.

Hi OC! Jealous again, HAHAHAHA! I really like the lines of the Arleigh Burke DDGs. They look sleek but imposing at the same time. I hope I can do this kit justice.
Thanks for following,
Patrick

Hey Patrick,
I'll be following along on this one! I served on the USS Barry (DDG-52) and had a friend on the Curtis Wilbur back in 99-03. We both worked on the AN/SPY-1D radar- those things that look like giant stop signs under the bridge lol. It looks like a fantastic kit!

Hi Jeff! I'm jealous that you got the opportunity to check one of these out. The McFaul, if I'm reading Wikipedia correctly, is a Flight II ship in that class; she still didn't get hangers and the length is the same. Converting this kit to the McFaul wouldn't be too hard.
Overall, my rating of the kit is very high. The moldings are all very crisp and the detail provided is plenty enough to not lament not having a Pontos set. I would give it a 9/10 and only because the instructions, like all Trumpeter instructions, suck. No color call-outs, some of the placement isn't very well shown, and there is absolutely NOTHING written about the subject.
Thanks for checking in,
Patrick

I like this model kit. Probably will end up in my stash at some point. I got to tour an Arleigh Burke-class some years ago in Newport, Rhode Island while attending the Navy's Senior Enlisted Academy. It was the USS McFaul (DDG-74).

Same. I prefer the tape over the plates.

This should be the last of the kit pics. Next posts will hopefully involve progress on building toward completion. BTW, I have started a new channel on YouTube where my awkward *** will be building this gorgeous kit and will keep pace of updates here. More details on that to come.
Thanks for looking in!

More sprue shots! Ugh!!! I promise I'll figure out the OOTB photo editing software on this damn PC. Again, sorry for the semi-distorted pics. The pics don't show all 33 of the sprues because there are many duplicates.
More still to post...

Ok, obligatory sprue shot time!!! Just a couple of stats on what came in the box. The kit contains 33 plastic sprues, 10 separate parts that had no sprue attached, 6 frets of photoetch, copper chain, and decals. I'm very impressed with the quality so far but have yet to actually put anything together. I guess we'll see since I Love Kit (aka Trumpeter) can be hit or miss with their kits. I do not plan on using the included display stand but will put the completed kit onto two brass pedestals and a wood base. That's a long way off though. Hopefully my clumsy attempt will somewhat resemble the real deal.
Nice, one piece hull (mostly one piece)
Some details shots on the hull
The main deck piece and detail shots following
Apologies on the limitations of my iPhone; a couple of the pics are distorted.

JeffT reacted to Ponytail in Hello from the Netherlands.
Hello all,
Let me introduce myself:
I am a Dutch guy who just got himself into wooden shipmodel building after a lifetime of papermodels and plastic kits, and lately electric HO-trains and lasercut architecture (as desigenr-builder-volunteer at MiniWorld Rotterdam).
Started with the known chinese Halcon or Harvey kits.
Now I want to make a step and got me a secondhand kit by CANAV-Robert Greco of a Dutch galjoot (galliot).
Gonna read a lot here, and learn. And sometimes ask 'stupid' questions... 😉

Adding several tantalizing pics. I still have to unpack everything and should be able to provide more of a comprehensive kit review in the next couple of days.
Overall dimensions: Length 769 mm/30.3", Beam 111 mm/4.4", 1300+ pieces
It's been a minute since I've posted anything here, let alone pictures, so please let me know if I'm doing anything incorrectly. 😄
Thanks,
Patrick

Hi All!
Been awhile since I've shared any modeling on this forum. Figured I'd change that with the new tool kit from I Love Kit (Trumpeter). It's the USS Curtis Wilbur in 1/200 scale. It's an Arleigh Burke class guided missile destroyer. The kit is based apparently on the destroyer during the mid to late nineties. There is no aftermarket available (that I could find) for the kit yet, so I most likely will be modeling her as I Love Kit (Trumpeter) intended. This is a placeholder until I can get some shots of the kit sprues once I unbox it. At first glance though, this looks like a very solid attempt by I Love Kit (Trumpeter).
I hope you like what you see in upcoming posts in this topic!

I agree, but I don't see much there to get excited about -- a small selection. most of which are available from other manufacturers already.
Meanwhile, untold thousands of ship and boat subjects still have no representation at all in the wooden kit world.

Have you ever heard about the company? It looks like a new company in Spain.

This is the most expensive kit from the company.
New companies and kits are always welcome.
By the way, Carthago Nova is a historic city in Spain.

The next step is to install the forward inner gundeck bulwark patterns:
In order to do that the inboard surfaces of the frames need to be faired:
Here is the port side forward inner gundeck bulwark pattern glued in place. Much clamping was needed to make if conform to the curve at the bow:
I thought that it might be easier to apply the masking tape in preparation for subsequent varnishing and painting while the pattern was still off the model.
The quarter deck beam spacing patterns are the next to be glued in. Here is the starboard pattern:
I forgot to photograph these until after I had glued in the port pattern. The larger notches slot into the bulkhead ears. The smaller notches are for the quarter deck beams. The letters engraved on this pattern will correspond with letters engraved into the ends of the beams.
They snapped nicely into position, and needed only one clamp to hold them in place. Here they are installed:
Once these are in place, the aft inner gundeck bulwark pattern can be fitted:
Here is the port aft inner gundeck bulwark pattern installed:
Here is the current state of play:
Tis the season to be doing things other than modeling. I expect to resume after Xmas, or possibly New Years. 'Bye for now.

JeffT reacted to Wacom in HMS Winchelsea 1764 by Wacom - FINISHED - 1:48
I couldn't believe it when a friend told me how long it has been since my last post.
My only excuse is that life caught up with me and subsequently Winnie took a back seat.
She was finished some time ago so I will post a couple of photos that show some of the details.
Since taking these shots someone made me an offer that I could not refuse so Winnie now has a good home leaving me with plenty of space in the workshop.
Who knows I am tempted to build another one and hopefully correct some of the mistakes I made first time round.
My thanks must go to Chuck for making this superb ship build available.
To all those who, with their helpful comments and suggestions made this possible...Thank you.

Foremast Lower Shrouds - Take 2
Following on my last post, where I had an issue aligning the shroud deadeyes, I did some experimentation this morning. Using the method I had previously outlined I did find it difficult to ensure the loop seizing was added to the same point. With previous builds, once the deadeye has been seized in the loop, the shroud deadeye height could always be adjusted by moving the loop seizing. This is not an ideal method but it did seem to work reasonable well. This method did not seem to work to well with the Indy, possibly due to using larger threads for the shrouds.
I thought there must be a better /easier method. After a little bit of thought I devised a modified jig, as shown in the picture below. By adding an additional pin (blue arrow) above the shroud deadeye the shroud line can be fed into the jig. A bit of tension is applied to the line by clipping on a pair of my reverse action tweezers.
I have a vague recollection that another member MSW passed a loop seizing through the shroud line. I thought this would be worth a try. Using a sewing needle I was able to feed the seizing thread through the shroud line, thus ensuring the seizing point was fixed in place.
It was then a simple task to complete the seizing. Once I had added the deadeyes to the first shroud pair I did an alignment test with some lanyards. I am much happier with the end result compared with yesterday effort. Tomorrow I will continue to add the deadeyes and, fingers crossed, the new method will yield a more consistent end product.
