Back again for the final part of this build log.

There were an assortment of parts to be made to complete the below deck display and, in no particular order, here they are:

    Storage racks,

    Tiiddly table hangers,

    Table,

    Water breaker,

Plates, knives, cheese, tankard and "square meal"

    Fire buckets,

    Hammock,

The "tidy" gun showing training levers, fire bucket, cartridge and tackles,

    Serving tools,

    Bench with squeeze box,

    Grease bucket and brush,

Tompions, flexible rammers and spongers and a deck broom,

    The Legend.

HMS. Innominate Is carrying out some self maintenance. One of the great guns has been serviced and tidied away with all the serving tools neatly stowed. The gun crew are about to enjoy a meal and, maybe, some music.

Meanwhile the second gun is still being worked on. One trunnion strap is open and grease is being applied. There seems to be a problem under the barrel as well as it has been hoisted up to the deckhead and secured whilst work goes on.

The training and hauling tackles have been used to position the gun. The training levers are seen acting as wheel chocks; I have no proof that this was done but logically it might have been.

Where are the crew? They are in my minds eye. They fade in and out of this representation of a moment in time and, if you concentrate, you will see and hear them as I do.

I have greatly enjoyed this model and by using the plans as a guide I think I have achieved an interesting object that, hopefully, my great friend and O'Brian aficionado  will enjoy whilst he reads of Jack and his adventures.

    Hey CaptainSteve,

My template pics: I printed these using the scale option until they were really close to scale. I turned walnut stock referring to the full pics for similar details.

I used this piece from my exploded bic lighter for the blades. I flattened them out, shaped em with my dremel, then put flames to it with a bic lighter. The flame darkened the shine out .

I know what you mean, the handles are only 1/16 thick, that why I used the walnut.

Well I got sidetracked this week. I finally got my son back after 6 years of separation. So we've been catching up while I dink away at my build.

I saw this photo and thought it to be a nice looking compass. I'm not set on the face yet, and might be trying a contact for the lens. Still workin on the oars, they take more attention than conversations will allow. Those assorted metal pieces worked perfect for this application.

    Back again.

The next task is to build the two great guns. Some of the kit parts are  of plywood and whilst the grain on the faces is ok, being quite fine,
the laminate edges look all wrong. At first I was going to cut new parts but then I realised that may not be a one off situation so i decided to experiment with facing the edges with thin slips. The images below show the outcome and although not perfect they will suffice. I think with more care I could have produced a better outcome and I believe this technique has some merit.

The gun barrels need to be black and I tried both Humbrol Steel  and Gunmetal Metalcoat and settled for the latter. On top of this I rubbed on grate blacking before polishing to a dull sheen. The barrels are not yet finished as I intend replacing them when the build is complete.

i have used the tilt table to cut the angles on the gun port hatches for my gun deck cross section. The kit solution was to make them up from three laminates and file the bevels. Sod that for a game of soldiers! Mine were made from solid and cut on the Byrnes saw. Thank you Jim.

I’m happy to see the topic discussed since one seldom sees baggywrinkle, or any chafe gear of any kind, depicted on a model. Probably this is due to its not being shown on rigging plans.
I have used brown paper glued over bits of line on the model to simulate leather chafe gear but the only baggywrinkle I put on any of my models was on ship in a bottle models of schooners. As a joke I made the baggyrinkle on THOSE models out of a tiny slice of  rope yarn. Thus it was made out of real baggywrinkle.
I hate to be the guy that suggests a technique I have not actually ever tried or seen done, but here goes: On a large scale model one could almost make real baggywrinkle? One could shave off 1/32” rope fibers from the yarn of a tight laid natural fiber line, and drag a thread dipped in glue through the pile of fibers. When dry the thread could be spiraled around a quarter lift or wherever.

Well. Christmas arrived early. My Byrnes table saw was delivered yesterday evening. However, did not get to unbox and set it up till late this afternoon.

I must admit that I was a little apprehensive about spending $500+ on a small table saw. Especially, when I can get a good 10" table saw for slightly more (and eventually will). However, after using the Byrnes saw for the very first time, I'm a believer. I used it to start cutting parts for a table saw cutting sled and it is nothing short of fantastic. I now find myself thinking back over all the projects I've done over the years that I wish I'd had the Byrnes saw (projects before I got back into ship modeling).

Also, my wood from the Constitution arrived yesterday. So, after the sled is completed, the next project the Byrnes saw will see is cutting and dimensioning wood from the Constitution to construct the keel for my build. I'm actually going to need the sled to dimension the wood from the Constitution. Otherwise, I'd already be working on the keel.
